slog-a-thonslog-a-thonWith the holidays coming up soon and everyone (hopefully) having at least a few days off, I thought it might be fun to start planning a "Slog-a-thon." What I mean is a day or two when anyone interested can dedicate at least six hours to playing a classic CRPG he or she has never played before. Afterward, we meet back up here to post our slogs, which amount to a paragraph or two about our experience playing the game. What did you like, what gave you trouble, how well does the game stand up today, etc. Remember, a slog is not so much about the game itself; it's more about YOUR personal experience with it.

I'm thinking we could do this on Dec. 26th for maximum convenience, but let me know what would work best for you. I'm not really concerned about a particular TIME you do your slog, but it would be nice to have us all doing it on the same day.

So, if you're up for it, choose a game and mention it in the comments below. I'd like to have us all doing different games for maximum variety. Any platform or era is fine, though you'll definitely get brownie points if you choose a particularly esoteric game and platform.

Nice idea. I'm considering it.

A couple of games I'm considering purchasing from GoG might tie in with your "Slog-a-thon."

Ultima 7 - It's by all accounts one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) CRPG's ever. I would have bought this already based on your Matt Chat episode about it, but trying Ultima 4 not too long ago scared me away. Ultima 4 was so obscure and hardcore that I was lost from the beginning. How much more obscure would Ultima 7 be?!?!

King's Bounty: The Legend - Probably not old enough to be considered "classic," but it looks approachable, attractive, and it has turn-based battles. It's in my purchase cart, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Planescape:Torment - another of the greats, but I haven't had much inkling to try it, since it seems like a variation of Baldur's Gate or Fallout. I'm looking for something a bit different.

Icewind Dale - Forget what I just said about Planescape, since this one is based on the BG engine. But it's apparently more linear and consists primarily of straight-up battles. Sounds like fun, and perhaps easy to get into right off the bat.

Outcast - this is an obscure sci-fi action CRPG that's quite out of the ordinary. It features a voxel-based graphics engine that is quite unique, and by most accounts is a pretty good game all-around. I've had my eye on this one too, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Those are one's I'm considering. By the way, I haven't purchased any of these games, so is there any chance for a "Matt Chat" code for these games so you'll get a piece of the pie, Matt?

Thanks, Rob. As far as I

Thanks, Rob. As far as I know, this link will work:
http://www.gog.com/en/catalogue/pp/12f0de3dc76e067d21ed85125716e02e9f1e69f0

The affiliate part:
/pp/12f0de3dc76e067d21ed85125716e02e9f1e69f0

As I understand it, that's it...The /pp/ part will register on the site and stay in the cache regardless of whether it shows up after that.

I used this to buy two games yesterday: King's Bounty and Ultima 7. There's no way to tell, from my end, if it took, because the URL on the purchase page doesn't show the code. Unless something internal to the server registers the purchase, there doesn't appear to be a way to know if you're getting screwed or not.

Anyhow, you should promote the general Matt Chat affiliate link in all your episodes! Considering the low cost of the games, your cut would probably not amount to much beyond pocket change, but heck, you earned it. Might as well get paid.

There's a lot of fine print in the contract. Frankly, I don't quite understand how it works, but I do get paid by them--usually something like fifteen bucks per month.

As far as I can tell from reading the contract, the kickback only counts if you're new to GOG and don't have an account there already. However, I can't be sure it's not giving me something if folks like you click the links...In any case, it's supposed to store a cookie that automatically credits me.

If I didn't trust these guys, I'd sure as hell be skeptical of the way they have this set up. It'd make a lot more sense to me to have a code you type in somewhere, and it'd be even nicer if they'd give that code a discount on select items. I tried bringing this up to them but it was absolutely rejected out of hand.

No extensive gameplay periods this holiday season

I ham slammed with nightshifts this holiday season. Today a 32 hrs one starts. Wednesday after Christmas a 56 one (daft planner) and new year's day so only Christmas is a little safe here. Ah well next year hopefully will be better. It is not the end of the world.

Happy holidays people!

Happy holidays people!

Christina and I will be finishing up work on our My Xbox book by this Friday, and, outside of working more on the in-progress Armchair Arcade "secret" project and visiting with family and what-not, there is an outside chance I'll have some time, at least on Monday, to attempt this. No promises, as always, though, but at least there's some hope...

My main videogame gift this year will be the Rocksmith bundle, so that will certainly be keeping me busy as well. I wanted the Xbox 360 version, but that's sold out everywhere, so I was given the PS3 version, which probably makes more sense anyway as it's always good to give some of the other systems on the shelf some love.

Happy holidays!

I am going to be playing the CRPG "Legends" for the TI-99/4A, if I can find a way to get it transferred onto a disk.

You can read about it here (middle of the page):

I have both of those games, which were scaled back TI-99/4a clones of Phantasie I and II, my favorite RPG series ever. You can find new originals of "Legends" and "Legends II" on eBay for cheap: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=legend+ti-99%2F4a&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=

Wow, Jake, I think you'll

Wow, Jake, I think you'll take the prize for obscure!

You should probably let us set you up account so you can be official here at Armchair Arcade. Send your preferred username to matt@armchairarcade.com and I'll set it up for you. That also goes for any lurkers who want to be part of the slog!

I think I'll go with Eye of the Beholder. It's been on my list FOREVER, so now is as good as time as any to slog that baby.
