after the game last night i saw my Preload was done. and i clicked the Play button.. waited for the "this game is schedualed to be unlocked in XXX hours" but it installed and started (steam mess up? no idea). I only played about an hour, so its way to early to judge, but that hour last night has me thinking of all sorts of ways to get out of work today and go home.

The game starts with a mission, which basicly is a tutorial, its pretty much paint by numbers.. you just listen and do what it says (no improvising on your part) it walks you through the basics. I was a little suprised at how it ended, but I will leave that for you guys. Once that mission ends it basicly walks you through research, improving soliders (you pick skills this time, but attribute points are done automatic like the old game) it seems not every soldier can carry any gun now.. In the original Xcom in the early missions I just about only used grenades till I got a few missions under my belt.. (everybody can used grendaes).. but heavy weapons require the skill, once you assign on leveling (it is possilbe you can still eqip them, but they will suck with them? not sure) You can MMORPG your soldiers.. different haircuts, skin shades, armour tints.. etc to personalize them along with the standard Name change options. The base has changed from top down to side view , other then being animated not much different. As far as I can tell Research is not done on what you bring back, but how many you bring back.. early stuff is Alien Alloy which requires 5 pieces plus the standard time. Alien anatomy requires 5 corpses.. and time.. etc.. So prepare for having something (corpse) but not being able to research it untill several more are collected.. good-bad? not sure. Engineering (manufacturing) is pretty quick.. the first thing you can make is armour.. i made 4 for my squad almost intantly (tutorial levels, maybe speed up for that?) this was additional armour so instead of replaceing he stuff my troops had I had to remove an item from the back pack and place it there to use it.. I'm not sure on this game design, more strategy in loadouts? it didnt really make sence to me.. but it is what it is.

Missions.. it appears you are going to get 2 at a time sometimes (more then the old game) and you will have to chose in early game. Just like old one.. on nation will give less money ,etc as the aliens build. Once you arrive the game starts tou on ground ( no deploy from aircraft) I liked this.. you would think no more Barrel shooting your guys as they exit like the old Xcom did from time to time. Face it, you landing in a deadly area, you would land a few clicks away and advance.. not right on top of it.. Some wont like this change (and till I play farther in.. maybe they will die on deploy?) but I like it. Other wise its a very nice graphic representation of hte old X-com updated..

But here is where it gets a bit iffy. They have dumbed it down alot to make it more fluid playing. As hte early missions are cake walks my impressions are maybe incorrect. The new simplified movement is a GREAT, its much harder to "overmove" and be helpless like the old X-Com. The ammount of cover you have is veyr easy to see. Your guys always kneel behind it if they need to. You ahve a sprint option to cover vast distaances. You can climb pipes (but strangely so far i cant make a guy climb a ladder) you can jump throuhg a window, kick a door down. it appears everything is distructible.. no more wood walls that take a 100 shots.. (my 2nd mission i was behind some AC units on a roof, one round from an alien blaster had me totally exposed, that AC unit was detroyed). Overall its X-Com, but seems simpler.. good and bad? again not 100% sure, early missions it seems to easy so the simplified movement maybe seems to simplefied.. MY guess is later in game I wont be thinking it. The upside is it leave you thinking far more tacticly.. The old X-com had you knowing "if i go around the barn i can get the drop on them, but it will be 7 turns before i get around, evrybody else will be dead or hiding in cover... BOREING!" so you didnt do it.. This new one with the sprint option makes this tactic far more "fun" no long turns to doit.. still takes a few (and remebre when sprinting, no shot after, so if you sprint into a ambush.. so long!, there are HUGE risks with sprinting)

overall I like most and dislikesmall partsof it.. on the fence about alot of it.. but for just an hour of play I must say im looking very forward to more of it. While X-Com may (and for me IS!) be one of the best tactical games.. it had its downsides. very slow gameplay, very brutal penelties for poor play.. this new X-Com appears to start slower, play WAY WAY faster yet retain most of the old feel. The hardcore (again early game, no idea of missions farther in) will feel its to easy i think..

I will (as will you others) discuss it more with more gamplay.. but so far its seeming quite good (even if i complain about several points) I can see this being my favorite game for the next few months toppng GW II, Torchlight II, Borderlands II (hmmm lots of 2's there) and being the game I play an enjoy the most this last half of the year. but after only an hour of play.. I know that guess is just a guess. more time is needed.. Ah WORK? I need to go home at noon, i have .. um and.. ermergancy ya.. I just wont tell um its an alien emergancy!

Well is anybody still playing

Well is anybody still playing this? I'm feeling my age, or maybe im just believing peoples posts in the forums. I played Classic Hardcore and was doing well till the terror missions, the chryssalids and thier zombie pets are destroying me.. I restarted on Normal/ironman and hit the same terror missions with Crys and died.. I'm now on a restart of NORMAL (no ironman so i can save) and danged if they still are not ripping me up.. i restarted the mission like 5 times now.. they are basically just out of view of my soldiers.. one square move ahead and ... bang.. and I have no room to sidestep around um ( blocked buy items).. I was under the impression the game randomly did maps, but i keep getting this same one (maybe i saved after it generated?)... but its a game breaker for me.. One move in i have 6 crys who infect 4 humans and all move in on my 6 guys.. grenades do 3dmg (so even 2 wont kill any of them).. crits are doing 9 dmg.. kill a crys but not a Zombie.. (and you don't crit regular) I have tried sprinting by.. but crys have more movement then I do... (and worse yet there are floaters and grunts a few squares in too).

I read on teh forums how the "hate" is building for the game.. its to easy, its not the successor of the old school hard X-Com.. I played X-Com on Normal and hard (both and won both).. I can remember it was hard. but I don't recall hitting a brick wall like this. I'm trying to figure out if my skill levels have dropped.. or my single minded "WIN" attitude of old is gone? In the past i played games I didn't enjoy as i felt i had to finish um.. X-Com had more then a little "didn't enjoy" area's.. the map is clear.. oh no, one lone alien someplace.. spend 2 hours painstakingly doing cover based movement to find him (that was not fun in any sense of the word) The new one has eliminated that with the "sound" thing.. people are bitching about this!!! its making it to easy? I do understand it does eliminate some surprise (not completely.. I find they are seldom where the sound came from when i get there).

I'm also having a heck of a hard time capturing live ones..green glob guns are just to deadly to move somebody in close.. and i go in with overwatch.. most often my protection kills the alien as he is to stupid to stay in cover while i sneak up on him (ok so maybe not stupid).

I haven't been this worked up about a game in ages. I think its a great game.. but its frustrating the hell out of me :) I am not saving after every soldier loss.. I AM loading after complete wipes.. Right now I'm tying to decide where I went wrong.. to slow on guns? to slow on Armour? should I really sink my research into one?.. and then.. I'm not getting enough alien shoot downs ( need that for your resources to build) or does that mean i don't have enough satellites? I spammed um after my first few games attempts.. but with no fighter cover they are shooting practice for the aliens.. and way to expensive and long to build to lose um.

Assult, i got rid of the crappy shotguns and switched um to ranged weapons right away... good or bad idea? Shotguns do great dmg up close.. but i tend to use the "death from a distance" gamestyle. and it works great.. right up till a map puts the aliens a square out of view in front. But then Im not sure they would tip the scales in my corner..

great game.. but i feel like im missing some part of the working strategy to keep me going..

Wow, I hadn't heard that this

Wow, I hadn't heard that this was in development for 4 years, but that's the claim I see on wikipedia also. There is still an FPS xcom game in development and its scheduled for 2013. It may be in development even earlier (2006 based on rumors and job postings), but it was the certainly the first game that was announced.

I'm in love with this game!!!

Okay, I will finally take a break to post a little something on this game. Definitely TOP NOTCH. I've been playing for about two days now, trying to squeeze in every bit of gameplay I can. They've nailed the pressure, the feeling that you're just *barely* hanging in there...Great upgrades always around the corner, not just New Gun + 5, but stuff that really changes your tactics...Graphics look great. I'm really enjoying this one.

Been reading.. this game was

Been reading.. this game was in production 4 years!. And yet 2K told as a year ago it was going to be a FPS? marketing strategy? make us fanboys support it even stronger when it came out turn based? Think about howmuch is riding on this, turn based strat has long been dead in AAA titles.. this is a huge gamble by fraxxis.. if it fails.. we will be back to just indy turn based games again. if it succeds, we could see some interesting stuff. Look waht Grimrock has done, revived a long dead gameplay style. I looked and looked at a way to make some game maker do this type of gmae for years.. no body had interst in it at all, indy or otherwise.. no games indy or otherwise.. now I know of at least 5 projects in the vain of Grimrock/DK.. I would loive a fantesy version, sword/board, arrows and magic.. would that rock or what? maybe castle invasion.. i get shakey just htinking about it.. how about a WWII vesion ( yes i know commandos).. cowboys.. Romans, .. so many ways it could be redone. Of course Glut could be an issue then too.

and befoer anybody thinks im some deep thinker.. as I say i been reading (penny arcades blogs are where I read most of what i put above). Just some deep repercusinon if thies fails or not.. metacritic of 90% now (yes, far to easy to cahnge that wih a bunch of fanboy crap comments.. but non hte less, doing ok now).

I've been playing for about

I've been playing for about two or three hours, and my impressions are very similar to yours. I'm getting the screen flicker when I try to raise/lower levels; it seems like the engine can't decide what to shadow. Occasionally losing the interface in the base mode. Otherwise, it's been good.

I am miffed about the armor thing--why the #@$@ can't you replace your body armor with the nano vest, for instance? It doesn't make sense to have to replace your grenade, medikit, or arc weapon just to carry a vest. I hope that eventually I can upgrade the default body armor that everyone wears. That just really seems stupid to me ATM.

I'm playing on normal difficulty and have already had to reload a few times to get a decent outcome. I'm not the type who likes to continue after losing some of my squad. I'm not in a big rush to finish the game, thankfully, so I afford to play a map a few times to get it right.

Well i can tell you my

Well i can tell you my wondering if it was dumbed down to much have all disappered.. This is a great re-imagining of the old game we love. I am hooked hard.. 3am first night.. 3am last nite too.. im working on 6 hours sleep in last two days.. The new combat is just so much faster paced, and the new 2 step movment makes moving up so much easeir then on old game. The old game was truley a traditional turn based game, no assistance, everything was on your shoulders.. and I mean MICRO-micro managing .. In a way almost to much. The new game lets you put everything into your tactics and think less about snap shots, knelling, Ap points, etc.. they have simply made it more visable on movment, just made it easier to play. I know some will not like this, but the original X-Com still plays fine so if you still want it super Micro managed you can still play it. I still think the tactical side is strong, and it still takes some good play/cover/team cover fire to win. X-Com (original) afte you started getting into game could take hours and hours to finish hard missions, the new one, I doubt you will spend 2 hours on any mission, dont getme wrong, you will spend plenty of time making small moves slowly to work to where oyu want to be.. its just that the movment has been so drasticly changed it seems speedy now.

Many are screaming its to easy.. I hate to judge but I think to many are playing in normal mode (not classic) or the harder settings.. the tutorial levels are easy even the hard settings, but it ramps alot quicker once the game starts. I think its the 5 minute'ers who are saying this. played the first couple missions and it was cake.. its not cake later.

Some things I dont like
Buggy.. i get a missing return arrow alot (means you are stuck in a screen and cant leave.. game over, no save no nothing) at leat 4 times in 10 or so hours of play. I get alot of strange video flicker.. But ATI corssfire setups are kinda flakey at times a nd tis not game breaking.. justannoying in certian screens
backpacks- wow.. i can carry 2 guns and and item.. and thats about it.. (and armour).. upside no more ammo.. (you still reload in battles, just dont have to carry ammo, this is good change imho). they are doing some game balance things with this.. no packing a grenade, a alien stun gun and +3 armour pads.. one , but not all 3..

Cover- is it just me or does the alien side of the map alwasy seem to hav cover closer togther then my side? maybe my imagination.

over all this a Love at first site game for me.. I would guess some warts will show later.. but right now its incredibly fun.
