Minecraft is really LEGO's in

Minecraft is really LEGO's in a crude way. Whre it may get confusing is there are 2 play modes.
Creativity: you are in "no clip" type of mode (if you have played FPS, basicly you can move anywhere, fly so to speak) you have unlimited blocks and access to all blocks, so you can build anything with the resources at hand. No enemeis, nothing but pure creativity, a sandbox.

Adventure: You start with nothing, and have to build everything. make your own shovels, pick axes, axes, etc.. as night falls the bad guys come out ( the game uses the light engine as a spawn machine. NO LIGHT= MORE MONSTERS) if you have your gamma set correct the monsters will see you long before you see them unless you have treeless of ocean background. In adventure mode you have to build stuff with bricks you made. You have to harvest everything. You have a health bar that goes down if attacked till you die (and game over i believe, I have yet to die since it was released (new adventure mode)). You have to make all your bricks so to speak, you can create al the same stuff, but its much harder.

Minecraft is one of those games you "get" or you dont.. not much middle ground. I look at it like most RTS.. i have to build from start and make some infrastrutor to build out farther.. But no win ever, the world will keep gnerating if you keep moving. Right now Adventure mode is a bit to easy, most enemies are fairly easy to defeat with crap weapons.. Skellies being hte exception as they can shot arrows (which have a push back effect) so you cant charge them even. They do shoot slow enough to duck and weave so to speak.. and Creepers.. actually very easy to kill.. but they may be the single most eveil enemy in a game ever.. They blend in very well in treed areas.. they make no noise (most other mobs do) so you wont hear them.. you will be working away and hear "HIISSS" by that time its to late.. Creepers when they touch you explode.. so when you are putting hte finishing touchs on your materpiece.. BOOM :)

I want more enemies, the NPC cities would be nice (in game last i heard) but I havent seen one.

and here Minecraft FROGGER

Minecraft Multiplayer Limits?

Although I haven't played it, I think I'm finally starting to understand what Minecraft is all about. It seems that, in essence, it's a "build-something-while-under-attack" kind of game. Which seems quite intriguing, actually, but then you throw in the "creative" LEGO mode and that image goes out the window. I'm still kind of puzzled. :-)

Is there a limit to how many players can be on one Minecraft server? I can envision a somewhat-massively-multiplayer Minecraft experience (in adventure mode) being quite thrilling, with evolving cities and economies, conquering territory from monsters, and even competition and combat between player factions on one server! Now that would be something!

hehe no worries, Like i say I

hehe no worries, Like i say I dont get it (me) but many people love it, and I do totally understand the urge to create. Matt oyu are just out of the loop, minecraft is Quite huge, tons of mods (texture packs etc..)for it as Notch (creator) is not to close minded about his creation. As mark said there are peope making games in a game... Poeple have made adventure games, challange maps, Puzzle maps, etc... Even programs you can put stuff in and it will build the object in the game ( the enterprise (star trek) guy who buildyt a one to one version was fond to be a program that id it.. impressive non the less)

Adventuer mode is still pretty tame, but its getting better and better, some the annoying parts are getting less annoing ( the change to arrows was excellent). Right now my big gripe is teh day night cycle.. Night is just to long (i know.. its not, but I hate it, i feel so limited..)

Free mode - mostly

Some of us have 'Survival-ed' extensively in single player mode. I would love to go 'Adventure' once that is properly implemented. Some people have been creating maps / worlds for groups of people to explore and find trophies - making it into an adventure.

Going Survival with a bunch of people together would be cool too at some point.
But for now it is mostly LEGO-ING for grownups Sorry ;)

Well get started!

With future versions Magic and RPG elements are introduced so that will be totally your thing I guess. It won't be WOW though :)

Private... - basically friends only

It is a private server and we are basically playing it in 'Creative mode' for now. Just using it to LEGO together nice things and chat at the same time. We do plan on going Survival/Adventuring when these modes have been properly implemented. This could be an awesome platform to go realtime D&D-ing in.

If you like I could introduce you to the server-admin SynthMonkey and he'll give you the details on how to hop on. Most of us are from the UK or the Netherlands with one timezone difference. When I am pulling a nightshift / on-call I am often found within the realm. So let me know if you are up to some LEGO-ing in MC! LOL

you guys in free mode or

you guys in free mode or Adventure? Im a huge addict of Minecraft but I must admit I dont get the Freemode. I guess I got over legos when I was younger, but I do understand the creativity part, i love to create. I do love the adventuer part, trying to build and live with the baddies. Your map is pretty impressive though.
