Warlock- supposed succesor to Master of Magic..

I hear its the Civ engine with a fantasy setting, as stated a NEW Masters of magic! its been tried before..
read this short review
http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2012/05/07/does-warlock-master-of-the-a...
The forums where pretty upbeat.. if a bit lacking on posts.. pardox, makers of copy cat games in the 100's, with some good and many many bad. Some cool ideas exacuted poorly... is this a boom or bust?

I was very excited.. its $20, looks good, the Master of Magic guys seem to like it.. that review above tipped me.. I purchased it last night after reading it ( downloaded it last night while i played Secret world)... Ilove the part on the AI.. the part about random Heavies..

I must admit its easy to excite me.. and I find somthing to like in most games.. but this review.. just did it for me.. and I normally dont buy on words alone.. but this guy just sold one game..

So bottom line: good game, maybe even (for me) great. I really like it. i was hoping for something a littel closer to MoM.. but this is pretty good as is. Ihavent run into anything I hate, the AI seems more then good enough. My guess is the hardcore may not think so.. I was playing on NORMAL it has 5 settings, easy, casule, normal, hard and brutal (not those names). I may popit down one more just for the first few games.. better to win on easy then get frustrated and quit.

Heck, Clok, I'm tempted to buy this game after reading your review, so the subject of this thread is appropriate! Civ with a fantasy setting sounds like a winner to me; I know full well how addictive Civ is. Civ is so addictive that I'm afraid to play it anymore! "Just one more turn..." and then suddenly, you notice you've grown a full beard since you started playing.

I've purchased a few games based on Matt's reviews, and purchased "Archon Classic" based on Bill's review. I even downloaded "World of Tanks" based on your ravings, although I never got around to playing it beyond the opening screens due to other distractions.

Spenet almost all night last

Spenet almost all night last night laying this, some of the luster has worn off. The game is not as DEEP as Civ on the management side, but is alot more robust on the combat side. Diplomicy is a joke.. so far i have my enemy (not active, we are not attacking each other) send me "give me, gold/mana/" and its normally about 1/3 of what you have.. and you have 2 options.. give it, or declare war.. no counteroffer or refuse and make him hate you a bit more.. just give or WAR.. I had figured if i pressed first ( request small amounts) it might counteract this.. but no.. WAR! for small amounts even.. worthless to have this in game.. I guess it can stave off attack for maybe 10-30 rounds.. but if you pay its the old story...he just keeps asking. The problem with this model is.. the second you encounter your first enemy, he will ask in 2-5 rounds.. which will gimp you no matter what.. taking a 1/3 or 1/2 of one resource effectivly gimps you and superpowers him.. yes I can refuse.. but then its war.. and normally on uneven terms.. early game is explore.. I was like 10 rounds in with 3 armies built.. and I notice the enemy AI has 5 armies on my border.. ok so he has 2 more then me.. HOW? i dont know as most armies take 2 rounds to build.. but I will give him the bonus two armies.. 10 more rounds he is taking NPC cities.. WTH!!!!! he had those 5 armies on my border 9all 10 turns) and built enouhg to explore and take cities too? not sure how that can be.

The singel reason i have pretty much said screw Civ games.. I suck at um.. and now it sure feels like the AI is cheating.. (no i have not won a match yet).. I am sticking to normal. I guess i gotta notch it down a bit. it wouldnt be so bad, but tehse games take lots of time to play.. and if the game is cheating ( no.. I'm not 100% sure.. but it sure seems like it) by endgame he has so damn many armies i cant win..

I still like the game alot.. its not Civ.. its not Master of Magic.. in fact its kinda a watered down version of either or both.. its got alot of options, but some are throw away ( diplomicy) in the game so oyu can say it has it.. but so broke its not worth having. this game is not about city managment.. (i have never had issues with resources, grain farm or two and a granery(doubles all farms production) etc.. ) very easy to keep up with my demands (untill later in game when army sizes gets more exciting on large maps.. but each town will support at least 4-6 armies with ease (and more when they grow) if you dont build all mana or food hogs.. but you can custom build towns to support either.. all farms... or all mana sinks.

it plays alot quicker and easier then the deeper games it tries to copy.. and i think this is one reason i like it.. I see alot of ways to play the game.. but i never felt overwhlemed ( except for that damn AI asking for money or War all the time) and many turns in when i see he has huge armies in the fog of war.. just baiting me in. I like the game enouhg its frustrating me, yet I keep playing.. but I know if i dont pull off a win by the end of this weekend.. its getting shelved.. so one more difficulty level down (dang game makes you feel like a wimp for it)...

Started Warlock at about 10PM

Started Warlock at about 10PM last night, played untill almost 3AM.

Its NOT Master of Magic, but it does take some Q's from it. If i had to describe it, I would say Civ with magic. You cant stack units, they all take a hex. I'm not sure if they get bonus's buy haveing units in hexes beside um (several Paradox war games do this, this one seems like it doesnt). You can move units trough other (freindly) units as long as landing square is unoccupied (this is important in my opinion). Seigeing cities have pretty strong bonus, so taking 3-4 units to a city and having it defended by a single unit .. you wont win. ranged units seem OP at the moment to me.. Melee units that attack, get counter attacked, ranged do not. Ranged have less HP, but most do about the same damage as there melee counterparts. I am sure the game designers havent missed something here.. but at low level it seems they have, my guess is my army of Skelton archers ( bones take 1/3rd damge from normal ranged!) will be desimated by something (ghosts maybe who take ZERO! damage from normal weapons). All units level and have specific perks.. when they level you get a choice of 3 that you can pick.. any order.. but untill those 3 are all used no new one show. but if oyu lve them 3 times a new set of 3 shows.. how far that can go? not sure at least 6 levels. As you are a wizard, you research spells , you cna cast one a turn it seems as long as you have the mana. So far I'm finding any spell that summons UNITS is excellent to use. I can have a new unit every turn (keep in mind units created by spells use mana every turn) and thy level like any othe unit. As i have undead and summoned units.. i burn mana.. but that is where city building comes in.. you can custum buil your cities to produce mana, food, money, etc.. but you also need other buildings to build specific armies. And like any Civ game the map has natural resorces all over so you want to build by them so you cna build on top of them . CIties expand as they grow to ocover more area (again, this all Civ like). My major complaint in Civ games is build time.. those 200 turn items.. and micor managing avery city (fun, but as you grow its so easy to forget whats what).. this game pop's up icons on right side.. if a city can build something, it will let you know.. click it it goes to first city that can build, click it again, second.. etc.. same for recruiting troops, etc.. so the game wshows you whre tou need to go.. BUT! if you skip building in a city one turn it doesnt seem to tell you again.. so if you are saving resources a turn and dont build you need to remeber to go back later. Same with Units.. I never felt like I needed units, i could build them fast enouhg, it was more about resource managment.. so later in game when I had enouhg units.. and i quit building them I had enouhg cities it was hard to remeber who built what (not that hard, but when oyu make it super easy, you tend to notice when its not). the units all say somthing when clicked.. love it or hate.. its fun to start.. but my rat archers singing Pokey, pokey! every time you attacked got old a few hours in. There may be option to shut that off? As with all games units can gain terrain advantages. but I think they are based on the perks.. not global.. so if you level your rat archers and take the perk where they take 30% less damage in rouhg terrain.. just they have it.. So tree's dont give everybody 30% less damge when in like most games like this.. just if you ahve the perk (i think.. I have not read any manual and didnt look at specific units when in these areas to check stats, i was having to much fun playing, its possible the perk is added to a global).

the game appears based on the Majesty Kingdom sim.. the guy who give you your missions is the same one, many of the units appear to be ripped straight from Majesty II. WHich.. means they all look just fine. As a fan of the Majety games this made me feel right at home.. in fact sveral things seem to cross over.. mage towers (n cities) can attack any units 2 hexes away. Most of the strange Temples are in the game Krypta, etc.. and the units are too. the graphics look fine to me, but this type of game doenst need much.. all units look distinct enough if oyu pay attention ( at one point i was freaking out as my skeleton warriors was fighting the enmies skeleton warriors and his where killing 3-4 of mine.. till i saw they where Veteran skelton warriors and did look different (more armour)).. The map is colorfull and animated and is very "magic" like.. There are random units that will attack you or your enemies.. there are (like Master of magic) world portals that lead to a complety NEW map.. but they are HIGH risk areas, but as they say, with risk comes reward.

its CIv with magic, unit build times are alot shorter so it gives the player alot more to do then Civ does, later in game this can backfire a bit as there is so much to do. its not any new thing, but if you like CIv ( i tend to not play Civ games as I'm a turtle defensive player and that doesnt work, expand and protect!) you will like this i think. I plays faster, simpler, but not so much as to detract from why Civ games are so great.. you play it to fast and lose and you will lose.. My first (very long game) i was owning till i expanded way to quick.. got in the classic, war on two fronts problem and kept pulling back to recover.. when your army gets so big, and you can keep them alive to regroup but lose territory.. you lose upkeep.. you lose.. The AI was said to be good in a review I read.. and I agree.. its got some very bad flaws.. park a solo unit on the edge of the enmies lands and park some good units a hex or so away. the enemy will commit a good force to kill that one enemy on his border.. in which case you can mop up easy.. Basicly you can pick and chose where you fight.. and if he sends to much to handle.. they will only attack that unit on its border.. so you can just back off, lose one unit and be ok.. When I played the game I never felt it was to easy.. it was almost perfect.. I had no issues as i built at the start.. but as i grew and became a bigger threat its like the AI new this.. and delt with me on better (and almost alwasy equal feeling terms) I never felt like i do in most of these games.. "where the heck did he pull 10 armies from"? he did suprise me a few times.. for sure.. i had a very nice 6-8 leveld unit army slowy movin up the map to my enmies.. and he used mountains ( flying units only) to put dragons at my back.. and hit regualr units at my front.. no retreat.. fight and take out as many as i could so he cant mount a better offence.. he outsmarted me.. classic die, but kill as many as I can.. I lost all my leveled units. but cost him a ton too.. so we wher both in rebuild stage, so neither could press.. BUT he used cheaper units and strategy, I was trying to press with better units and brute force..So in the end we both where in the same stage.. fresh units.. I lost alot of leveling, but it freed up alot of resources so i could rebuild quickly.

I lost my first game , well not lost, conceded defeat at about 3Am last night. I was learning the game as the tutorial is almost worthless.. so unless you have played Civ games (or took the time to read the online manual) it would be pretty hard to just jump into.

So bottom line: good game, maybe even (for me) great. I really like it. i was hoping for something a littel closer to MoM.. but this is pretty good as is. Ihavent run into anything I hate, the AI seems more then good enough. My guess is the hardcore may not think so.. I actually have Warlock and

I actually have Warlock and the DLC pack in my GamersGate press account. I don't know if I'll have time to try it, though, but I'll certainly be tempted if you deem it worthy, Clok...
