From Dust... has anyone here tried it?

So as anyone who remembers me might notice, I haven't been on Armchair Arcade in a very long time. Between graduating College, getting a full time job, and helping run a very successful convention this Summer (doubled our attendance versus the prior year! Yes!) I haven't really had the time to post anything anywhere, including my beloved Amibay website. Well as I finally get into the swing of things (and consolidate my student loans thanks to the greedy money grubbing Sallie Mae.... the bastards.) I can start to sit back a little more and look into new products and old products that I never got a chance to play. So I noticed an advert for a game coming out on live arcade and steam call From Dust. I was interested in it, but I have seen just absolutely horrifying reports that the DRM from UBISoft makes the game completely unplayable. Has anyone here tried it? What do you think? Is it worth picking up and trying even with the atrocious DRM? Or do I stand firm on my belief that DRM is more harmful than helpful and stay away? As always your input and advice is helpful.

I downloaded the demo and

I downloaded the demo and played it on my 360 today. I had fun, but not sure I'd want to spring for the full version. Definitely a strong Populous influence there, probably safe to call it "inspired by" at the very least. However, I think Populous has more style and/or charm going for it. These guys with their masks just kinda freak me out.

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up. Pretty much everyone I have talked to about it now says, don't buy the PC version, it's a disaster. If you're desperate buy the Live Arcade release. I didn't want to use my X-Box for it though. I was hoping the controls would be great for the computer. The thing that irritates me about crappy controls is that the game was originally being designed for the PC and then somewhere along the way that changed. All the early concept demos I saw showcased it as a PC only release. Oh well. I cannot abide by the DRM, so I guess I won't buy it. Ubisoft needs to get their heads out of their rears and understand that all they are doing is alienating legitimate buyers. Blizzard is going to find out the same thing with the requirement of always on internet for Diablo 3 even in single player.

I have Dust, i think of it as

I have Dust, i think of it as the modern successor to Populous, the game mechinic is a bit like that. You dont control the people, just the land, and some spells. Its a very good looking game, plays as it should. Personally as Populous was one of my personal favorites, this game fits my style of gaming quite well. The day I bought it played for about 6 hours staight. Its really about guiding the people to wher you want them to go. YOu can pick up anything but solid rock ( the people/animails and trees) so it basicly consists of you finding places to pull dirt from and making bridges for the people to cross . also a lake, you can pick up water (good ot be a god). YOu gain strength (or completion of level) by getting the people ot build villages and they will spread vegatian, and if you get enouhg vegations animals appear. In desert worlds you have to find water and water the vegations to make it spread.. Lava can be dumped in water to make solid rock, which you can psreed dirt over to make land that people can live on (or just cross).

The setbacks for you in this game.. not enouhg dirt, manage it.. Lava, it never ends (you cant damn it up) and if it hits water it turns to solid rock ( hence you have to beat the lava before it covers everything, sorta). Waterfalls.. sometime when digging you hit a psring, and water.. which your people cant cross, water can be dirrected... and sometime if your lucky stopped. Many level have riviers you need ot minupulate direction on.
Randomly the world (so to speak) will turn against you, giant waves.. but the frst spell your people get is a one to "moses" the water, your village will be safe as the water goes around it, but it will disrupt everything else.. Some levels wil have you build rock walls with lava to stop this, etc..

YOu really just build land up and down (populous) throw a spesll to help your people (popolous) and watch and guide them.. With that said, its not popolous.. its like it..

The negatives (small, but must be mentioned) the DRM as you say, my understanding is they are patching this (please read about patch upcomming and be comfortble with it before purchase). IT does suck.. your games are saved not on your PC but a cloud.. so the alwasy on thing matters most when quiting and saving.. I have played it for a few hours 3 times.. and 2X the save didnt work.. so I had to start over.. not so bad, but after a few 4+ game session.. I'm waiting on the patch before doing it again.
Second.. if minupulating the ground isnt fun to you.. (in some levels with lava you ahve to constinatly be aware and move it) it can be a bit .. annoying, scoop, drop non stop for 15 minutes while trying to help your people here and there.. Generally its not to bad but a few levels are not "fun"...

I would say as a HUGE popolous fan I give the game a 8.5 out of 10 a MUST buy for me.. the CURRENT unpatched game.. with saves being sperodic.. I would not buy it.. for that fact alone.. if the patch fixes that (again i encourage you to not dismiss it until the patch comes out, then decide)

here is a game the DRM is really a problem, not a "oh no's they know my stuff" it really actually breaks the game, with saves not working, you have to start over every time. BUT they have promised a patch.

Huge thumbs up if the patch works, a very sad thumbs down if it doesnt as you will miss a great game IMHO..
