In this video, I take an exclusive early look at the Atari Flashback 4 from AtGames, which will be released in the US in time for the holidays. This is part 1. Part 2, which will be released a week or so after, will feature more live footage to get an even better sense of the quality of the system and its capabilities. Look for part 1 of 2 of Armchair Arcade's next exclusive video review, coming soon, on several new Sega-related products from AtGames, which will also be released in time for the US holiday season.

Download the video here.

Disclosure: Bill Loguidice provided unpaid consulting services to AtGames during the creation of this product. This consulting was related to product performance and marketing feedback, but did not involve anything related specifically to its engineering or production. All review units were provided by AtGames.

No, it's a new creation special for this device. For some reason, Taito requested it as part of the licensing deal, even though the other games were left alone.

And Still no backdrop....Space Invaders does have one. It seems to be the most forgotten item when making a Space Invaders port.

By backdrop do you mean the moonscape artwork? The Taito Legends version has the backdrop, as does the Saturn and SNES versions.

That overlay and the way the graphics sort of float are what make the Space Invaders series machines so special in the arcade. I bet a similar effect could be achieved on the 3DS, or even the HD consoles, if tweaked correctly. Faking it otherwise for the home really doesn't compare...

Part two

Like I mentioned in the Sega reviews thread: "Sorry guys, looks like I'll be recording on Thursday. There won't be many edits, so it's possible it will go up very late Thursday night, but late Friday night worst case." Thanks!

While they can sqweeze alot

While they can sqweeze alot out of the 2600, i just dont think an overlay (or underlay) is possible :) even in some very crude form. But from that video it appears they are not sticking to the limtations of the plain old 2600 anyways, heck it looks like they have much smaller "blocks" to animate the invaders.. and the mothership could never be done like it was on 2600 hardware (flicker city). But even then, i doubt whatever is in that small box cant do overlays even if they had wanted to. I know I used to see alot of MAME cabs missing them old overlays (such a simple thing to fix), they do add to it for sure..

It goes into the composite in on your television. It's the yellow input. The audio goes into the white jack next to it. The Flashback's cables are color coded the same.
