Matt's Podcast #1: Human Revolution, Elite, Copy Protection, and Pack-Ins

Matt Barton's picture

Hi, guys! This is the first of a planned series of casual podcast segments (monologues, really). In this one, I talk about my experiences playing the new Deus Ex game, Human Revolution, then get into digital downloads, copy protection, pirates, Dungeons & Dragons, and Elite. I also talk a bit about Frayed Knights, a game I'm beta testing for Rampant Coyote. I also find an excuse to bring up my favorite comedy movie, Ghostbusters.

Keep in mind that this is an "off the cuff" type of deal with minimal planning and no editing or frills. If you have suggestions, fine, but don't expect a polished production here. That's what Matt Chat is for! :)

Cool

Hey Matt -

Just finished listening. Funny you put this out now. I was just thinking about the podcast and was trying to decide how to release a solo show - Since you put this under aa_radio, I assume it will be published to the iTunes podcast stream?

Solo Show

This seems like a great idea. AA Radio was great, but if it was so difficult to coordinate everything and keep producing the segments as Matt indicated, this seems like a good way to keep the spirit of it alive. Anyone who wants to do a segment could just put it together on their own and then upload it. The podcasts themselves will be significantly shorter, but as long as the content gets out there, length seems irrelevant. He didn't put it under the AA Radio podcast though, but under his Matt Chat podcast instead.

New podcast

Hey Matt! I enjoyed this quite a bit, and the lack of editing didn't impact my enjoyment at all. It's clear that you have a lot of enthusiasm for the topics you choose to discuss, and even in this, which you dubbed 'lazy', it really shines through. I've been missing the AA radio, so it was really cool to see this up there. I always enjoyed the overall podcast, but your topics usually related to things I'm quite nostalgic for myself. My favorite of all of them was podcast #3, where you talk about the fall of adventure games. Adventure games were such a large part of my childhood, and I miss that golden age. Anyway, I hope you'll continue to put these out whenever your time permits. I look forward to more fireside chats with Matt Barton! =D

Thanks, guys. I actually used

Thanks, guys. I actually used both terms, mattcast (Matt Chat RSS) and aa_radio (Armchair Arcade radio). As I said, this is a rough, unpolished, one-off kind of deal just to test the waters (on my end and yours). I'd love to get Chris and anyone else involved, including folks who aren't on the staff. Chris knows the routine, so by all means post away!

Does anyone know of a service for podcasts that's similar to YouTube? Something like it would be ideal, I think, since otherwise you'll need a place to upload the file. We can host them here, of course, but that's an extra step you may not want to take. It'd be nice if you could just upload it somewhere else and then post the link or perhaps a player app.

If you other guys have some ideas for special podcasts you'd like to do, just let us know. We can't guarantee any big audience for you, but if you keep it short and sweet (under 30 mins) I bet you'll have some listeners. Getting feedback, of course, is the hard part.

Enjoyed it

Thanks for doing this Matt. I enjoyed listening to this, even without any cleanup or editing. I rather like the conversational feel, and the tangents + tangents wandering.

Datasettes.... oh lord, do I remember waiting for crap to load on my Vic-20. The greatest single moment on that machine was finding an article in Compute! magazine, with a listing for a short little program called "TurboTape". It used a special encoding scheme, and bypassed the usual tape-routines in the kernel ROM code to drive the Datasette directly, as fast as the CPU would go. A 20-minute load/save time dropped to 30-seconds or so. It was like the heavens parted and a light shone down...

Of course, it was unreliable as heck, so you had to use better quality tapes. (No more recording over the Merle Haggard tapes I swiped from my grandmother's smoke-laden cabinet.) I still have the little notebook where I wrote down the tape-marker numbers for each program I saved. Two copies of the "Turbo" version, then a long-slow-safe version as a failsafe.

Wow... do I not miss the old days sometimes.

Really enjoyed this, shame

Really enjoyed this, shame about the numbers on the main podcast but I'm glad you decided to continue. So more please!

One thing I'd like to hear you chat about is the Baldurs Gate series. General thoughts, its effect on RPG's over the year and possibly more about the games history, your experiences with them or its add ons etc.

Happy to do that, Lorfarius. Actually, with this format, it'll be a lot easier for me to discuss a big range of topics. Regarding Baldur's Gate, did you happen to catch my Matt Chat on it a few months back?

Yep I did but you can never

Yep I did but you can never get enough Baldurs Gate! The only RPG's that even came close for me was Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
