Hi all,
Good podcast! That was my first and I need to go back and listen to the others.
A couple of notes on goldbox.
Nathan mentions that Pool of Radiance was the first from SSI using tactical combat but wizards crown preceded that game by a couple of years - I think 1987. At that time SSI was writing tactical war games and as I recall Wizards Crown was the first RPG done by the teams who usually did the war games.
It was a good game but quite hard. Different monsters were more immune to different weapon types so you needed a pretty wide mix of classes in your 8 man party.
But to be fair Tunnels of Doom had 3d perspective exploration, 2d tactical combat and even mini-games way back in 1982. Now there was a great RPG. The only flaw with Tunnels of Doom was that it happened to have been developed for the TI-99 computers which died pretty soon afterward. I always wished Kevin Kenny would have ported it to C64 or Apple. Then more people would know about this classic.
