I have been a fan of Derek Smart since the battlecruiser days. He is VERY vocal and takes no crap, good natured or not, and has no fear of stateing what he thinks. Now I did say FAN, yes I am a FAN, of his work, his vocal opinions (I said OPINIONS!) the way he deals with his work, and pretty much most of what he says. I dont agree with it all, but I am a fan of it. Many people see him as the EVIL guy, he will jump on flamers, and what many people consider non flamers with a vengance unseen and unheard of in community figureheads. Do i think he is overboard sometimes, hmmm I find that hard to answer. I think he really cares about his products and shows excessive attuitude to those that do not. Now I know we are all suposed to take critisism nicely and say "thanks" we all do it.. many times its good and helps us improve, but there are times each of us say "they dont know what the heck they are talking about" with our in head voice and publicy say "thanks!". Derek doesnt do this, if he doesnt like it he says. And he does get alot of "flak", he doesnt reply to it all, so I assume he may agree with some of it.
I sometimes think we have no middle ground anymore, the poeple who take all suggestions and say thaks and file them away, or the ones who verbelly let you know about the ones they think are no good. Where is the person who can say, no, not a good idea, and yes, thanks that may work? I do beleive Derek may not be in the middle ground, but sometimes I wonder if getting peoples goats sometimes inst needed. Gameing public (most) have no idea waht is involved in game makeing, balanceing, marketing, making money, etc.. yet we are full of idea on how to make it all better.

I'm not saying he does things right, but I do think he does put some whiney people in there place, and yes sometimes comes off as a bit whiney himslef.. but that just makes him Human like the rest of us In my opinion..I do think he cares, and that may be the most important thing. Of course that just the way I see it, Im sure Derek or other people see it in quite a different light. Reguardless, I do enjoy reading his posts, both the "whats going on" and the "stay out of my forums" ones.. I think he is a guy I would love to argue and talk withsometime, even if we didnt agree, it would be loud, and it would make me think.. and isnt that a good thing?

What do you guys think about devolpers who can "rant" (myeb not the best choice of words) with the best of them in forums?

It is annoying when you get

It is annoying when you get "marketing guy speak." It's like those pointless interviews of athletes after their big win.

"How did it feel to make the game winning shot!?"
"Oh I'm just glad we played like a team and my nike shoes held up blah blah."

If I were in the position of having developed a popular game and having mobs upon mobs of complainers on the forum I'm not sure what I would do. You can't make everybody happy obviously, because not everyone is having the same experience. I come from a movie background, where criticism is much easier to interpret (referred pain principle), but all the criticism applies to future projects. There is no patching or updating a movie. I think I would do my best to address the universal complaints/criticisms but I really don't have the energy to fight hordes of anonymous people on the internet, despite how much it could hurt to have people tear a part my creation.

Then again what does Derek usually lash out about? If the game is finished, there isn't much need to address complaints other than either updating the game or letting the game do the talking itself or taking it in consideration for the next game. Is he usually just defending his choices or game flaws? One thing I think most consumers never understand is the sacrifices and compromises creators must make. There is always a gap between what you wanted to do and what you ended up being able to make. I have pretty vivid memories of screening movies and having people like it or not but really want to know why I did X instead of Y, when in reality I really wanted to do Y instead of X, but reality prevented such.

Anyway, in your mind is there a developer/designer that has excellent relations with their fans?

Well My post wasnt so much

Well My post wasnt so much about Derek Smart, as about developers posting. I know I went into alot about Derek, he is known to shake the tree just to shake it sometimes in the past, I have no idea if he doews much anymore. I myslef prefer his brand of "posting" he says what he thinks. To many developers are to nice, to worried about makeing some faorum members mad,etc.. As a heavy MMORPG player I see so many things changed in games to appease the Forum posters. Games with 1000's of players yet a post with 200 replies gets action? less then a percent of the game playing public posts, but they get hte attention, the fawning?

I guess I like my replies true to the person who makes them, not the "marketing guy speak". That isnt to say alot of forum posters are not correct, but forums as a whole on products (games) are seldom full of "great idea" its mostly posts about broken stuff (which is good!). People do not come to game official forums to talk about cool things, they normally come to complain. You dont ask a mechanic whats good about a car, you ask him what is bad.

hearing it straight is much better than double talk to keep me calm. Derek is the extreme end of the spectrum, but I like it. I know many do not (and maybe his attuitude is more a selling point, gets him some headlines), but I have read so many "we will do what those 3 people ask" or other suck up stuff... I like to hear "its a bad idea for 90% of the game players, sorry for that 10% it was a good idea, but we are not going to do it".

In a way developers posting is a bad idea.. people take a post of a dev as GODS own truth.. no room to change. they anylize it to death, dwell on it far to much. I just think developers should be able to speak there mind too. us forum posters can scream all we want, why cant they?

I'm not familiar with Derek

I'm not familiar with Derek Smart so I looked him up in a few places. I found this quote on his wikipedia article:

"Sometimes when I get online, and it's quiet, and I see something that attracts my attention, I'll post just to piss these guys off. That's why I do it. Because I'm in a good mood that day, I go in there and I start trouble."

Sounds like the kind of guy I wouldn't like. I don't see the goodness in communicating with people with the intention of upsetting them, especially when the real reason is most likely to further market myself. Then again sometimes the best artists/designers are strange or even hostile people and considering how offensive and misinformed most criticism is online today I can understand the frustration.

I found the following post on the gamefaqs Halo Reach board:

“It's a shame Bungie has such a superioty complex and won't admit their mistakes and fix their broken game.”

I think this poster said this 'criticism' mainly to upset people who think the game isn't broken and hopes to incite a flame war. Regardless of his intent if he or she was talking about a game I made I would feel like telling him to make his own damn game.
