DS Lite Opera Browser hands on video (Japanese version)

For anybody interested in the up and coming websurfing capabilities of the Nintendo DS-Lite take a look at the YouTube video below. The European version should be available somewhere in August/September I've read in numerous places. Caution the Opera software comes with a memory expansion unit that will only fit inside a DS-Lite machine!

Any word on the Browser Availability in the U.S.

I'd heard it would be released here sometime (in the U.S.). Just wish it were sooner rather than later. I've accessed the web via our PSP, but you're correct that its kind of cumbersome. I'd imagine the use of the touch pad will make the DS a bit easier. I've got both the original and the Lite and haven't touched the original except to play with the pictochat between the two units. Love the Lite's new and brighter screen!!!!!

comparing PSP browsing with the DS browsing

I have personally experienced PSP webbrowsing which is quite handy for checking out the AA website when in bed during a spell of insomnia. The biggest disadvantage of the PSP is the way you scroll around the screen and the lack of an overview of the entire page. This is what I feel the DS device is superior in: you can have a complete overview of a webpage and scroll around with more ease. Text entry on the DS will probably be easier with help of a virtual keyboard if you compare it to the SMS style entry method of the PSP. I plan on getting the European version of the Opera Browser for my DS-Lite (I now own two devices, a DS-Lite and a classic DS) in order to have nice and easy webbrowsing on the go.

Obviously, as free wireless

Obviously, as free wireless access points become more ubiqitous, Web browsers on devices like the PSP and DS become more practical, but there's little utility for such a thing as it stands now except under very specific circumstances. The PSP browser, for instance, is quite robust since it's been upgraded, but is a real pain to use with no good text entry option. The DS will have the advantage of the touch screen, but is still not ideal for any long text entry. The biggest plus with these browsers is their ability to access special content, like downloads, playable directly on the device. Anything that makes demoing games easier should be considered a plus for anyone.
