WOW I knew there was a Red

WOW I knew there was a Red Dawn vibe to it.. but that does explain alot. Red Dawn used some brutal tactics from the invaders to make what the kids where doing 'accepetable', this game uses that to great effect..

I wonder if he pitched a Red Dawn game and couldnt get rights or something and went modern? or maybe they figured using the old 80's movie was a bad idea (remake of Red Dawn is still happening I think).. would be interesting if he tried to tie it to red dawn.. or as you say just ripped his own stuff off.

one good thing on STEAM SALE.. i ahve most of the sale stuff I think Im at about $90 and only 1 day to go... maybe stay under $100

Homefront = Red Dawn 1.5

I do agree, the presentation of a occuping force was done well, maybe a bit over the top. But in the real world I think they would have to be brutal to keep the people in line.. we have far to many lose guns in our country.. you invade you not only are attacking the military, you ahve half the population with a gun.. not that way in other countrys. I felt like I was in RED DAWN (80's movie) but present day a little bit..

I loved that movie as a kid, though I think I'd have a hard time watching it today. Apparently the same guy who wrote that movie wrote the script for Homefront. He basically plagiarized himself...

i too was suprised at the

i too was suprised at the review for homefront. I know one stickler was the graphics. I can agree they where not top of the line, but very servicable, and no where near "awful" or even "bad" just not matching AAA titles. With that said the modeler.. the female, belly shirt an all in combat.. was BAD!!!! she looked like a pot gutted ex stripper to me.. But thats is way different, its 'attractive vs rendered" she was ugly in my eyes as a model... not graphicly. I was impressed with the setting, running through backyards and such, debri everywhere, cloths on lines, junk appliances, etc.. it "felt" correct. The fence laying down so you could go over the atrifical barrier fences was a bit overdone.. but eh.. every FPS is limited in size, this one is a bit more liner than most.. but the fire fights are not run around ones, more a "checkpoint with heavy guards you have to pass" type fire fights.

I do agree, the presentation of a occuping force was done well, maybe a bit over the top. FEAR is a series I really like too. While i think the "fear" part is a bit under played, its mostly battles with armed soilders, some of the "jumps" work well.. the first one when you meet your nemesis (almost said wjho he was , dont want to ruin it) on the rooftop, i about soiled my pants. very scary movie suprise jump out and get you moment. I think ther real reason i like it... its not aliens, its not monsters, its something a bit different in the standard FPS game. And they use Shadows, lights, and little creepy moments very well. Personally the parking ramp and rooftop fights where epic to me.. and not easy. They dont send guys at you from 100 directions.. you know where the enemy is.. but the 4 on 1 thing.. they know where you are too.. so its a true battle... no guns blazing.. you will die. you ahve to outthink them, outflank them, get them to come to you. While the AI is no master.. I felt challanged.. and the SUPER MINI BOSS BATTLES (which i normally hate as its some 1 billion HP monster you just have to blast away at for 10 minutes and hide) are exciting as most are unexpected and they do give you th tools to win... if you think a bit. personally I liked the first one the most.. but all where pretty good.

Wanted to add a bit about Homefront...

I never played any of them, so this will be a good introduction for me to the series. The FEAR series and the Dead Space series would definitely warrant coverage in Chapter 1 if we ever did a revision of Vintage Games...

The FEAR and Dead Space series are definitely top notch when it comes to all the prerequisites that make a compelling game that you actually feel a part of.

One thing I left out regarding Homefront is that it didn't get reviews that were all that great, however, this is where the review system sometimes fails. If you look at Homefront just as an FPS, then, it sort of falls in the same category as all the others out there. But, from the opening 5 minutes, the game sucks you in and you're so pissed off at the enemy that invaded your midwest hometown that all you want to do it "kill" them all. I know the game focuses activities in the USA, but I dare anybody that has any feelings at all to go through the initial bus ride to the prison, see what goes down, and then decides not to play the game through to the end. It is a short game as I completed it in less than a week, however, it was one of the best 8-10 hours I've had in a long time.

Cheers

to many choices

I have a choice between FEAR 3, Mafia II, Homefront, or Red Faction: Armageddon on PC for free. Which one should I get?

Fear3: while I wont agree with it being better tehn the first two, I will agree its a good game, less horror, more Shooter than the other two.. not that they where not 90% shooter.

mafia II: GTA, Just Cuase, Red Dead Redemption, Saints Row... same game different year. Personally after Red Dead they all seem lacking, but mafia II did keep me playing till the end. I enjoyed it

Homefront: lots of scripted events and lots of shooter, personally I really liked it (but most reviews hated it or said it was average)

Red Faction: Armageddon : loved Gurrilla... installed this and looked at it abit, but havent played it much... so cant say to much.

I might go Fear 3 or Homefront as my top picks. But I dont think you can go wrong with any.. 3 shooters and one open world game. Mafia II i think would play better with a console IMHO, the shooters all better on PC.

Only one choice here...

I've played them all but Mafia II, and the clear choice above all of them would be FEAR 3. I'm on the 6th of 8 intervals (missions) and it's 100 pct better than the first 2, which I also thought were great. Homefront would be a close 2nd, followed by Red Faction. The only reason Red Faction isn't at the head of the list is the decision the dev made to go linear FPS for this followup. Its ok, but doesn't hold a candle to FEAR 3.
