The List - http://duke.a-13.net/

Updated by Eli Hodapp - June, 2006

"The List" originally started as a forum or usenet post somewhere and quickly spread around the internet in early 2002 to poke fun at George Broussard and the rest of 3D Realms. At the time Duke Nukem forever had been in development for five years. Well, nine years have passed since the original press release, dated April 25th, 1997- so I decided the list needed updating. Also, I realize that some of the games listed aren't released yet, they will be before Duke Nukem Forever.

If you've got something to add, email duke@a-13.net or hit me up on AIM @ "ioburn" or Y!IM @ "io_burn".

Feel free to re-post this, just please keep the whole thing intact with all of the credits at the bottom or link back to here.

Is what supposed to be some sort of joke? The Atari 2600 game and video were a joke, though it's a working "demo" ROM nevertheless. Old stuff, there.

mikegupta: What are you not amused at??? The fact that DN hasn't been released or the factoids in the blurb about DN? I thought it was pretty entertaining but wondered while I was reading it if the information was accurate or not. 19 wars...I tried to figure them out, but couldn't get past 7 or 8. That's alot of info for some people that don't seem to have alot of time on their hands.

I recently played through S Sam II

I recently played through S Sam II (steam sale, dang them!) and the very begining is a little jab at Duke, when you start the game if you swim across the water you fall in in the back corner is a red phone booth, if you go to it the main guy in SS askes "where is he" and he means DUKE, he says somthing about him being late or some other dig.. Its not to funny, but a neat little touch (and praise form another FPS maker for Duke). I watched the trailer for it and sadly its almost like it was made for 12 year olds.. they kinda stressed the Stripper part of Duke (which was such a small part of the original) I know its all about aliens taking earths women.. but last I checked not many of the entire population was strippers.. I guess its back to that Sex sells thing.. I did find it funny they pixeled the Giant mobs man boobs, or boobs.. The gameplay looks pretty fun, to bad they didnt show a bit more of it instead of all the pixelated stuff. And is it just me or does Dukes voice sound wrong? Is it the same guy, I thought I had heard it was.. maybe just age has changed it?

And to add to the list, I think i have went through 3 bad GF's and 2 good ones, at least 7-10 cars, I have moved 2X, I have bought and sold 2 houses, I have doubled ... err almost tripled my salary. I have moved from a land line to a call phone, and to a cell phone that can play Duke. My tv is almost 3X bigger... etc...

I can definitely relate. :-) We were mere young 'uns when Duke Nukem 3D came out, and the juvenile humor and mindless action were probably more age-appropriate back then. Yet Duke Nukem 3D was one of my all-time favorite games, and I find myself rooting heavily for Duke's successful comeback.

We talk a lot here about advancing the technology, improving interfaces, and adding more innovation into games to make them more fun, but in this case, the character of Duke himself was the major part of the fun! His constant humorous quips kept the player's interest.

As an old fogey now, I find myself wondering if the new Duke will cross some boundaries of taste that I'm not particularly comfortable with nowadays. The new Duke trailer looked promising, but it also made the game seem much "skankier" than the original one was. The "meathead macho" humor of the original still seems to be there, but I hope it's not just a bunch of gross-out jokes now. I still want there to be a game thrown in there somewhere.
