It's like, how much more black could this be?It's like, how much more black could this be?I'm so angry about Skyrim that it was hard to make this podcast, but I did it anyway. I shouldn't have to say this, but if you are in love with Skyrim, this podcast isn't for you. This episode is intended only for complete morons, dolts, dullards, and out-and-out nincompoops like yours truly who are just too jaded and bitter to ever enjoy a truly fantastic masterpiece like Skyrim from the glorious design wizards at Bethesda.

Warning: There is some mild adult language here (PG rated).

Considering the obscurity of the post and the site in general, these folks must be diligently searching the net for precisely these kind of negative views about their game--just to get themselves riled up I suppose.

I think you undersell AA and yourslef Matt, as I found this site through Matts chat (or was it the Video game book? I forget) .. and must admit I came, glanced and left.. with the net there are just an Impossible amount of good (and unfortanlty bad) sites to dedicate ones time to, it really has to jump out sometimes to keep one interested.. but more matts chats, and the fact when googling info on games and such i noticed AA come up from time to time i took a second look.. and stuck around and enjoyed most every post since. I would guess with Skyrim, there is a little more interest (both good and bad) then the average game so lots of googling going on.. and you pointed out alot of the Flaws the game has.. so as even soembody who likes the game, i can agree with many of your points and have actually googled some (to try and tweek or resolve some isues). The crashing was hampreing my game enjoyment quit a bit ... I'm still quite frustrated as I mentioned first week or so I had almost no crashes, the second week it crashed almost hourly.. I took a break for about a week from it till last night.. and 4 hours last night no crashs.. its almost like the longer i play it the worse it is..

but.. no i think its hard for some people to understand that all is not perfect even if they like something. I had a mild case of this going when you posted this.. thankfully age (and lazyness) kept me from posting like a fanboy :) sorta.. hehe i still had to feel good by posting some sales numbers.. not really any proof a game is good (again even Duke3D sold pretty well and i think we all agree that was a pretty average ) heck millions bought pet rocks in the 70's and we still all buy tap water for $1 a bottle that has been shown to be no better then most water we get from our tap.

I'm curious where they're

I'm curious where they're coming from. I've Google it and tracked it, but as far as I can tell nobody has mentioned it anywhere.

may want to read the whole thread this video was posted a few pages back.

Skyrim has game of the year in 3 sites/mags so far (and there are only 3 that have declared a game of the year so far as far as I can see.. that are "name brand sites") Going agains Portal 2, Batman AC, Dues Ex, and Uncharted 3. Keep in mind this is People voting not the magazines/sites staff. Its been top vote by a wide margin so far.. winning the top spot by an average of 65% of all people voting it top spot.. suprisingly Uncharted is getting the 2nd most votes (that kinda shocks me.. not that it isnt a great game.. but is and exclusive.. all the other games are on all sytems). Personally I might go with Uncharted myslef "some of the best writing and story telling in a game ever" I AGREE! i was amazingly dispointed when i finished it..... not in the game, but the fact i was done playing and ther was no more.

or is Matt sjut having fun posting as annon? mart Batton? :)

I agree..Skyrim is overrated

Just wanted to say I agree with most your criticisms about the game. Honestly we are the very few who see problems in the game among mass hordes of people who love it. Seeing ratings of 10 and 9.5s from almost all sources on the net just astounds me when there are so many issues with the game. I'm not even sure how to write up a criticism of the game due to how differently others seem to experience it. Like you (Matt burton) I find many of the repitive features of the game dull and boring, yet others will spend 100 hours plus on them. Thats why its hard to criticize the game, most people dont understand any points we make.

I gave Skyrim a pretty fair trail and have probably logged at least 30 hours. I tried to have fun with it. The thing is, no matter what I did nothing was rewarding in the game. i completed the entire civil war thing, and what did I get? A sword just as good as the one I already had. Throughout the game quests have rewarded me with items that are usually useless and/or level with the things I already have. This is surprising and annoying for a game with quests that bore your eyes out and make you want to fast forward. After ten quests it had me asking, "why am I doing this? I don't even get rewards for it." amd the only reason I have is to progress in the game, but nothing enticed me to progress. The game just feels like a chore in this way.

The boring, repotive quests amd bad rewar system is just a portion of annoyances I had. The combat is porbably the most major- its basically the combat of a freaking mmorpg. The game is inconsistent here bevause it tries so hard to be, as Matt said, irratatingly realistic yet is compelety fake and robotic in its combat. The creatures and people you fight have such close animations its ridiculous. And they all act like magnets and you're the recepter. As soon as they see you, no matter what or who they are, they'll run at you like they have no choice. You're the dragonborne for christs sake and a bandit wants to kill you? There's no gray area in this game. Its all black and white. This creature wnats to kill you and this one doesnt.

I could go on but frankly 90% of the game as a whole sucks, so it would take me forever to express it all. Anyway I'm glad the original poster put out his frustration for this game. Any game no matter how well recepted by the current generation should be criticized.

Yes, Skyrim is dull and

Yes, Skyrim is dull and excruciating. But so is this podcast. Man, listen to this bullshit podcast was painful. I mean, half of the time i was like "what's your point?" Moog synth? Really? Wtf. I have no idea who you are, Matt, but it must suck to earn a living that way. You're obnoxious and as much as Bethesda couldn't make a good game, a REAL game even, YOU can't do reviews or criticism.

I have a questin for you Matt.. a post like this is sure to get both sides of the coin.. venom and honey.. and you have spoke about critics before.. Now in a case like this I wonder does it effect you at all? I'm not sure what to think of this person, he didnt like the game and used the same old standards 'i t sucked, its boring, its dull" but never whent into anything but the generic terms for bad.. HE did point out Moog Syth so he must have listened. and he does point his lack of knowing anything about you "but it must suck to earn a living that way" podcasts? anybody make a living doing that? his lack of pointing out his problems with it and why he feels that way and just doing the standard rants.. can stuff like that bother you? its like the kid across the street saying 'you suck" and not knowing why.. I must admit im kinda thik skinned..and with my wierd taste in moveis/music/life, not to mention my spelling in a net police world, i need to be..but I dont put myslef out for people to hack on.. I know some of it does bug you, but in a case where its just like a kids fight " i know you are but what am I".. no real reasons pointed out (and.. for everybody sake I hope this post doesnt rile up a huge list , if it was worth the time to "hate" on you, it should have been worth the time to reason on why when it was originaly done, not after the case) can it still bug you?

I have made it clear i dont agree with you feelings on Skyrim.. and have not listend to the cast..not becuase I think it will make me angry or anything.. its just differnt opinions to me.. and while i dont agree, i cant see any reason to get all worked up about it. And no need to respond if its not somthing you want to do.. this really inst the correct way to aks a question like this.. in a thread and in the open.. but as this thread mixed several opionons i was just wondering..

I used to be an adv... ah, the hell with it!

Wow, Lots and LOTS of comments on this one! Unfortunately I couldn't read through all of it yet, but want to comment on the podcast anyway.
So a few weeks ago Bethesda mastermind Todd Howard showed clips what their talented staff was capable to integrate in to Skyrim in one week. One. Week. Among others they put mounted combat in to it. Which made me figuratively flip my table. Matt was right all along. The lack of meaningful and necessary features was thanks to shoddy design. But why? I must ask. Why? I consider myself a casual CRPG player, but even I don't think that Skyrim is an RPG. It's an melee combat focused first person action game set in a Norwegian valley with insane asylum escapees.
One would think a game called The Elder frockin' Scrolls would be an RPG? I guess no. I had fun with in the 4 hours I played it but for all the wrong reasons. Theres a bunch of "shoestring budget" games I enjoy for similarity hilarious reasons. PC version Crusaders of Might and Magic comes to mind.
After all the nasty things what I said I hope one day Matt will be able to chat with Todd Howard about Redguard or something.

EDIT: Sorry for the 3 re-posts. Please delete the duplicates, if possible.

I think there has to come a

I think there has to come a time when a developer has to quit adding and release. And while they say they added mounted combat in a week, I think there is a bigger picture here, adding hte mounted combat was easy (modders have done it in less then a week for the other elder scroll games, and they dont have the skil the actual people programming it do (one would think)), balanceing it for game I bet is not included in that. testing to see how it can be exploited etc.. In skyrim for one thing the dragons are not (AI) ready for fast moving targets, and part of attacking and defeating them is based on standing/running humonid targets, not mounted ones. beth has one of the best MOD engins of any game, the game can be made dang near into anything if you want to spend the time. That is one part of the game that people never see when buying it.. its has almost unlimited replaybility with MODS..

just a cool side note from the BIASED SKYRIM lover in the room.. Since it came out its been #1 to #5 on steam overall sales weekly.. its been #1 even after its major compatition came out (Amalur).. the only time it hasnt been number one was for major releases or Uber sales, after the sales it returns to number one again (it was #1 for 5 weeks straight when it was released).. 3 weeks after Amalar was released Skyrim beat it in sales (on steam) again.. last week it was #1 still.. Suprising sales for such a bad game :) of course as a Wii cynic.. sales dont mean anything really..

one thing i did notice after playing both.. Skyrim/Amalur its hard to get a perfect blend.. I dislike the 'loose" combat of Skyrim (unless you play caster or archer) and dislike the consolized simplified 2 button combat of Amalur ( tap one button-dodge till you can strike).. and.. even worse.. 2 games similer in such a short period.. im burned out on both.. after my mage finished Amalur.. i couldnt bring myslef to grind a stealth character..Burnout.. and not as i feel either game is bad.. just too much of two good things.. time for some mindless fun for awhile... SSam III (never finished it yet) and Saints Row the Third ( on sale this weekend on STEAM) some silly mindless fun .. then back to thinking games again, sayin a month or so? Grimrock is in april.. and I'm smoking through that one!!!!!
