Apple's Amazing Keynote - Revenge of the iPad!

Bill Loguidice's picture

Well, Apple did it, they actually lived up to the hype yet again. Steve Jobs coming out on stage and doing the presentation was a brilliant touch. No matter what you think of Jobs or Apple, good for him. As for the iPad 2, well, Apple didn't merely iterate slightly, they did actually make a true "2", no now all those silly rumors of an iPad 3 coming out in the fall can be put to rest. 1.3 pounds, THINNER than my iPhone 4, new A5 processor, improved graphics, dual cameras, available in black and white, AT&T and Verizon from day one, 10 hour battery life, $499 starting price (maxes out at $829 for 64GB with WiFi/3G), HDMI mirrored output up to 1080p, smart covers, etc. I think my hemming and hawing over what tablet to get was for naught as the decision has been made rather handily for me. Apple is just too far ahead of the competition at this point. Maybe that will change within a few years, but right now, all things considered, the iPad 2 is the only logical choice in tablets. It hits the US on March 11 and rolls out to 26 more countries on March 25. So, what do you guys think? Are you sold or do you think there will be better options in 2011?

Well, I haven't been there yet so don't know what they offer. But I'd prefer to keep the bills down. Paying $120 per month now for two Black berries.

I pay $134.99 per month ($147.35 with all the tax nonsense) for two iPhone 4's with 700 shared FamilyTalk minutes, 200 text messages each, unlimited data on mine, and 2GB of data for Christina's. These things aren't cheap.

By the way, I really wasn't referring to games on the smartphones (just useful apps in general), but that's certainly an element. That's the one device you have with you at all times.

Wow .. I'm paying less than $100 (closer to $90) per month for two iPhones with unlimited internet and a few hundred free minutes (any network) and texts! Then again, I'm in the UK :)

Yeah, our cell phone

Yeah, our cell phone ecosystem here is a joke compared to places like Europe and Japan (our 4G mess is particularly pathetic). I think it's a holdover from our superior landline services--lots of legacy nonsense from that, which other countries weren't necessarily shackled with.

we are in the stoneage on so much tech... all do to greed and goverment. MY 2 smartphones and 2000 minutes is $129. WE DO have one good thing going.. cell phone coverage is soon no longer going ot be a sales pitch.. pretty soon we will have pretty much equal coverage and maybe 2-3 carriers, they will have to offer some value soon and compete on plans, price... right now its the phone wars game.. but its kinda dieing down.. the Iphone on Verizon didnt even make a blip and everybody thought it was going to be some huge AT&T exoduse.. sounds like they had a 3-6% drop.. but the mix was iphone and android, not iphone like so many predicted.. There is no doubt its a refined machine.. but android phones has done the one thing us americans always liked.. selection.. we dont like to be the same.. 2 girls cant show up with eth same dress.. the same phone? no way.. if we all have the same one its not cool enough.. 2-3 yers and they will be the same too (android and Iphones)... Im really interested in where apple will go with Steves failing health. It went pretty bad last time he wasnt running the ship.

Well matt If i can.. i will be joining ya.. I rally want rid of my email... I told um I want a cehap clear phone... but I think im going to get veto'd for work. and I wouldnt mind a $35 bill again... my company just pays my data plan plus a $30 month phone allowance. I would love a phone that sounded good again instead of "good enough"

Apparently my inscribed white

Apparently my inscribed white 64GB iPad 2 will be arriving early, on the 7th. This will be good because it should be a big help (as a PDF reference source) writing these books. I wonder if Christina's will be arriving a bit early as well?

My iPad 2 came:

My iPad 2 came: http://yfrog.com/z/h75iefqj I'll set it up after I get home...

EDIT: By the way, the reaction at work and with some people on Facebook has been interesting. I've heard no end of "I want one" or "I ordered one too" from people. These are people that you would never think would be into any type of tech like this, yet there they are genuinely excited about it. Apple's marketing is certifiably genius!

Apparently the Xoom is even struggling to sell 100,000 tablets: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nf/20110406/tc_nf/78052 . It's truly about iPad 2 and then everyone else for the remainder of 2011 it seems...

Being the android Fanboy I am

Being the android Fanboy I am (all this fanboy talk has me thinking.. I may just be and Andorid fanboy, hopefuly not in the worst way, blindly) I would never purchase a XOOM in a million years.. Objectivly I would have to be in the Ipads camp, there is nothing that does what it does for the price. I look at the XOOM and really wonder if they are trying to shoot themselves in the foot? The Ipad really only has a few "real" negatives... And the XOOM didnt even try to capitilize on them. If you wanna beat #1 you gotta be better then #1, and they simply are not, and from my reading, not even close. When I look it has a slightly larger and better screen, more ram, and its really only overwhelming Plus is the chrome browser (makes safari look like netscape from the early 90's) and google apps if you use um.. bu thats no where near enouhg to sway even me the Android fan. its heavy, its 32 instead of 64 (memory cost is so small a thing, why ? why? why? didnt they go 64?

I hear the Blackberry one comming 'soon' (a year?) is spose to be pretty impressive... but I do remebere hearing that about XOOM too... I kinda wonder if Apple hasnt won this war already? the Ipod is not the only MP3 player but it sure rules the market (maybe Itunes has a bit to do with that?) you can get a cheaper just as good one... but even I oen a Ipod (120 gigs for $120 referb? couldnt refuse it). I cant see any Tablet makers making anything that has that "killer" reason to not get an Ipad... maybe in 2-3 years when Android is (honeycomb) has a lasrger market share? so people will want the same on phone and tablet like the apple?

I think you clearly got the King for the foreseable future.

I'm jerking back and forth

I'm jerking back and forth here. Go nuts with iPhone, half-ass it with Android, or suck it up and go barebones.

I'm probably going to get the iPhone just because Bill has a point--I can't really be a games expert if I'm locked out of one of the most innovative platforms right now. I've heard great things about Android, but it looks like that's mostly people just happy to have an alternative and with some interest in promoting a rival (which is understandable).

Elizabeth was saying that folks are getting the last-gen iPhone for next to nothing right now.

Yeah, it's $49 for the 3GS. Honestly though, the improvements in the iPhone 4, from screen to cameras to battery life make a 3GS an unwise investment in my opinion. Plus, it's only the 8GB model of the 3GS. You really don't want anything less than 16GB with an iPhone, with the present max of 32GB even better. Also, keep in mind that the 3GS only works on AT&T, while the 4 works on either AT&T or Verizon.

I guess it depends on what you use it for, but why would you need so much space? I have a 16 GB 3GS and currently use all of 1.5 GB of storage on it. I never put videos on it (what's the point?). I guess I could put more music on it..but I have never really needed music on the run.

As for upgrading - it is a tough boat to be in right now. 4G networks are are being rolled out, and goodness knows how well that is going to go.

The deal for a 3GS is a good one, but it locks you into a contract with that phone and doesn't allow for a cheap upgrade when the iPhone 5 (whatever it may be) gets released. Of course, if you are on the fence about a smart phone...the 3GS deal let's you get in for the price of a dumb phone...granted, you still have to pay the plan's pricing.
