Eek, the July NPD hardware numbers show the industry inhale before the Xbox One and PS4 exhale:

Nintendo 3DS: 150,000 (+14%)
Xbox 360: 107,000 (-47%)
PlayStation 3: 79,000
Wii: 35,000
Nintendo DS: 31,000
Wii U: 29,000
PlayStation Vita: 16,000

It's important to note that while the 3DS is the only healthy system at this point, it's still trending over 1.5 million units behind the DS at the same point of that system's lifetime. Again, it should continue to do well for a few more years, but nowhere near the numbers of its off-the-charts predecessor.

Main problem with numbers are PC gaming, where only free source is VGChartz, where you could see ridiclousy small sales of some games in one or two thounsand digits, but true is that sales of those game very much bigger in order one or two magnitudes.
And even with in consoles promised land, US, you have to admit, that PC a Steam market matters and Steam numbers are secret. AFAIK US market is "only" half of worldwide videogame market revenue, but we dont have consolided numbers of rest of the world, where majority is europe. For example, you probably dont know, because you dont live here, that in germany is still very viable adventures games market..

Well, there's really nothing we can do about sales figures for things like Steam, and for the Kindle on Amazon, because, as you say, those numbers are generally kept private. With that said, it doesn't mean we shouldn't work with what we do have/get, including the NPD numbers.

Yes, I'm aware of what's going on in Europe and Japan as a matter of my general interest in all this stuff. In fact, there's a vibrant retro community over there and I purchase many new creations for classic systems. I also have quite a few classic European and Japanese systems. I personally love all that, regardless of origin. Still, I tend to stick to my primary living location, the US, since I think that best serves my perspective as an insider rather than an outsider.

NPD numbers because are maybe good for US market, but are misleading, because ignore Europe and rest of world. Same as VideogameCharz, which are also pure fiction.. I saw you analysis which tried to be whole world and numbers are very different, better for non stupid games.
3DS here is middle europe are lots of users of Nintendos handeld, but piracy is here is 90%, and almost same for PSP 80%.

Right, those are US numbers, and those are factual. They're not too far off from the ratio of the rest of the world, though generally the PS3 does better elsewhere, and of course, the 360 is a non-factor in Japan, and the Vita does reasonably well in Japan.

The only time the NPD numbers should be looked at more critically are when they list software sales, which only accounts for retail figures, i.e., not downloads, which are now a huge factor. Supposedly that will be addressed shortly.
