As a RTS strategy nut i have played ALMOST all of them.. and have seen the evolving from resource to control point. Singel units to groups, all which work well.. many say Compnay of Hero's pionered this concept.. And COH was surly the game that introduced the world to a newer "fresher" style of RTS.. But the sad note is a Litel know company (back then) named TIMEGATE produced one of the greatest unknown RTS that quite honestly is COH (in many ways) but before it. It was littel known and hard to find on shelves. The good news, STEAM released it today, KOHAN (and exp pack) and KOHAN II.

Kohan still uses cities, but more like CIV does.. you build a forge you can produce steel for knights.. but you can also upgrade it to prodcue a differnt unit type or better armour.. You have gold, ore, tree's, rocks and magic (resources) all come from natural sources (glowy rocks for magic) and from your towns.. a mill wil produce so many units a second a quary the same.. Mage towers will produce magic also.. Where the game was ORIGINAL when it came out was, you built small ARMIES.. each army could hold a HERO (which made all units in it cheaper, but you have only so many hero's) 4 "normal" spots.. 2 "add" spots and if you have the cash and cities to produce 2 "special" spots.. so a FULL army could have 4 knights 2 archers and 1 mage and 1 ranger (teh first 4 and the 2 adds could only be "normal units" the last 2 spots you could mix and match. When units died as long as one was laive he could run to a town (towns have supply raduis) and if he sat there long enouhg all units came back (it took quite some time in the game world, and weakest units filled in first). This game rewarded you for keeping troops alive also as teh gain exp as they go.. and specail abilities with them.. slow regen, mages could sumon golums to fight for them, priest gould mas heal etc.. as they leveled.. SO it was a smart movie to use your best units and keep them alive.. One thing I enjoyed alot was the fact if you seiged a city and took it over you could build their units and command them.. and there are several unit types.. Humans, Uber touhg Humans, Brutes, Elves, and the Cyann (the bad guys) who have th bility to use some units for free ( no upkeep... undead dont neeed anything)..

I would STRONGLY suggest any RTS lovers to check it out on steam, maybe read up a bit, watch a Youtube video of the game.. Personally its eaisly a top 5 best RTS ever for me.. Kohan is MUCH MUCH harder than KOHAN II, so if you want a bit of a friendly experinace, I suggest KOHAN II.. but KOHAN one has the exp pack.. and is quite the challange.. even for the die hard RTS guys.

was an Instant purchase for me today as I seen it. $17 for all 3.. a tiny bit pricey for an older game and Im sure there will be slaes down the road.. but i promise if you like RTS its worth every penny.

Yeah, I saw that email. I should probably at least pick up the WC games since I'll undoubtedly be covering them in Matt Chat one day.

ALSO!!! Wing Commander 1 & II are on GOG now! dang dang dang.. to many good games. Times to get out the flight stick. Side note, in Best buy the other day looking for a gamepad, THEY DONT HAVE ANY.. Wlamart didnt either.. no PC controlers.. I wonder if my first gen USB Siatec flight control system will work on Win7? I havent had a Joystick hooked to my pc in years.

I typically use an Xbox 360 gamepad on my PC these days, though I have a few options. I recently bought this flightstick, which works on PC and PS3, and is cheap: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CXYMFS/ref=wms_ohs_product_T2 . Mostly for Flight Simulator on the PC side and the jet fighting games on the PS3...

Man, this DOES sound like a good series. I've been hesitant to invest in PC gaming since I bought my 360, though, since I enjoy playing from the couch and not in the office (which gets very hot in the summer). Still, I might have to make an exception for this. I don't generally like being frustrated with games, though, so Kohan II might be my poison of choice.

yes Kohan II has refined the game a bit, the later levels are no where near as hard as the original game. The graphics are improved (but the first one still looks fine). I might suggest trying Kohan II and if you enjoy it enouhg try the first one, it wont ruin the stories (yes like any RTS they make a small attempt at a story). Kohan II will hone your skills, KOHAN will test them.. and you..

Toy soilders (first one) on the 360 is easily my favorite Tower Defence/action game.. i wish it was on the PC so i felt more at home with the controls. I must admit I planned on purchaseing the new one, spent the time to add teh credits to my live account the other day for it specifilcy.

and played Kohan from about 7:00 last night till 3am.. dang it..
