In this video I am trying to play Sega Ages Vol 1. on the Saturn and talk a bit about the game, life the universe and everything on the side. Again experimenting with various video setups to see what works and what doesn't.
This disc is a must-have for Saturn gamers, especially if you want Arcade Perfect ports of Outrun, Space Harrier and After Burner II on a home console.
This is a great collection and it seems a better deal than the Japanese equivalent - the 3 games were released separately there.
However I have read that the PAL version wasn't coded properly for the 50Hz frame rate and the timer in Outrun counts down too quickly making it harder than it should be. Of course we get borders too.
It seems to play OK when booted up on a Japanese console using an AR cartridge though (borders gone too) but I don't know if that corrects the timer problem or not....if it hasn't been PAL optimised in any way then it will run correctly at 60Hz.
The Japanese releases got extra remixed soundtracks too and the Outrun disc has a 60FPS mode (the arcade game runs ay 30FPS) but by all accounts the smoothness of this mode takes a bit of the feeling of speed away...
Was never a big fan of Afterburner but I love Space Harrier and Outrun.
You are right, on my PAL console the timer does run down rather quickly making the game a little too tough on PAL mode. I played this on a friend's JAP Saturn with the AR cart and on that machine the game is more playable. Quite a lazy programming/conversion job they did. But still a good disc to own. The music on it is quite different from the separately released games in Japan.
I am with you on Space Harrier and Outrun, prefer those over Afterburner - I like that game but never got a real sense of being in control in that game.
