Boy, what a debacle I had starting on Tue, 7 Nov. COD3 was supposed to be released that day, which I thought mean't I'd be able to pick up my reserve copy that I setup for back in Sep. My buddies and I went out to lunch early that day to stop by the local Best Buy. They didn't have it. Almost 8 hours, 25 stores and 100 minutes of cell phone calls later, I still didn't have the game. Turns out when they say they're going to release a game it means it is released into shipping channels. No amount of bribing the store game attendants to go into the back of the store and pull a copy of the game for me.

I finally got the game at noon yesterday but had to work late, until almost 8:30 PM. Came home and hooked up the 360 to the 50" Sony widescreen, set the game up for 1080i and almost died when I booted the game up and went into a map with some of my friends. I don't think I've ever seen/played a game like this before. It trounces COD2 and leaves it behind in the dust!!!

If any of you like FPS, and in particular, WWII shooters, you have to pick up this game!!!! I took off from work today because I was up until 2:30 this morning playing!!!

Oh, let me mention a few things that are new in the game:

You can drive tanks, jeeps and motorcycles (with sidecar). You can have 3 people in the jeeps and two in the tanks (second person can use the 50 cal.

Hand to hand combat featured.

There are sticky grenades for taking out tanks.

You can call in artillery.

You can now "cook" grenades to surprise your friends at close range.

Cover is no longer safe. You can hide behind a tomb stone, but if shot at the tomb stone gets chipped away.

Cheers/Force58

Gears Online

I finally got into a Gears 4 on 4 match online. What an experience! The "Live" play is outstanding and with the ability to revive fallen team mates it makes it even better. The teams of 4 tend to travel in packs and take on the enemy at once, with one staying a bit behind to revive us. The online maps aren't huge, so it lends itself to frantic play. Like I mentioned before, you have to have a thick stomach for this one, especially when you end up on the receiving end of a chain saw in 3rd person mode. I've gotten used to 3rd person as well and it actually helps out with the primary feature or ability in this game. That is, the ability to use cover to your advantage by pressing the "A" button in conjunction with the direction pad, depending on what you're doing. It's a nice feature that I hadn't tried until yesterday.

Love this game.

Gears, Prey and Far Cry

Yep, I went onto Live and noticed there was no demo for Gears. Not sure why they'd be waiting, especially since the game is out already.

I like the puzzles on Prey too. I'm stuck at the moment, 1 or 2 checkpoints after learning the out-of-body move. I seem to get lost alot in this game. You're right, there aren't many games out anymore with a story line. Prey is one that seems to have done it right.

One most excellent game for the old Xbox is Far Cry Instincts. If you like Prey, you'll like this one. It has Feral instincts that make the game very, very interesting. There's also a Far Cry version out for the 360, but I haven't tried it yet.

Don't worry about FPS's on the 360, as far as online goes. You can't be any worse than I am. I really don't try to win the games...just to have fun. If I get one really, really good kill, I'm happy.

PC and Keyboard can't be beat when you're playing FPS games. Even though the gamepad/controller's have come a long way, they still can't match the precision of a mouse.

Prey is a very nice game, no 'Gears' yet on live though...

Prey is a game that actually got me into FPS a bit more again. The nice graphics, cool concept and a lot of organic gore and slime to wade around in. The fact that it has a storyline. The little puzzles are nice and I like the fact that you cannot die really. I am actually getting used to the gamepad control scheme more and more. I still suck and won't survive human multiplayer modes on control pad as I am able to on mouse and keyboard on the PC games. I've been contemplating on getting Prey on PC aswell, but my system is getting really dated and I am using the mac more and more.
I've been tinkering with the Tom Clancy Las Vegas demo a bit and I've been buying some 2nd hand FPS games for my old Xbox too.

Gears Demo

I think there is a demo of Gears up on Live now.

I'm about a third through Prey. It's a great game but "Live" leaves alot to be desired. What are your thoughts on Prey single-player?

The concept is great and the gravity walks are kind of original. I tell you though, some of the "stuff" in there almost makes me want to puke, and I have a tough stomach, hahaha.

Cheers

Wait a minute... is there a GOW demo available....?

Wait a minute, is there a Gears of War demo available on Live? Haven't turned on the xbox on Live for quite a while. Checking NOW. COD3 may be on my December wish list too. But I still have to finish Prey first.

Gears Initial Thoughts

Well, I played through about 5 checkpoints on Gears single-player. It "is" good, however, it takes a bit to get used to the 3rd person view. You can't change it, at least as far and the manual and some of the online chatter I've read. Also, the way you aim, or bring up the aiming reticle, is by pulling the left tripper. This is also something to get used to. I finally did manage to get used to it and have no problem with either the view or aiming now.

The graphics are great and the AI seem to respond like you'd think they would. They just don't charge you, but instead, use cover and travel in numbers and different groups to confuse you.

Gameplay is good too, but you can't compare it to COD3 at all. It's more like "Unreal" if I had to compare it with something.

I tried for about a half hour to get onto a lobby online, to no avail. It kept coming up with a message saying the host is not reachable. I did note that each time a different host was available, but each time it would not connect. It might have been a glitch during that particular time I was trying to go online. I'll try it again tonight.

Both COD3 and Gears are great. Viva Pinata is next on my purchase list.

Cheers

Call of Duty 3 and Gears of War

It sounds great, Force, and has been well reviewed, but I'm thinking it might be a bit overshadowed by "Gears of War". That game has gotten some of the highest scores on the platform ever and everyone seems to be going ga-ga over everything from the graphics and sound to the single player mode. Any thoughts on Gears?
