Matt Chat 133: Gothic Time

Matt Barton's picture

It's Gothic time! Yes, finally, after countless requests, Matt Chat covers the 2001 German CRPG Gothic. Of course, this game launched a trilogy, and apparently Risen is keeping the lineage alive. Lots of fun stuff in this game, and some pioneering stuff like the ability to skin animals (you can even get their teeth and claws!), cook food (grilled chicken!), and much more. Plagued by one of the slowest starts in any CRPG, though, it hasn't attracted the attention that it really deserves. If you can get through the first 3-4 hours of it, you'll be hooked. Just don't blow all your ore at the swamp weed stand!

Not Funny and Lame

This video was lame, not funny, uninformative, and just plain bad, Matt. You take an epic game like Gothic, which you obviously do not have the intelligence to understand, and make childish, stupid jokes that make you look like a real wannabe loser. The interviews you do are generaly worth watching when you don't try to be funny, but the retrospectives are getting worse with each one. Even the interviews lately have been downhill with people who are minor characters and havent worked on anything worth a darn. Terminator 3? Who cares about that?

I am letting you know that I am canceling my subscription to your channel. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I agree!!!!

Yes. You also failed to mention how racist and homophobic this review obviously was.
Just kidding. The review was fine. Looks like one of Matt's students is trying to get revenge for a crappy grade!

My apologies

I'm sorry that you didn't care for the episode, Terabyte. It may not look like it, but I do put as much time into them as I can given the weekly release schedule.

You're not alone in criticizing the humor, which is of course always subjective. What I and a few others might find hilarious, others just roll their eyes and think is incredibly corny.

In any case, as I told another of my recent critics, there's no reason to waste time on ANY show that you don't enjoy on YouTube. There are BILLIONS of videos there, and who knows how many folks reviewing games much better than I could hope to match.

In short, you COULD spend five minutes writing a message about how you much you hate my show, OR you could spend that time browsing other shows and find something you like better. I know which one sounds like a more productive use of time to me. :)

Humorous reviews

First of all, someone criticizing the people being interviewed is ridiculous. I thought the Mark Soderwall interviews were so good that I "favorited" them when they came out! I loved every second of them! If Shigeru Miyamoto could be reached for an interview, I'm sure Matt would do it!

On the subject of humor, I'm quite enjoying the humorous style of the game retrospectives. It works, it's often funny as hell, and it keeps me watching the whole way through. Winning formula.

On the other hand, I can kind of see where someone might not enjoy the "MST3K" style of humor if it's their all-time favorite game being featured! If it's a game you're passionate about, you have fond memories of, and you brag about to all your friends, the "Matt Chat" style of humor might come across as not taking the game seriously, or even be seen as mocking the game!

I had reached a point where I thought that "Matt Chat" couldn't be improved, but maybe you (Matt) should add a prologue or epilogue summarizing the game's strong points and why someone should consider playing it. You're doing that already during the course of the video (between jokes), but maybe a more emphasized summary would appease the game's faithful a bit.

Don't lose the humor! It works! Really, there's not much, if anything, to fix, and even my suggestion is a minor one. You've got a winning formula here.

About the "Beer of the Week," definitely keep it. I admit I get a little uneasy, since I no longer drink alcohol, but it is very entertaining to watch, and it adds a personal touch to the videos that I think connects with the fans.

Or how about "Cheese of the Week?" "Pez Dispenser of the Week?" Yeah, let's stick with beer.... :-)

Did you hear Matts podcasts?, these are imho deeper than youtube movies.

If i did such video, i would try just underline orginal atmosphere of game (non patheticaly) which is very difficult, i know. I'd more game speaks for itself and I would try to adapt to game, blend in with the game. To be more actor, writer, this humor seems to be just bruteforce solution, good maybe for game like Rockstar ate my hampster etc.

Personally I'd rather see reviews the old things, which, I don't know, i already done Gothic 9 year ago, know more about history of game (very small team), there wasnt any new info. So if is content (game / ideas - here are Matt gualities) good, i dont mind "funny storytelling."
Im glad that Dungeons and Desktop wasnt such funny book, interviews are also ok, podcast is on half way, still too much irony, i wanna more arguments instead.

Who: Brujah Zealot, the pimp of babylons bitch. / Location: Scorched heart of Europe. // Sorry for my moldavian sort of english, i have 2 possibilities, to be silent or try to say something +look like idiot..

Honestly, I stopped the video

Honestly, I stopped the video at 3:52, because I simply couldn't bear the comments anymore. They sound like some 12 year old trying to be funny. They are not insightful or anything, just, excuse me, lame.

Humor

Humor is subjective. As such it cannot actually be lame, it can only be perceived as such. In this case you perceived it in such a way, but that only pertains to you. Many of us enjoy this style of MST3K humor. I, for one, would be much happier to see you leave the ranks of Matt Chat subscribers than to see Matt change the way he does his retrospectives to conform to another person's subjective views related to humor.

I'm a long time fine of

I'm a long time fine of Gothic and I really enjoyed this Chat! Your comments on not being able to stomp meatbugs and such was spot on, amusing yet informative.

Oh and yes, later in the game you get teleport stones that take you to several places around the map. :-)

Daniel.

Although the first review was

Although the first review was a bit out of bounds when it comes to the quality of the interviews, I think I have to share the opinion on the retrospective. I think the bad jokes take away from what you're trying to do with Matt Chat, and it seriously undermines any effort you put in.

The interviews on the other hand are pure gold, and I can't wait to see the next one. I think approaching the retrospective like a game review, going over parts you liked and didn't lie, would be a far better approach.

I'm trying to make my comments as positive as I can and provide constructive criticism. On the other hand, I can't help to wonder if this is why your YouTube channel views have dropped significantly....

Overall, please think about what's been said, make the necessary tweaks if you so desire, and please keep doing what you are doing. Remember, even great plays are changed from performance to performance. :)

The humor is what makes these

The humor is what makes these things fun for me. That's important, because only a few good people bother to donate, and I'm well past the point where I'm willing to do so much work or nothing. If I can't have some fun doing these, it's not worth it to me and the show will be cancelled.
