Decided to change out my main computer

I decided that enough was enough with my main HP TouchSmart home computer in terms of performance (as in, it wasn't satisfactory anymore, plus it's filled with bloatware (like iTunes and Raptr) that I really don't want to take off). While ideally I would have plunked down a few grand on a multi-monitor iBuyPower gaming-tuned desktop, that will have to wait for Windows 8 before I am ready (and able) to make that kind of investment.

In the mean-time, I decided that I'm not utilizing the most powerful computer in the house as well as I could be, and that's my Sager gaming laptop. So I'm going to clear off everything on my desk and put that sucker on it. I already have a Cyborg RAT 5 gaming mouse and Razer mouse pad, so I just needed a good gaming/typing keyboard (I like my current Logitech Wave, but as we discussed in another thread, I'm a sucker for mechanical switches). I decided upon a mechanical keyboard from Razer: http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/DisplayCategoryProductLi... (I got the Dragon Age II-branded version for "cheap" on Amazon). Unfortunately, my laptop's nVidia GeForce GTX 460M only supports two, not three displays, so I decided on a single extra monitor for a dual display setup: http://www.ecost.com/p/ViewSonic-Monitors/product~dpno~8226240~pdp.gcfdb... . As a bonus, that 27" monitor will also give me another option for connecting game consoles when I need it, though the fact that it has only one HDMI port is a bummer, because I'm thinking I'll use that with my laptop rather than the DVI because of the whole sound thing. I have yet to me a final decision on that though.

I'm going to REALLY try to be disciplined this time and resist the urge to install anything not necessary on this laptop to keep it humming, plus I'm going to try and keep my deskspace as clear as possible. The HP TouchSmart will go in the girls' playroom for them to use instead of their laptops (though they can still use those as needed). We just need a desk for in there. Ah, the insanity of the tech geek...

When my monitor and keyboard come (two things I can actually justify as birthday gifts from my family), I'll take a photo for the heck of it and post it here if I remember.

HOW THE HECK do you keep it so tidy!? I have a HUGE L shaped desk and its packed with crap all the time. I guess I said it right there, CRAP. I hate to admit but im a bit of a Horder, and not as organized as I would like. Dont get me wrong, I dont have complete junk (i guess horders all think that, right?) My problem is.. I have at least 7 towers with Core2Duo or higher setups.. working for a tech company I have at least 2 stacks of Laptops that would have been thrown or donated, all core Dou too. the Ipad, my mine laptop, I have rack sof DVD cases holding over 2000 CD's and 500+ 360/ps3/Xbox/gamecube/Wii games, let alont the huge boxes that GH games come in and other add ons.. 2- 55" LCD tvs, etc.. etc.. etc.. in an Apartment (yes I own a house but its for retirment.. if i ever do that. I been upgrading jazzing it up for 10+ years.. for "someday", but its not in the same town I live in now ( dont plan on living here forever) so.. and its not a for storage :) ))

I guess it just gets down to room.. Im amazed Bill can dedicate his basement for what he does.. I guess in my case its good and bad.. no room so im limited, but I just cant resist some stuff..

Ah heck, I'm a technology hoarder too. My desk was actually rather more cluttered, but right now I have no major projects (though soon) that require me to have equipment everywhere, where I usually put an extra table or two on the side of my desk. I made a concerted effort after getting the new monitor and moving my old computer to the kids' playroom to try to keep only the essentials on there. I hope to follow through on that effort. It's actually refreshing for the mind to have stuff uncluttered like that (at least for me).

With the above said, I have two portable tables filled with stuff from my old setup/desk organization. That's going in my increasingly overwhelmed basement. In fact, I still have not put all the stuff back from when we had the tankless water heater put back in, so the den area of my basement is filled with equipment that needs to be moved back into the storage area, which of course has to be cleaned first because of the worker mess. I feel like I spend just as much time putting stuff away to have room as I do actually using things.

There have been countless times that I've thought I've gone too far with my collection, though I do genuinely love all that stuff. I think that, heck, I'd be happy to sell it all and just have a dream modern PC setup and just the latest consoles and be done with it. But of course that will never happen because I'd never get anywhere near the value the individual pieces are worth if I sold them separately. So, instead, I collect ever onward it seems.

I have the three current consoles in the family room where my new-ish computer setup is (and Christina has a similar desk setup on the other side of the room). This console generation has been so long that I now have games for all three systems (the DVD cases) two levels deep. This is in addition to a big rack of games from the previous generation of three systems that's down in the basement next to my big racks of all eras computer software. It's a sickness, but I suppose I can justify to a degree that I do do some work and projects about it and it genuinely does bring me joy. Outside of my family, the great loves in my life are videogames and computers (and technology in general), and working out, so I guess those aren't three of the worst things to have a primary interest in...

No argument on the mechanical

No argument on the mechanical I still have a couple of the HEAVY as a car IBM ones .. The G15 is ok.. I dont use the macro buttons like I thought I would. A freind who is a massive PvP in Wow used the macro keys and its SICK how well he does with that stuff.. feels like cheating to me. My home pc is almost gameing and nothing else. Work all day supporitng um and I dont much care to work on mine at home.. even "fun" work.. that is one HUGE change.. I used to do all sorts of stuff with my PC, program (for fun) game design, write the great (mispelled) novel.. etc.. now I turn it on and if Im not buying way to many games ON STEAM or playing some games.. Im not on it.. L4D2 map editing is the last "work" realeted stuff i have been doing.. and after I lost my "story" i have been writing on for over 7 years.. (dang HD crash and a STUPID STUPID user) I started again.. ehh.. so I guess i use it for some work.. Nothing Like you do Im sure.. MY PC are built to game.. I have lots of PC related joystick/pads.. that i buy and never use.. I was shocked when I went to Walmart and there was no PC gamepads.. Even Best Buy only has couple now.. used to be 10+ on the shelves.. its the Gaming Keyboards and mice nowdays.. I can say I have a Razor mamba (wired, not wirless) that I felt was to expensive when I bought it for a corded mouse.. BUT time has told the story.. my logitechs have all died.. The G500 (2 in fact).. while tha mamba has lasted almost 2 years now.. I used to have issue with buttons.. im teh guy that pushes harder when im playing.. while I know it dont matter, its what i do.. so buttons die.. but the last two logitecs.. one wired , one wirless both just died.. they would work then not work.. I also have very fussy on size.. most new gaming mouses are HUGE.. I really liked the size of the old standare Logitecs that everybody used and branded with their own name http://www.directron.com/910001439.html
they whre the right size, just lacked all the cool bells and whistles.. the Razor is only slightly bigger and has the added buttons.. I also like it has some heft.. some guy slike um lite as air.. me i like some weight to um.

I will be intersted to hear your thoughts on the keyboard.

I was debating the Logitech

I was debating the Logitech G19 with that extended keypad, as well as alternatives, and also things like the Zboard, etc., but I decided to keep it pretty straightforward for now (plus I wanted a mechanical keyboard and the Razer seemed like the best value to performance ratio). I *may* add this to the mix, which is similar to your Nostromo: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/keyboards/keyboard/devices/5123 . Even though it's a gaming-centric laptop with many games installed, I really don't have the time to game on it of course... I could justify the expense of the keyboard because I'm suspecting it will make my typing even faster.

I have a 27" monitor.. and

I have a 27" monitor.. and have struggled with going to a 3 monitor setup.. Im still on duel 5870 ATI cards and wont be jumping to anything newer for a bit... Sadly my house has dictated my PC performace.. I live in an older apartment with 15amp lines.. that include both bedrooms on one circuit. My OC'ed 2600K, 2- 5870 and such.. I can pop a fuse when im pushing my system hard and other stuff is going in my house.. so going bigger (and more power) is not an option for now. AND there is nothing i cant play right now.. but some stuff .. (World of tanks) where fine aiming matters.. i can dip in the low 30's FPS and can notice the 'tick tick" mouse movment..

The three monitor setup has been a big debate for me. Still alot of games that wont use it.. And there is my issue.. I would really love some old school 19" square LCD's.. but they are WIDE now.. I do have some limits on space.. some 24" wides would take WAY more room than i have.. and only some of the more EXPENSIVE ones rotate.. and sadly rottaint 24" wides, 3 of them.. while taller really doenst give a whole heck of alot of gaming realstate over a 27".. 3 - older style 19" would be perfcet.. but none come with teh newer style Digitla connections . I alos have some worries on bezzle sizes.. I have had 3 monitors in my cart severl times.. and just never pulled the trigger. I think its still just a bit to soon to deadicate to it..

keep us updated.. since I just idd my upgrading 6-8 mnths ago i wont be doing any for awhile again, SO i gotta admire others setups for now.. Im still on the fence with my SSD (performance wise big thumbs up.. strange issues, not so sure about).. i have a strange bugg where Instals hang.. kill um and run um again and they work perfect.. some googleing and I see more people with the same issues.. on many SSD forums.. and no solutions.

Right now with a STEAM drive being 1 gig.. im having issues where win 7 is on for a month.. my STEAM games played often start slower and slower.. L4D2 will fire up in seconds after a reboot.. but now a month later.. its like a 30-40 second start.. I assume its steam, not my drive.. but? I guess I have a couple new 2TB drives sitting here.. I was thinking of mirror'ing um in raid.. some speed.. but when online gaming isn 90% of my gaming.. laoding fast and waiting for others to join... not high priority.. Im already almost always the first or 2nd person into the games i play.

How is the keyboard ( or let us know when you get it) im still on the old Logitech G15.. Personaly I use one of those Notromos
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000DC643.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg for FPS when i really want to get into teh grove.. but 90% of the time its just the old keyboard.

I have a Zboard with WOW layout i won at a lan one time (COD deathmatch) but that thing is a cool idea with to many design issues.. first its way to noisy... the boards snap in but dont fit for crap.. so they are lose and moving around..
