I think you're right,

I think you're right, Clok--if you hate wow you just hate mmorpg's.

That said, I had a God-awful experience with it last night and canceled my subscription. I even uninstalled it! I truly have a love hate relationship with wow and am definitely in the hate phase.

I would Press WoW a little

I would Press WoW a little harder with him.. No matter how you slice it, its the most complete Online MMOPRG experiance. While i dont play it anymore ( I still have 2 active subscriptions and i peak in here and there fora few hours every once and awhile) Its simply the best content wise. leveling, equiping, tradeskills, mounts, vanity pets, factions, achievments, holiday events, and lore. Unless oyu been plaing for years there is always something to do.. some carrot to get.

BUT if one insists to leave it alone.

SWonline: good looking (very wow like, not hyper real graphics, like watching a cartoon), polished look and gameplay. Well loved universe with recongnizable characters. Well done voice acting and good look. As its a new game, its took the same old standard gameplay and refinded it to a about as good a experiance as possible. I found it fun enough becuase of the setting and polish. CONS: same gameplay as EVERY other MMORPG.

Tera: Excellent looking game, but if you have seen one asain MMORPG you have seen this one.. Vindictuis, Swords, Linage II, All the Perfect Worlds games (they have about 30 F2P) Aion, etc.. follow the same art direction, so if your like me and try um all, you start to see a sameness to it. pretty much a copy of the "standard' every game uses. Basicly the ONLY real change is the Combat system. This will make or break the game for you. Its alot more action-y then other RPG's. Honestly the best comparasion i can give is a Slower Demons Souls/Dark Souls combat system. Slighlty like Skyrim/Alumar... the idea is the same. You must face your enemy, you must watch and anticipate his attacks ( which are all telegraphed in some way). Where it difffers is, its online, lag and such come into effect, so its not as fast paced as a singel player game, its also alot more forgiving. not to a point where it doenst take skill to do, but its not reliant on perfect aim.. I would guess ( no facts to back this) it uses a CONE, you are facing an enemy and he is 15 degrees of center, you will still hit him.. its not like a FPS where you need to be dead on.. but you do need to aim. My biggest Love is the BLOCKING?Damage Avoidance.. when a treant lowers his shoulder for a charge, if you BLOCK with a shield you take NO DAMAGE.. so the game requires some blocking to play a tank.. but here is the tactics part.. as a tank you need to damage the mob, so you ahve to balance Blocking the BIG uber damage attacks, and eating the smaller ones and attacking yourself.. and of course the better you are, you can avoid more Dmage and sneak more attacks in.. Early in the game you can fight and take NO damage and Kill the mobs.. it gets alot harder later. if you just sit and defend and take no damage.. eventlay the mob wont care about oyu it will one shot the mages, and your tanking ability will get some intense examinations by the group :)

I make it sound very deep, its not really, in fact its a very littel change, instead of picking skills ot spam and cooldowns, you just pick block or attack, they do add combos', some the game does for you, simple example, my lancer has a pretty basick thrust attack.. you uses it 3X the screen will pop up a "spacebar to power thrust" and you tap the spacebar and you do a 3X damage attack that can knock down enemies. you can also use specific skills (most have some form of crowd control as I menitoned earleir some mobs come in packs).. the lancer has a shield bash type thing that knocks a bunch down.. and a attack wher you can do normal damage, but keep your shield up too (invicilbe .. yes.. but it lasts like 6 seconds and has a 30 second cooldown).. and you get more and more.. the game also lets you set combos.. like 3 strikes then do power thrust, and if connects, do shield bash.. (i'm not deep enouhg in game tyo use these effectively yet, and even really describe them well).

I find this addition to combat a simple but effective refresh on somethinghta has been stqale in MMORPGs for a long time. I alsmot look at it is a very slowed down Street fighter style combat.. you can chain combos, you can block ( and likes SF, super attacks can be blocked, but not so no damage takes place). I was very worried about this combat system makeing hte game all action and reaction time, but it not.. its paced slow enough anybody should be able ot do it.. but has enough stratgy that good players will excel.

Can you tell i enjoy it? Please take it with a grain of salt.. I pretty much enjoy all MMORPG's when they are new.. and grow tired of them later.. SWOnline.. I didnt really car for till I played an EVIL character.. then I enjoyed the heck out of it.. till endgame.

Btween Tera and SWonline: tough choice. SW is simply recongnizable, so its easy to like.. but in the end it felt like play every other game, just star wars paint. Tera.. every other game.. but with a make or break combat system.. If you dont like the combat.. you wont like the game, simple as that.. nd there is the RUB.. no way to try without buy.. that I know off.. I thin SW has some free weekend once and awhile.. i will check (i think they have so you can invite a freind for 2 days or something, if they do I will let you know Matt and if you want I can send you one so you can try it). Tera.. nothing like that yet as its new.

personally: WOW is above all others simply as it has the best content/things to do.. TERA has cool combat ( but I reserve final judgment till i play more.. its very possilbe it will feel like busy work later in game) SWonline.. Im not a huge SW fan.. so it was just another game to me.. i felt it was good to start, but died quickly with repetative nature.. the first 20 levels where fun as it felt closer ot a single player RPG game to me.. felt a bit more Personal (i think the voice acting for all quests did that).. but after level 20 its jus the smae old same old.. and i bored quickly.

long post, can you tell I do enjoy MMORPG's... its just so hard to pick one to recomend as they are a bit like music.. we all like differnt things. But even likeing something, when oyu do it over and over.. it gets boring.. I like Tera alot for the comabt, but can see it possilby get old after 50 levels.. it really depends if they can keep comming up with new ways for Monsters to attack.. and keep my attacks interesting.

So are you guys still playing Old Republic? I noticed it's down to $30.

I played 3 characters to max level none took more then a a week or two.. The game had a pretty cool quest system, people actually talked.. but otherise it wasnt new in any other way. While most games strive to make the end game engageing, it felt.. dull to me, like it was much better at the start then the end. I'm still paying, but need to shut it off.

Hmm...I've been looking at

Hmm...I've been looking at reviews and the trailer. I was turned off at first thinking it was just a JRPG-wannabe WOW clone, but it looks like the combat really sets it apart.

Brother is already piqued in it--the "babes" had him. ;) Gonna take more than that to get me to try it. Maybe the combat would be enough to offer some relief from the WOW doldrums.

Looks like a mix of Western

Looks like a mix of Western D&D style, anime, and WoW to me... Not sure if I like it, but at least it's not distinctly one thing I guess.

It doesn't look very Anime-ish to me...

It looks only mildly Anime-ish, and that's debatable, judging from the official trailer. Maybe the oversized swords... but there's definitely some JRPG-style influence. It's certainly not modern "Wizardry" cutesy anime!

Here's a cinematic trailer from TERA online:

One of the gameplay videos on Youtube I watched does show some "bunny-girls" that definitely look cutesy-Anime, and they look way out of place in this game. Most of it looks more like Western "Faerie" style artwork to me. It's all very bright and colorful.

It actually quite resembles "Perfect World" at first glance. Certainly an attractive game.
