Number 8Number 8Do you have ideas for Armchair Arcade's new logo? Do you know someone who would like to design a logo for us to look at? What follows are some very rough ideas of our own. It would be great if we could all work together to see what we like and dislike about various concepts and ideas. As we get closer to issue 8 and our first print issue, it's important we finalize a really clever logo design. The only requirement is that like the current placeholder logo, it has "Armchair" on top and "Arcade" on the bottom, and we're allowed to use it for any purpose without restriction. Bonus points for "Videogames and Computers" under the logo. Of course it needs to be a high resolution original file, preferably vector, or something we could recreate ourselves if it's not. Bonus points from me if it can somehow relay that we're about both Videogames AND Computers, and bonus, bonus points tying together classic, modern and future. If videogame-like characters could somehow interact with the Logo, even better, though they'd have to be original for us to use them. While we can't give anything away at this time, we'll give full credit for full usage rights and maybe something like a signed copy of our first print issue. Thanks!

I was able to vote

Bill,
When I came to the site earlier today, I was able to see the pole and I voted. Are the votes recorded with userid's? Can you tell if you got my vote?

I can't see the poll logged

I can't see the poll logged in as a regular user now. I don't know how/when you saw it. Aargh! In any case, so far I have one registered vote for 8 and one for 12.

Voting Results - Two Finalists for Round 1

I think it's clear that 12 and 13 are the favorites for this first round. My thoughts follow on both under the image.

Here is 12 (Dragon57):

Bill (in regards to 12): I love the font, logo and videogames and computers part. I love the concept of the whole past, present and future thing, but don't think that it ultimately works. So the top half of the image is a keeper. If possible, I'd like to see some reworkings of this, but the top half is what I'd be comfortable going with at this point if it were to ultimately win.

Here is 13 (Mike Gupta):

Bill (in regards to 13): I also love the font and logo for "Armchair Arcade". I need to see "Arcade" though with a capital "A". Stylistically it's probably better lowercase, but the official name is not lowercase, so please try to make it work with a capital letter. I like the "Videogames and Computers" part, but some of the letters on that font, like the "V", are a bit odd. Please find a similar, but different font with more "pleasant" letters. Conceptually, the middle is fine, but the implementation doesn't work. I too would like to see this with just the "Armchair Arcade" and "Videogames and Computers" parts. I'd also like to see some additional reworkings, but perhaps with the three image segment below everything else.

Everyone else, please comment and/or submit an entry for round 2, which I hope is the final round. Also remember that any entry that we select is REQUIRED to have a vector source file, so please keep that in mind. We will generate all other versions from that source file. Thanks!!!

Background Color

Congratulations, guys!!

Both of these designs have a white background, so implementing them would require a pretty drastic reworking of the top banner. Do we want a white background on the top bar? If so, we'll need to think about altering the css a good bit. The top of Mike's design would probably work well with the black, but the black shadow on Dragon's would be invisible against the black.

I'm also thinking that we could cut the bottom parts out of both and place them where the x-arcade buttons are now. Thoughts?

I'm not sure what to think about the need for Mike to capitalize the second a in arcade. Stylistically, it does seem to work well. But, I know what you mean--if we emphasize the Armchair part too much, people might think we're a furniture site! :-)

More Logo Feedback

I think with subtle changes, we could make either logo work with any color background. For the short-term I'm thinking a version for white and a version for black. It won't be a big deal.

Conceptually, I like the bottom parts of both, it's just finding the right implementation for that stuff. I think the main focus has to be on the logo itself, then we can worry about the extra bits. The good thing is that both are fairly distinctive and would be radical shifts for us, which is what we need for a true re-launch.

I'm curious to see what other's suggestions are and what both Dragon and Mike further come up with in regards to revisions...

Damn, how true.

One thing you guys and gals might think about is which logo you'd rather wear on a t-shirt (or polo). If the answer is "neither," we got more work to do. If you feel strongly about one or the other, let's work extra hard to make it perfect. A great logo would definitely make the site more memorable and give us all that extra moxie to really take things to the next level.

Format and colors

Just curious, what vector format would you ultimately go with? I want to make sure I can give you the file type you would need, if I need to.

Also, I can change colors quite easily. What would you like to see for the top section instead of the black and/or yellow? As for the white background, that is easily changed as well. You of course have to make sure you write out a file format with transparency defined once you get something finalized so as to not conflict with your css definitions.
