GAMEBOX-first look

My gamebox arrived a few days ago and I fnally got to take a look. It was shipped from Hong Kong and arrived in its orginal packagewrapped in a bubble envelope. Not the best packageing, but it arrived looking great. The box has cardboard deviders to keep the pieces in place. Its the GAMEBOX, one PS like controler (feels like a cheap knock off) with the buttons lables abcd instead of symbols, one standard 4 foot red/white/yellow cable and a power supply with a 4 foot cord. The cords are quite short, but serviceable. IT also includes a singel sheet of paper folded with basic instructions on front and warrenty and trouble shooting on back. its all english. the one thing i noted was the cartridge slot appears (by the instrustions) to supprt the "popular GBA game card" which means nothing to me? The actual console seems solid enough if a bit cheap. It has a flip down door on front with 4 USB ports. the left side has what appears to be a Cartridge slot. the Right side has a mini SD slot and a mini USB input. The back has the power plug in and the video plug in. The bottom has vent slots. the top is SHINY plastic (finger print heaven). it has no buttons per say, but appear to have a power and reset button on each front corner as in touch senstaive?

when it was all unpacked one of the shoulder buttons on the gamepad was off, it went back on, with some force, so I wonder how it ever came off? When i first hooked it all up it appeared not to work. The power plug or actual connection to the console seems to be sloppy and not a great fit. Some wiggling and all is good, im not sure if i just dint have it plugged in good or its sloppy, time will tell.

when it first coems on it has a slighly choppy animation then the left side of the screen iwll display a graphic for the game (box art or a screen cap, some are animated) and the right side is a list of stuff installed. There is a small icon in front of each name which appears to be "type" of file. Neo Geo games seem to have VQP (or VQF) file name, AVI have well.. AVI and others have a folder Icon. I see what appears to be NEO GEO games (lots) Capcom games, MARIO CART (SNES?) and METROID (nes?)

The screen looks kinda washed out on the menu... and yes, so far Im typing this and still ahve not got it to start anything. All the buttons appear to reset the tiel list and the Instructions do not say how to start a game, just that you can once its all hooked up.

The console has a failry loud fan... not as bad as a Xbox 360 but close...for such a little box. I would "guess" its a very cheap fan and as its loud its pushing some air, bad part to fail. Of course it may last forever?

Still have got nothing to start, the instructions say the first time a game is played it can take 3 minutes, after that it should take about 20-30 seconds.. I think i have gotton it figured out.. i have tied the A B C D, and SELECT, i just tired the START key and it seem to be doing something ( no scrolling of title Im on, all other buttons title still scrolls after pressing it) Trying AVATAR 2009Xvid.avi (waht is this?)... waiting game now.. 1 minute..... 2 minutes.... dang this thing is loud when its 1 foot from your face.. 3 minutes.... (yes Im timing it).. 4 minutes.. bathroom break, im getting bored and think this thing doesnt work. 5 Minutes, the instructions actually say i must wait patiently. 6 Minutes... patients gone.. Now trying Mario Kart (super Circuit).. 1 minute...2 minutes.... 3 minutes.... my impresions are starting to turn ugly. 4 minutes...

Ok reset.. woot yes the buttons are touch sensative.. very sensative.. dont even breth on them or they work.
Street Fighter ZERO 1 minute....2 mnutes... 3minutes... ok reread Instructions

Press the A button to start game (thought I had tried it ) works , Super Streetfighter loads in about 2-5 seconds. Stupid user!!!!!

Street fighter Zero, not a version I played, is the Asain one as alot of text is not sanyting I can read. Sound is a bit muddy, not bad actually but has issues. Color and gameplay seem fine, but I never played this one in Arcade so no idea.

Avatar 2009 AVI- Loads in about 5 seconds. Its AVATAR the movie (blue guys!) it cant be whole movie (?) it starts at spot where our hero is attacked by the blue cat thing and jumps in wterfall... File is labled 720P but I cant see that it is.. its actually pretty good looking vut the digita jaggies are showing in water and in fast action.. it was about 2 minutes of movie... It would make an OK kids movie player depending on how it plays home encoded stuff and formats it can handle (short list in instructions on that).

Forgotten WOrlds- longer load must be an arcade rom... cant rotate gun... turns game into straight ahead shooter.. BAD!!!

Metroid Zero Mission- 3-5 second load, language option. seems to play fine had a 2004 date and nintendo logo.. never played this either.

1941- appers ot be arcade rom, game shows 1941 COUNTER ATTACK (believe its a bootleg of 1941) Nope I haev played this.. not sure if it was a NEO GEO game or? Feels a bit sluggish on controls... not good.

Three Wonders- Capcom Arcade rom- one of my favorites... plays good, maybe just maybe a tick slow.. after 1941 Im maybe feeling something thts not there..

Caption Comando- Capcom Arcade rom- Another one I liked.. SOme vey slight stutter in scrolling but actual gameplay seems pretty good. Again music is a bit iffy but ok...

Ghouls and Ghosts-arcade rom- Playd fine but again some scrolling issues..

Metal SlugX- Neo Geo rom- suprisingly this one played the best so far... didnt notice much of any problem.

Pang3- Arcade rom(1995, may be newest game on here)...plays well to bad I suck at it...

Strider- Arcade rom-seems to play well

Mario Kart-2001 Nintendo-singel player only-SNES?- seems to do mode 7 graphics just fine...

Ok there are about 60 games on here, Capcom/neogeo and a few od balls. it appears this thing can emulate up to the SNES.
the Capcom games play ok, but not perfect. they are good enough, but the scrolling has noticable issues. Snes seems good, Neo Geo seems good. Sound is not great, but OK. You have to RESET to get out of games, not a huge deal, but it means going to the actual console to do it. The fan is to loud and after an hour fo testing and playing the box isnt hot at all.. The touch sensative buttons are way to sensative.

Card slots and addons? no idea.. I have no MINI SD to test.. Honestly for $60 its a pretty nie little machine, its got some HUGE flaws, but all the games are playable, there are lots of games. I would say it was worth it. There are alot of this type of thing out there, but this one works pretty well as a do all.

I would post some pics ( and maybe still will) but not sure what best way to do it here is.

Interesting! My main concern

Interesting! My main concern would be the audio-visual quality since it's composite. Also, it would be interesting if it played actual GBA cartridges. Otherwise unless the emu's can be upgraded, it sounds like another not-quite-there-device... The USB and mini-SD card slot just beg to be explored!

Sucks the Micro SD can't read anything but GBA games.

Would had rocked if the micro sd card could read Mame roms, that would make this $50 console rocking. Also, nobody has been able to find the controllers for sale (since the usb ports aren't standard). Kind of silly to put 4 usb ports (some of the games are 4 players on the unit I believe) and only have one controller.

I have spent more time with

I have spent more time with it. There is scrolling issues on the Capcom games, its not a gmae breaker, but its there so I'm mentioning it. I dont have a MAME emulator set up and working atm so I cant confirm... but I notice it. All the Neo Geo games seem to play fine. many of them are the asian versions, none I couldnt play ebcuase I couldnt understand text, but thye seem to be "world "versions.. Most text is english but some isnt.
From my time with it on I'm thinking the loud fan is not needed... ther is no heat whatsoever from it. Either it doenst need a fan or the one is doing a GREAT job.
Sound is not great, its as I said, sorta muddy, again not a game breaker, many wont care.
Several of the games have strange names but are games I have seen Rnglish versions of.
Some of the notable games.. 3 or 4 of the KIng Of fighters, 4 Street Fighters II(no original, dispointed), 3 or 4 soccer games I have never played, I can see this is aimed more at any country but the US. Final Fight, Caddilac and Dinos, PUNISHER (this one suprises me as its a COMIC licened game (well so is caddilac and dino's) Magic Sword, King Arthur... not all the Capcom games (no AvsP, AD&D, etc) not all the Beo Geo games, but I see most that where in arcades... VERY FEW SNES games Metroid and Mario Kart are it I think. In fact all the games are Capcom and Neo Geo but 2 i think.
Anybody looking for a FAITHFULL EMU machine should not buy this, sound and scrolling are off. The games all play good enouhg IMHO, but are not clones of there original state.
Im sure the contoler is a PSOne knock off, it even has the analog button (which does nothing on this system as far as I can see) Its cheap but solid, it should work fine. I have a clone for my PC that I plan on plugging inand seeing if its recognized.

The mini usb, the instrustions say 'at this time is for debugging" and is not open to users temporarliy (maybe will be sometime?). Im going ot pick up a mini SD card in town if they have some cheap ones on Sat.
The cart slot is a mystery to me as I have all the nintendo hand helds but never played with them much. They are (but teh DS) packed away so I cant see a cart. Ok dug my DS out.. it appears to be the same size cart as the advance uses.

Ok as I was typing this i found some info, a spanish website has hacked it and are dumping the roms (not successfull just yet). I took my RV4 cards mini Sd card and copied a high quality AVI to it.. played very well, looked good and sound was good.. better then the Avatar test avi included with it. Seems a capable AVI player. The arcade forum says GBA roms work well in it..

Most are complaing about sound and video quality. I myself agree with sound, but I think teh video qaulity isnt that bad. Its not top nothc, but for a comp its pretty ok. The plugs in front are NOT USB, they just use USB type harware. So a standard USB controler wont work. Also the 2nd thumbstik is a dummy on the controler that came with it (good reason Forgottne worlds wont shoot any direction).
The mini USB wont do anyting unless you bridge a couple points on the board inside.

Ok i tred some roms... I tired them in zip format ( the actual games on teh machine say mercj.zip in the title (mercs for Neo geo) NO GO so far. I think they are doing something silly like using the folders to sort games, but once in the folder it will run only a specif name file (somethig I dont know) ya that would be a cheezy way, but when you select a folder is says "no file of that name"

More info If I get a mini SD card i can use just for testing I dont wanna screw up my DS one :).

Some addition information

The USB plugs used by the joypad are in fact NO usb ports just connectors that look like USB.
The right analog stick is not wired in so it only has shoulder buttons, one stick and a thumb-pad

:)

What's the point of the right analog stick, then? It has to have SOME purpose, otherwise they would have just blocked it out, no? Very odd!

Special bogus part

No it is a separate seemingly specially designed bogus part. It does nothing except emulating a real stick in form and feel.
