Yes, if you stand directly in front of it, you can see the light at the bottom of the screen and it does have a weird pattern in the center on pure white screens. Otherwise, though, I highly recommend DLP for most situations.
Yeah, I have a 50" DLP myself. If you want to go big, DLP is still the cheapest way and provides excellent HD quality. Heck, I've been seeing 73" DLP's for less than $1000. You can't beat that!
I know, I llike mine so much .. 8 more inchs isnt much but .. man I love the big screen look. The only real big downsize I can see is the color wheel, but 3 years and No problems for me. I have heard of some complaints with warped screens, but it sounds like people who try set stuff up top are causeing there own problems, they build um so light there is no strength up top to hold anything. The only time i hate when tech goes down in price.. after i bought mine.. heheh

They must have used a projector in order to be able to place all the coins as pixels on the black tarp. The math is spot on so there is a computer pointing out the right pixels for them.
Impressive feat!
Yes Im sure the projector was used to show them where to move stuff. If you notice the coins show several colors, purple, silver, etc.. thats the DLP projector most likely. There really is no reason to use the projector at all other than as a guide. many years ago when painting a kids room I used a overhead projector, just printed a image on a transparncy and projected on the wall in the size I wanted (video game related!), got some cheap school paint (pantra?) as it was really bright. Worked excellent. I had plans to do the same with a modern projector, b ut when I got my 65" tv the Projector setup was sold.. Projector home theaters are pretty impressive with no light rooms, the size cant be beat, and video games are awsomeon them. But when the there is light... they are just so-so. even the best.. I Built a hom made one 10years ago and slowly improved my seup untill about 3 years ago when the LED DLP 65" tv's where $1000.... couldnt pass it up.. My 55" LCD is a bit nicer on pure white (notice it on the 360 load screen, but how often is the screen pure white? video game load screens is about it).. but that DLP is pretty much as good on anything else.. and LCD's in the 65" area are.. well.. car prices... if you can find um that big. ick!
Don't know how they did it, but it's supposedly real coins they used, so nothing was rendered. I tend to agree with Mark that they probably had to do some separate modeling in order to know where to place things, though.
Did they actually place the quarters in each frame, which is very hard to imagine. Or, is it all computer rendering based on graphics they already had available?

This has to be rendered onto the black tarp using the quarter image... nobody has this much time to kill.
Amazing, not only the time to do it, but then having the imagination to do the 2d mario to 3d and morf to other stuff.
I KNOW why i fail at some things.. When I first looked i was saying to msylef "why? how much work that must be" but as I watched I was loveing every minute of it.. There is the Spark I have yet to capture. I think i have the creative side, but he work side is lacking big time..
