quick thoughts on TERA, i was in beta and did PAY for this and also paid for a 6 months sub (save a few bucks).

Game is nothing new, fantasy setting, uses asian inspired graphics like so many do now. I must admit it is one of the better looking games and is quite colorfull at times and can be bleek. Quests are the standard, collect, kill, fetch, again, nothing new.
So why play it you ask?

character classes: you can tell this game is asian, it covers all the bases.. Humans, A race that looks a bit like Sexy demons (for the goth wanna be's), a Dragon like humonoid race (for those who like Brute looks), the Humans, A race of cute furry crittters (every asain anima game has um), loli's (in game slang name, race that looks like 13 year old girls with very grown up perportions... again an Asain taste it seems as they all have the pedopile races), and Elves.. the males have a very Boy toy look and the females are about as close to perfect as one gets in a game.. presonally i love the HUGE selection.. and while they are silly i picked the furry guys (mine looks like an overstuffed rabbit). I also made a Female Elf scorceress (fro all the typical male reasons... she is pleasent to look at). I cant sy another game does a better job of really giving you choices..

Classes: againt he standards, but mixed up a bit. A warrior is not a tank like most games, even healers are not the same. But it has most of the standards.. tank, scorceress, priest, and some new names (but same old stuff).. there are TANKS, Dmage dealers and healers.

Where the game changes things up some: there is NO lock on system like almostevery other RPG.. also unlike most you can AVOID damage with certain abilities and skills. They have changed the standard "hit key1, hit key 2, hit key 3, wait for refresh, repeat" playstyle.. YOU HAVE TO AIM!.. yes there is a crosshair.. there is range (you cant put a BAM* in corsshair a mile away and hit it) ... If you carry a shiled and BLOCK... you can take zero damage (all classes have some type of dmage avoidance.. the Archer has a skill whre you jump back 20 feet). At first I was almost disapointed with this system.. FPS in my RPG.. But while it sounds a bit like that, its not. YES you do aim, but its not like a FPS where pin point accrecy matters. if hte Mob is in front of you, you will hit him. Its not really precision based, the game just makes you move and pick your target. This opens up a HUGE tactics playstyle. Tanks can block.. but if they block to much damage it means they are not attacking.. and holding agro.. so they need to balance that. Damage dealers cant just count ont he tank to hold agro. they Have to pay ATTENTION ( intereseting concept.. people been playing without watching the screen so long it may just bother them). Healers cans just hid and click on portratits to heal.. Heals are AIMED too.. and most have AOE heals.. so GROUPS have to really work toghter.. if you are all running whilly nilly the healer cant heal effectively. its a way the game developers can fine tune encounters, and the players cna actually think to overcome them.. instead of offtank and heal cycles. its a new way to play.. and a way alot fo the gold guard are going to hate.. after years automating encountes in WoW, etc.. with addons.. they are going to have to play the game again.. this will be this game strong point or downfall.. Period..

*BAM- yes thats an in game name BIG ASS MONSTERS.. while most look very cool, alot have that annoying cute look asian designers love.. right beside some of the best nasty evil designed monsters.. its a surreal thing. Another difference is the fact alot of monsters are 1 big one and a group of small ones followin it.. so you fight an intense 10 on one battle. AND BAM, most bosses are HUGE, most games ahve a few named mobs that are big, not so here, many are. They do stick to the generic, wander for no reason model, but we are all used ot that, so ...

So far i find it a interesting fresh thing added to a old , much loved game play style. I like that i can BLOCK and avoid that hamer swing, I like i can time my attacks. its a bit like an Action game (skyrim, alumar, Demons souls) but its not so precise that failing will cost me... hence us old guys who reaction times have dimmed can still get alot out of it. healing may be a weak area with the new aim system as people do not group up enough and are used to teh 'chicken run' method of playing, get damage, run all over willy nilly. As i say i think it ads more tactics to the game.. requireing a new set of thinking. but as WoW has shown, not many people like change. The Mobs are all a bit like old school games.. each has a specific way of attacking. Which helps you time blocks and your attacks. A tail wag, a cred flash in eyes, a howl, a step back.. all mean some kind of attack.. some mean a singel attack, some means block for a few attacks ( punch out on nintendo... learn each boxer, you learn each mob)

one thing I really like.. Boss mobs that should require a group (I think i read no Boss should require more then 3 players) can be soloed by a good player.. and I love that challange aspect. I have solo'ed a few instances with my tank (lancer) and its a good feeling.

Overall I really like the step they have taken, its not new, but its new enough (combat) to make me play. I woldnt recomend it to anybody who is tierd of MMORPG, its really not differnet enough. I wouldnt recomend it to people who dont want ot spin to attack stuff behind you, dont like to not attack (while blocking, avoiding) and time thier attacks. Combat is really the only thing changed.. and as its about 75% of most MMORPG's.. you will need to enjoy its new style or you will be bummed out quickly.

the only spot i can see a real problem is PvP.. reaction time will play a bit more into that.. and if you have played any online PvP, you know people hop around like bunnies now.. with actual aimed combat. he who can spin, straff, and attack will win.. Personally i had my fill of PvP in WoW in the orignal days before it got so gear depenedent.. i wont miss it..

Ya i kept hearing "the

Ya i kept hearing "the loli's" didnt know what it ment.. and did find out :( I know several of the girls in the guild said they looked Cute. I think it comes down to if you think its bad or not.. or ... um.. titilating or not.. its been around a long time.. linage II (also korean i believe) has some awfully sexy adult women.. and dwarfs.. the males look very dwarf, and the females.. Loli's and the first i had seen in a game.. keep in mind Linage II is about 10 years old now. I'm sure they where in many other places.. but its the first i had seen um.. LineageII at its release was aswome looking.. world was seamless, no zoning (well some but not much) some dungons where so you could walk over and look down into them and see people , very cool.. one of the very best creative monsters i had ever seen in a game.. unforntalty it was a SUPER GRIND FEST. maybe the worst i have ever seen in a game, it made EQ look like childs play for leveling grind. go to about 4:10 to see the dwarf females.. watch the whole thing and see the desert folks, humans, elves, orcs, dark Elves.. all look like super sexy traditional fanatay characters...then the Loli's.. it was lso the first game i had seen (MMORPG) where they gave the dark elves.. jiggle.. strange.. as all other races females didnt have it.. just he Dark Elve females (bet you cant guess what I played :) )

its jsut part of fantasy... sex.. but its starting to border on sick.. i just keep telling myslef if I dont enjoy it nothings wrong with me..

I can only assume that

I can only assume that Koreans and Japanese have very, very different attitudes about sex and porn that we do. I did look up the ages of consent for Korea and Japan and was surprised to see they were both only 13!

There's some pretty shocking discussions going on over "neo-lolicon" (don't bother looking that up, you'll be sorry). The argument I found over and over again was that as long as it's just drawings, it's all fine no matter what is depicted. Huh? I just can't get past the fact that somebody who gets off on that stuff must be sick in the head.

I'm wondering now if this pedo stuff is just the start. If this actually brings the perverts (and their credit cards) in mass droves, I'm sure there will soon be games that make Tera look like a Walt Disney game!

oh you would be suprised, my

oh you would be suprised, my old guild is over 50% female (and yes i hear that all the time. but we do vent... and better yet have get togthers where you see the actual person) most start with husbands or boyfreinds.. the guys tend to quite long before the girls.. I dont play much with the guild anymore but I am still a member and when a new game comes out they pick a server and name and i tend to join um so i can do some small talk ( and actual game advice and most are pretty hardcore players). We had a huge discussin in the forums on it.. most of the females didnt mind at all that the characters where half naked, they did mind the 12 year olds who wanted to cyber.. it wasnt the look but the people who cant understand its a game and not real. Some did say the satandard.. why does the guy have all the shiny plate and i get a tiny patch of chain..but most said they felt it wa just the way it was and have long got over it.. if thats rght or wrong.. who knows ( wrong in my opinion, they shoudnt have to .. but again, eh, its a game)..

I do wonder about the child-girls- who have full female parts.. but hey, the are the OLDEST RACE IN THE GAME.. that makes it alright doesnt it? no its clearly fan service.. but no matter how you slice it the fans want that.. it sells, they have nothing in the game you dont see on tv at 9pm or later.. And keep in mind this game wa designed ( and released) elsewhere before the USA.. we are simplyt the prudest nation (of the bigger non arab ones)... Standard british tv swears like a salior, has everything but full frontal nudity and jokes about the church nont stop.. in the US.. a glimps of a sdie boob is to much... swearing is to much, and any joke about religion is Taboo.. but gun fights in seasme street are ok.. (exageration).. the game was designed for he rest of the word where a pasty is not going to corrupt you for looking at it.

I do agree i had a bit of tough time with the pedo child race, then i started thinking.. do they look sexy to me? no.. so ... its not a problem.. in fact my Slayer is one.. for the comical huge axe.. I alwmost decided to swap my lancer ot one too.. for the huge shiled and lance and that tiny girl blocking a monster 20X her size.. thouhg there is one thing i wonder.. sombody said the US version was the only one where hty kept short shorts on the Pedo race.. in oythers they got armour pants.. ? no idea if this is true? if it is.. sad to think we have the pedo socity, or at least are believed we do.. Game was made in Korea.

oh.. all those girls in my guild.. girls would not be the correct term for 75% most are my age or older... taht is where i was suprised.. i never figured women older then me would be into games (and they are not.. just MMORPG). I belive its gfor the guild talk, they all seem to like it.

I played again tonight. I did

I played again tonight. I did two instances, and in both of them I was the only male character. Everyone else was a "sexy" character, with boobs/ass prominently on display. One even found a way to make her costume look like pubic hair, so it appeared she were naked!

I agree, Rob, the chances of any actual females playing these toons is...nil!

Sadly, my naive brother insisted that some of them must be actual babes. Y'right!!!

That said, I do know some actual hotties who are "scary" into anime, and let's face it, a lot of that is soft porn as well. I don't even pretend to understand it. For me, porn is porn, games are games...Never the twain shall meet. Guess I'm an old crusty bastard by today's standards.

One big difference is the ridiculous amount of T&A in this. This is a pervert's wet dream in MMO form. I mean, is this a game, or porn?

From what you describe, this "pervert" aspect seems like a severe turn-off for me. I realize that most games with female characters prominently emphasize their sexual aspects, but this game seems disturbing with the bunny-girls. I can only imagine what types of weirdo that would play such a character; I doubt it would be women playing them! And it doesn't make much logical sense, even in a "fantasy" game, for men to be fighting in full armor, but women fighting in negliges!

From what it seems to me, TERA seems like a mess of weird styles, juxtaposing dominatrix-style women with bunny-girls, hardened male warriors with teddy bears. Otherwise, the colorful graphics and giant enemy bosses seem quite cool. Call me a prude, though, but the "pervert" vibe turns me off. And really, there doesn't seem to be much that sets this apart from the dozens of other free-to-play MMO's out there, some of which look much more appealing to me than this one. The "sex" aspect seems like a desperate attempt at attracting attention.

Yeah, there's obviously going

Yeah, there's obviously going to be growing pains as players learn the system (and how to exploit it). I'm not worried about what's best right now as long as I can actually play. I've never been able to get into WOW's endgame stuff and this will probably be the same. I might level up a couple toons and will then be ready to move on to something else most likely. That's particularly going to be the case if the people are jerks.

campfires.. they are at most

campfires.. they are at most Major hubs.. some look like campfires.. some are actually people ( like a guy standing on a box giving soilders orders).. the small heart under you bars will grow big and slowy tick up to 120% or more when near one.. Early in game there is a quest that explains them ( i bet you didnt read :) neither did i the first time).. you can buy campfires or get them as drops so you can put one up anywhere.. Well rested means lots of bonus and it takes maybe 30 seconds to fully reast at any campfire , well worth it..

Zerkers.. known as worst class in game right now.. so i suspect those who stick with um will be rewarded when they buff um at some time.. the WoW cycle.. pallies where so bad in early WoW.. it was arunning joke.. nobody played um but the hardcore.. they buffed um later and all the sudden they where God Like ( still are almost) and soon everybody was one..

Archer- good low game.. you wont like it later.. it doenst scale at all (damge wise) for end game.. and while the devs say thats true. they feel the balance is its out of harms way.. i predict more DPS soon.. but ???

Lancer or warrior are the classes right now.. Lancer cant do DPS.. but man can he sit an eat DPS all day long.. battle of attrition.. liek the Warhammer Battle priests.. fight um for 2 hours and they win.. Warrior, everybody is one.. just best class right now.. changes incomming i think.

I've gotten up to level 16

I've gotten up to level 16 with my archer so far in this game. Been playing with my brother.

I have to say, though, this is one of the worst starts I've ever had in a game, period. My first character was a berserker, and it was an unmitigated disaster. I couldn't even get through the prologue! It starts off with the usual "a 5-year old could do it" difficulty, then pits you against a super demon. This demon kicked my berserker's ass six ways to one. I would resurrect and start hitting him again, but he'd just kill me. I'd get him down to something like 90%, and then he'd reset because it was taking so long to kill him. Apparently, death or combat had made my character "fatigued," crippling his fighting abilities. The interface told me I needed to rest, but I couldn't figure out how. No campfires, no nothing. I even tried running far away, but he followed me! Rez, die, rez, die...I was ready to rage quit. My attacks were literally doing .1% per hit. And, yes, I had my weapons equipped and was using the "super" attacks whenever possible. This was agony!

My brother, however, convinced me to re-roll as something else, since he didn't have any issues getting through with his warrior. So I tried an archer. Not my first pick, but figured it'd be something different. As he said, I rolled through the prologue and the demon this time with no issues.

WTF?

Initial impressions after the disaster:

Very WOW like. That's probably unavoidable, really, but it's really easy to forget that you're not playing WOW, and that's not necessarily a bad thing here. The realms I've explored so far are lovely to look at and the music is good, so it's relatively easy to get immersed.

There are lots of small deviations from The Secret Sauce that are interesting, though I'm not sure if I'll ultimately like them better. For instance, gathering is something anyone can do; you don't need to train for it and can harvest herbs, ores, or energy as you see fit. I think they overdid it a bit, though, because in some zones there is so much ore you could literally just run from node to node all day.

Anyone can also craft anything, though that gets expensive. You need to purchase reagents and designs to make anything, and I just didn't have the money at the start to do much. You can also "extract" metal and herbs from items, though this only worked at the start. After that, it started saying my extraction was too low to work with the items I was collecting, so I guess that's a dud. What, am I supposed to run around the low level areas grinding to get cheap items to raise it? Now that's getting WOW-like in a bad way. ;)

One big difference is the ridiculous amount of T&A in this. This is a pervert's wet dream in MMO form. You literally have "little girl" characters running around in negligees--with bunny ears and tails to boot! Pedophiles delight! Everywhere you look, some babe's boobs or butt is about to pop out of her...hm. "Clothes" seems too much..Cloth? There are times I get very uncomfortable with this game, I'm not gonna lie. I mean, is this a game, or porn?

I'm wondering why they didn't just say "$R@ it" and have full-on nudity and sex. Perhaps that's later in the game?

I saw some women in the general chat complaining about it, but I figure the huge boobs on the box cover give a pretty clear indication of what to expect. If you're not a horny guy, gay, or a lesbian, I can't see ya getting very far into this. I throw in "gay" because some of the male characters are, well, I don't want to be prejudiced, but if that ain't gay, I don't know what is. The only thing I didn't see were "normal" female characters, though I suppose anyone can play one of the animals.

I was most worried that this game would be too anime. I never liked that art style. Thankfully, this is not the case at all. The style here is more realistic than in WOW! Instead of that vaguely cartoony, "super deformed" look, you get mostly realistic graphics comparable to something like Amular. That said, anime rears its ugly head from time to time, with silly stuff like ridiculously oversized weapons and disgustingly "cutesy" critters. Like I said, this kinda nonsense has been minimal so far, but I worry that soon every quest will be given to my a cuddly raccoon.

It's like Game of Thrones...Imagine Ned Stark just got his head chopped off, and there in the crowd is Mickey Mouse and Daffy Duck.

Okay, so maybe it's not that bad, but be warned. ;)

As for combat, I don't notice much difference, at least as an archer. Sure, I'm not hitting tab to target enemies, but otherwise it's the same. I'm actually a bit disappointed I have to be so close with my archer to deal damage. Otherwise, I could hang back and pretend I was playing an FPS. Things get a little more interesting when they get close, but the feeling (to me, at least) is not substantially different than what I'm used to.

Will I keep playing? I don't see quitting anytime soon, at least until the free month is over. I'd like to try some of the different classes, perhaps give a melee class another shot. It sucks that they allowed the prologue to get into an unwinnable state, though; I imagine that's going to turn off a lot of people. "Well, they suck and shouldn't play anyway." Meh, whatever, I never liked that kinda attitude. We're all here to have fun.

The community so far (observed in gen chat) is mostly WOW people. I see endless comparisons there to WOW. AT least for now, people seem to like this better. Some claim "WOW is for 11-14 year olds; Tera is a grown up game." Uhm, I think that's silly. I also saw "Tera actually requires skill; WOW you just stand there." Again, I don't know if this is just wishful thinking or pure ignorance. Granted, I'm only up to level 16 or so, but, if anything, WOW is more complicated, with a lot more clicking and cooldowns and such to manage. Hell, you can even play Tera with a controller, for God's sake.

In short, if I were new to the genre and had the choice between Tera and WOW, I'd go WOW, no question. Unfortunately, I'm so burned out and disgusted with WOW right now that I'm very happy playing something different. Besides that, I (along with lots of others I've talked to) are convinced that the upcoming "Panda" WOW expansion will bring the flood of 11-14 year olds to the game, ruining it for everyone else. So if Tera can be a haven for mature players--really mature, not "hey look at the tits on that one!" "mature"--then I'll be playing for a long time.

I did get a brush of rudeness already from the Tera community though. I noticed that you could deposit money in the banks and wondered--why? Can you draw interest on it? What's the purpose? So I asked in general chat if you could earn interest in the banks. The responses were something like: "lol, nub" and "pffft! idiot." Finally someone said "No." So I asked why the option existed, and the response was "So you can share gold and items with your other characters, durp."

Okay, sure, asshats will abound on any mmo. But this was a really bad introduction to the Tera community! I guess it's typical, though. If you don't like dealing with asshats, just stick to Skyrim. Uh, wait, let me rephrase that. Stick to Grimrock!

It's always the people. No

It's always the people. No need to go into the details, just a punk ass in a pug. It really drives me nuts that I can't punch snots like him right in the face. In reality I can either quit or put up with shits like that. Quitting is more sanitary.

question, was it WoW or the people in WoW? I have a fairly thick skin.. have to I think im right alot of time im not :) so gotta be able to smile when im corrected. But even i get disgusted with how inconsiderate people are.. its a game and when things dont go right they can get to be an ulgy mess.. I have had enough instance runs that are so utter vile to average or poor players I cant imagin they are even human.. and it really ruins the game for me..
