X360: VGA Cable woes

I've my PAL X360 hooked up to my 1280x1024 LCD 4:3 computer monitor because I like to have HD output that my 32" CRT widescreen tv cannot provide.
There's a couple of things I am not at all happy about:
1) Quite a lot of older Xbox games refuse to function with a VGA cable stating that the 50hz display mode isn't supported. Setting your x360 to 50Hz or 60Hz on PAL output on my CRT tv didn't solve this problem. On a regular CRT PAL TV there's an issue with some old xbox games only working at 50Hz refresh rate, Half life is a prime example.
2) PG3 has a squashed up screen where the game screen is squashed horizontally and car wheels look like eggs standing up straight despite the fact that the x360 is setup correctly with 4:3 aspect ratio and the proper 1248x1024 native LCD resolution.

The latter I've been able to fix because I found out that the game doesn't support my LCD's 1280x1024 native resolution but the game does support 1024x768. When I set the x360 to this resolution the game screen is displayed properly, menus and in-game screens are displayed with black letterbox bars above and below. Ok my monitor does have to do hardware scaling but at least the game still is in a pretty high resolution with the car wheels not looking like eggs but like real wheels.

Hi Mark. GOW is

Hi Mark. GOW is outstanding. I've been playing online for about a month I guess and I'm still not any good...just love playing the game. The single player campaign is also very good and I'm about a third into it. I still get a kick out of chain sawing somebody in multiplayer!!!!! There are 3 of us from work that get online most nights from 2130EST to about 2300EST. Here are our gamer tags:

I managed to get a correct

I managed to get a correct aspect ratio on PGR3 on VGA cable with 4:3 (LCD) monitor. Yes it is possible by setting the resolution to 1024x768 on a 4:3 display! It seems that the programmers did put in a 4:3 mode but not at all resolutions, 1024x768 is working. My LCD monitor scales 1024x768 very well so that's not a big deal.

Gears of War is is very very widescreen and the aspect ratio is a little too flat on a 4:3 display set to either 1024x768 or 1280x1024. Great console but display woes continue. Still no fix for my old Xbox Pal games on VGA cable. :(

GOW, first impressions tell me it's indeed a great game, even a bit too intense for this old geezer ;).

Cheers,

In Germany a lot of the red blood in games needs to be changed..

A lot of Germans see digitized blood in the lovely colour green in quite a few games....

Perhaps the old xbox games clashing with VGA cable needing 50Hz is PAL only.

PAL Only?

Does that apply to PAL only games then?

Sure seems strange.

Not exactly related, but, I've heard that Microsoft had to submit patches for the German and Russian versions of COD2 due to sensitivity issues with some of the graphics and audio. The software developers for the game certainly didn't portray the Germans very well (they're all fat and don't move very well in the game...it is very, very obvious to anybody playing the game). There is alot of German and Russian writing on walls, signs, etc., that I've always wondering what it means. In COD3, some of the in-game audio would be considered to be politically incorrect as well. Sometimes I wonder how they still manage to get away with that kind of thing.

Cheers

Thanks Force

"Nicht nur bei 1280*1024. 1280*1024 wurde von Microdoof erst viel zu spät aufgenommen, deshalb haben die Hersteller diese Auflösung nicht mehr integriert. NFS MW, PGR3, CoD2 laufen alle verzerrt in dieser Auflösung."

I found this in the German part of the site and it says that Microsoft for some reason implemented the 1280x1024 resolution late and that caused developers not to implement that resolution in time before they released their games.
NFS MW
PG3
CoD2 are supposed to suffer from this problem according to the German forum user, but I can only say that PG3 looks distorted on a my PAL 4:3 VGA in 1280x1024 setup.
NFS MW looks good. CoD2 I don't own so I don't know. Actually none of the other games I own have a distorted display on my VGA at 1280x1024.

VGA Cable and PC Monitor

I've noted alot of folks are going the PC monitor route for HD as of late. I don't know the answer myself regarding the resolution issue you describe, but have you checked out the websites here. The xbox360forum site has a ton of info on this topic and some of the posters might be able to help you out. Do all your new games display properly on the monitor?
