The Ultimate Paper AirplaneThe Ultimate Paper AirplaneI just saw this site on Digg and thought I'd share it with my friends here at AA. I don't know about you, but I spent an inordinate amount of time as a kid building paper airplanes, always trying to find the right combination of folds, cuts, and creases to make the ultimate paper craft. How about you? However, my finest models didn't look anything like this masterpiece. The site takes you through each step of making your own "DC-3," including instructions on how to fly it once it's complete. There's even a Google Video to help you visualize it. I hope someone here will build this plane and consider filming it for You Tube! (hint hint!)

Our Airplane

Elizabeth was able to make our plane in a little under 5 minutes. We've flown it a bit in the apartment, but we obviously need more room. The neat thing about it is that it doesn't nose dive, but rather glides in and out of one to attain maximum distance. I can't wait to get this thing outside to give it a real test.

I remember this from the various magazines of the day: www.atarimagazines.com/compute/issue70/122_5_News_Products_Paper_Airplan...

Of course the Mac version was the best at the time...

Built Mine

Well, I built the plane and now have to wait for the morning to fly it. Interesting way the tail fits into the wings so no need for glue or tape.

I tried flying it in the house and all it would do is barrel rolls, hahahahaha.

Flight Test

I made the initial flight test after building one out of plain 8.5 x 11 inch copy paper. After I figured out "how" to fly it, it pretty much flew out about 10 meters straight, did a full 10 meter loop, straight for another 15-20 meters and then angled right and came back to me. I duplicated this about 6 times to the amazement of our 4-yr old. The seventh time I got the plane stuck about 15 meters up a tree, where it still sits now.

Made a second plane out of 12 x 18 inch construction paper which resulted in a heavier plane, obviously.

The second flight test resulted in different results. This plane flew twice as far as the original and almost like a funnel would fly up to about 25 meters and then slowly cirle back down.

It "is" the best paper airplane I've ever made. Don't remember having instructions like this when I was in school!!!!

Now I need a bigger field to fly it because it's flying outside the parameters of my yard now!!

One thing is for certain...a slight breeze will skew the results dramatically and to the extremes distance wish, so be prepared to lose alot of the planes. My second one did end up in a tree just like the first.

The third will have to be flown in my parents yard which is an acre square void of trees!

Cheers

Wow, congratulations on your

Wow, congratulations on your excellent aviation skills! :-)

I think these planes fly even better than those big styrofoam ones you can buy from most big stores. Some friends and I did get a book on paper airplanes when we were kids and try to make them, but none of them were as cool as the one on that website. Most of them involved gluing and scissors as well, and they didn't fly half as well.
