A couple thoughts, because I refuse to "twitter" on Walking Dead FPS and Flashcarts defense....

Rob Daviau's picture

Ok, I had a couple thoughts just shaking aorund my head and I just refuse to do the "twitter" thing (yep I am a stubborn old fogy, GET OFF MY LAWN!)

Anyway, I just heard that The Walking Dead is coming by Activision (based on the AMC TV show) as an FPS. Now, thing is I am DAMN SICK of FPS games but damned if I am not a Walking Dead Junkie. I mean, I thought the Telltale Walking Dead Games would not be so great but damn was I ever surprised how fun and engrossing it turned out to be!

Also, the Turbo Everdrive was recently announced for Pre-order and I love me some Flash cards and I don't care who doesn't or has a problem with them but I love being able to have the entire library selectable by menu on a single cart, save room and try games on my actual hardware myself before tracking down and over spending on a cartridge title that turns out to be a crappy game. The things that many seem to get the wrong idea about when it comes to flash cart are:
1. THEY ARE EMULATION.
No they are not. The carts do not emulate a console, they simply load the same code a single cartridge does except the greater capacity allows you to store more code (IE: The entire library + of games) unlike an software emulator or even console clones (which "Emulate" the original hardware) once the game is loaded, provided it is a proper rom it is indistinguishable from the original game. Games, even in ROM form run and execute on emulated hardware or software that is emulating the original console (or computer, or arcade board as the case may be) when you get incompatibilities in sound, or glitches in the graphics or the game not running at all or crashing this is due to inaccuracies of the hardware emulation whether that is a software emulator on your PC (or portable, or even other game console) load that same rom using a flashcart on your original console and it is just the same as loading the original cartridge. People tend to mash flashcarts into the same category as emulators because they do not understand the process that is actually taking place.

2. People argue that flashcarts diminish or devalue their collection
I also find people get defensive because they think flashcarts somehow diminishes the value of their cartridge collection. I have "discussed" this topic with people who are very "anti-flashcart" so to speak, I don't have a problem with that, really what do I care what you chose? But I do have issues when people are misinformed, making points or arguing on assumption or a total ignorance of the subject. My thing has always been, hey, if you love tracking down every single cartridge, paying for and waiting to have shipped to you that specific gem of a title then great, more power to you, whatever floats your boat, but I do not buy that my or anyone's choice of buying a flashcart is hurting classic gaming, or somehow diminishing the value or validity of your collection. I mean, if anything, many people chose flashcarts to play homebrew, beta, demos or even unreleased games! Many people buy and use flashcarts for convenience and still continue to buy original carts. Do some people like me, when they get a flashcart stop buying carts for that particular platform? YES, sure, of course some do, becuase like me, they no lounger have the room to store library's of carts and with a flashcart they can spare the room for other things like, maybe even other consoles or hardware. Then, what do we DO with our old carts? Well, having been former collectors and people in the gaming community we don't toss them heaven forbid) we'll sell them, trade them, stick them on Ebay AND WHO DO YOU THINK GET'S THEM? Well, I guess they go back into circulation for all you collectors, all you die hards, all you flash card "haters" to track down and add to your precious collection. It's CALLED WIN - WIN! Everybody is happy.

So to all you anti flash card people.... GET OVER IT!

Hah, and let me just add one last little tidbit before ending this, now that the Turbo Everdrive is available for Pre-order I would like to get the inevitable question that someone always asks out of the way NOW (just like for the EverdriveMD) Will it run CD games? Uhm...NO! Why would you think that? Now, before you get all "Well I just thought I would ask!" I ask you to consider, don't you think if you could load and run CD iso's or CD images IT WOULD BE A BIG FRIGGIN OUTLINED FEATURE? THINK McFLY THINK!

DAYZ

Walking Dead- read the comics too!!!! its excellent and so far they have changed it up enough both are worth checking out and you wont feel like your doing ti twice.. In fact I love how they both differ enough that Im really looking forward to wahts next on the TV show. And for all of you who love this.. look forward to another GREAT comic to be made inot tv ( or a movie maybe) "Y the Last Man" same type of story telling (and no its not zombies.. last man may throuhg you off).

As for the walking dead FPS... after DAYZ (I couldnt recomend this MOD more highly, read about it below) became such a huge hit I knew it had to happen.

Flash card: alwasy figured one of the good reasons for um was so you didnt wear out your cart.. sliding metal contacts in and out will wear it out.. these machines where made for 5-10 years of use..nobody desgined um for 50 years. Think about it, metal contacts .. heck the NES has shown this to a lesser degree, its not wearing out, but simple dust..

DAYZ- mod for ARMA II, this mod has put this old game at the top of the STEAM sales charts.. its that good. You play a survior in a zombie infessted world.. with others.. but not TEAM based.. its all about realistic survival.. no leg shots and you can run, no loss of blood and you go on.. you have to have bandages and pain killers when wounded, food and water.. its all about finding stuff and not dying.. no grand goal other then to live.. other players can team with you or just kill you for your stuff.. average life span in game is 30 some minutes right now.. and thats exagerated as it starts you away from stuff and just finding a zombie or something else can (not all the time) take 30 mintues. This is a realistic simulation of a zombie outbreak ( saying realistic and zombies in same sentance is worth Points right?).

the game is buggy, teh AMRA engine is complex.. way to complex the game IS HARD, not only becuase of the style of game play (realistic) but the ARMA engine is not a high point (in my opinion) as its far to complex button pusher.. its a good engine for looks and realistic ..just not for the players who dont like 10,000 buttons to do things.

I HIGHLY recomend this game, its the BEST survival HORROR type game I have ever seen done in a open world. If you have ARMA II ($29 on steam) or even if you dont, read up ont ehDAYZ mod and decide.. ARMA II is not worth $29, but the MOD is in my opinion. If this had been done in a COD or BF.. ore even UNREAL (engine) it could have been game of the year.. Once again the BEST game I hve seen this year is free (if you have ARMA II)..

I'm a big Walking Dead fan,

I'm a big Walking Dead fan, too. I have read most of the comics and of course seen the show. It's good to hear they're different, because I actually stopped reading the comic because I didn't want to spoil the show.

I read the comic a few years ago when it was new, was excited to see who the tv series did. But with all things i never did catch it (on tv). but later heard how huge a hit it was for AMC, which really suprised me.. AMC the station that cuts movies to shreds so anybody can watch um? how could they do a good adaption of this? So i torrent the show and watched... it all! in one night..I too felt, why bother, the comic was so great and normally moveins or tv shos pretty much are the lesser of the two. BUT no.. the show is great, same characters (almost) and alot fo the same plotlines.. some with the same enedings some without.. but most no matter which are not the same... changed enough to make um both quite enjoyable..

SPOILERS---------------- Tried to keep um somewhat light.. dont read if you havent watched both TV seasons.

Dale- he does die int eh comics.. but way farther down the road, this was my big shocker "change" he was such a HUGE part of the story for a long time.. I wonder how they are going to do it. SHANE... dead.. but differnt person shot him in comic and this one I'm not so happy with.. I'm sure it was done .. well you just dont show who shot him in hte comics shooting people.. not on TV anywasy.. heck not evne in movies.. it did work though.. comic had big repercustions and really outlined how much the world has changed.. I just hope the TV show hand having Rick kill him isnt ruining hte big deal on humans deaths in the prison. Kinfa took the sting of that sotryline and moved it up .. SO MUCH cool stuff awaits.. the prison, the walled town (that one I'm really looking forward too, but as its really towards the end of the current comic its a LONG ways away.. seasons.. at the current rate.. I doubt we will see it.. be 10 season in or more).

Yeah, me too. I am wondering

Yeah, me too. I am wondering how wild they're going to get, since there's some sick stuff that happens in the prison in the comics.

I loved both seasons, though the finale kinda bothered me with the sudden appearance of the samurai lady. The whole thing up to that point was very real and not "comic booky," but they definitely flew over that line with her appearance (just in the nick of time, it's dark lady with a hood and two blades!) Yuck. Don't get me wrong, I love cheesy comics, but I just don't want my walking dead to suddenly get all Marvel-tastic on us.

I don't remember her being that cheesy in the comics, but maybe that's just false memory. I do wonder if they're going to show what happens to her when (and if) they get to that town.

I agree she is the most "comic" part of the Walking Dead.. But in a sad way it does make some MILD sense.. ammo runs out, swords do not.. *but humans can only do so much "sword swinging" before they will be out of breath too.. and takeing heads off and jaming a sword throuhg a head (skull) has got to take some effort. I did find it sad her backstory is only in PLAYBOY (yes playboy got in on the Walking Deads popular bandwagon) it works pretty well if you have read it. The "TOWN" is very comic/movie like too.. but they temper it with some real characters (the doctor) which evens it out. Good thing the whole prison story line has to be gone throuhg first.

I still need to finish game of Thrones 2nd season too.. I been resisting watching as this house buying stuff has me to distracted to put the time it requires.. Love that Tyrion i want to be him when i grow up.

Game of Thrones is stunning. Every episode is an emotional roller coaster and is so dense with content and detail. My previous favorite high point of fantasy on TV (aka, D&D-like) was Season 2 of Legend of the Seeker, but partly because that was more straightforward and partly because it was on regular television, it misses out on the grit and "rawness" that Game of Thrones is able to achieve. Game of Thrones has set the standard for high fantasy regardless of platform (yes, even movies). I truly hope they can get through all the books. It's wildly popular now, but it is very expensive to produce and one worries if both interest and quality can be sustained long-term.
