Anybody playing this? I was a HUGE Wastelands fan, and the fallout games are the spirtual successors so to speak. Fallout 3 was such an incredible game (IMHO) all the little details, every item in the world had value, small value some, but value. Discovering all the littel nooks and crannies.

Vegas has all the old charm, and some new more colorfull areas. I myslef didnt care much for the Vegas part of Vegas (seems silly I know). Thankfully im 3/4 through (levels it caps at 30) and have yet to touch much on it. The shacks, huts, caves, and nooks are the parts I like the most. Finding a factory that is still run by robots (that must kill you!) or notes left by dead people. The vaults all changed over time, the mutants running a funny radio station...

I know some do not like the FPS style. keep in mind the VATTS system, it can make combat a bit easier for the old turn based people. Unfortnatly it has some very real flaws. In fallout3, it was almost god mode, in Vegas its gimped (compared to 3). And when your action points run out, you either do the chicken run, or blaze away old FPS style while they build up. VATTS would have worked better if it would have been just turned into a turn based combat, instead of half and half.

They have added some new, ammo "crafting". I found it worthless at beginging of game, and find it a bore at end game where you do need to use the AP rounds (which are in short supply to buy) so you need to craft them. Its a neat idea that seems to much like busy work to me.

Also companions, you can have one humanoid and one none. Any fo these make the game much easier in combat, and to haul your treasures as each can hold basicly the same amount as you! The downside is the same with most AI controled units, they walk in front of you (and i hate to see me crit shooting my teamate!). They run after mobs when you dont want. They can clear entire parts of game without your help. You will see the slow mo crit shot death scene, but have no idea where it was so you cant loot it.

Overall I find it more of the same (fallout3) which is a GREAT thing. In the last couple of years I can only pick a few Standout games. Fallout 3 (and vegas), Demons Souls, Minecraft... after that nothing but Left 4 Dead and L4D2 have rally got any real playtime out of me. not to say there where not many good games.. Dragons Age, Mass Effect, etc.. but FALLOUT is one I can easily say was GREAT to me.

Oh I must mention, Fallout 3 had many many bad bugs, none that broke the game, but many that frustrated. Vegas is said to be worse, but fortnatly I havent encounterd as many as others. Vegas has been realitivly stable for me and in the countless hours playing I have crashed maybe 3 times. Much less the Fallout3.

melee seems to rule in this

melee seems to rule in this game, I know it seems some good armour, and a rebar club.. Veronica or even Boone (he is far to valuble with a rifle to do it, but what the heck) are total baddA44. I snuck into Blackrock Mt and got the fast travel location, snuck out. Had those two, power fist and rebar, i popped in top at Blackrock.. never fired a shot, watched those two bea the heck out of like 12 mobs.. (sadly I missed the mutant on the radio.. just a dead body by the time I got to it).

I know if (more like when) i start over I will be melee.

The ReBarb Club

I'm finding that the ReBarb club works very well for me. I always keep it in good condition......I wonder how good it will be in later levels.

yes the repair thing is a

yes the repair thing is a PERK, Jury Rigged Is name i believe. it requires a couple things to unlock it, sorry No idea what, I generaly max lockpicking/science and Repeair first so i can unlock and hack anything, and then speech, as so many options for speech in game (as well as barter).
Keep in mind repairing takes- the item you want repaired and the same item again to repair it with. So you need 2 cowboy repeaters, one selected (in pipboy) hit the r key and if you have another it will show up under it, click on it and the first one will go up in repair. With jusry rigged, and rifle will repair any other rifel, and hand gun, any other handgun, any energy rifle will repair any other energy rifle.... etc....

IN FO3 i used grenades and mines alot, I didnt in this game and skipped it (explosives) was one spot that it hurt m on.. but so far it feels ok to hav skipped it.

RE-rolling... LUCK-LUCK-LUCK... it plays such a huge part of this game (crits, gambleing, etc) And while I find Energy weapons weak, thy are not totally gimped. I'm sure you can make do with them no problem. They are a bit sparse to start. You can get a cowboy repeater almost right away if your lucky and they are pretty dang good weapon to start with. Sadly the only HUGE negative of energy is the fact you have to get quite a bit into game for any amount to suw up.. and that seems like a huge drawback to me (besides the fact they are weak).

I have the Anti Material Rifle, The Plasma one (thats special), the pistol (mariah), The psuh back named glove (Veronica is a bada$$ with it), and the Named Sniper Rifle (i use this one the most).

The 38 is nice to setup in, its just that Novac has the drop box right below you, the vendor is in the dino, just quicker i find (unless swapping companions).

I didnt play any this weekend :( sadly I checked out the changes in WoW and sorta got sucked in again.. evil game...

Nope, no Vehicles...

...in this one either. Sad too, as there would be huge potential if you could drive similar to how Borderlands did it between towns. Now that I finished COD Black Ops Campaign I'm going back to Vegas and try to find the Anti-Material Rifle. I don't want to advance the main story anymore until I find some better weapons and armor. I also want to advance my ability to repair my own stuff. I have 100 skill points assigned to it but still can't repair anything, except for minor items. I guess I need a perk for this.

Cheers

I'm guessing there aren't any

I'm guessing there aren't any vehicles in this one either? Man, I was really hoping they'd add some. Imagine the Mad Max-like possibilities...

10 hours in

and it's been mostly basic. I usually play the nice guy route and I'm just about at the point where I guess I gotta start choosing sides. I'm about to become enemies with a few groups of people.....but I guess it was only a matter of time.
My only gripe is that the game does crash every once in a while. No lost game saves or anything. But I hope for a patch soon.

I made the mistake of rolling

I made the mistake of rolling a character with energy weapons, which it seems are pretty much useless (at least in the early game). I like rifles better anyway, so I might end up re-rolling.

Interesting Perspective

I hadn't really thought about using Novac as my home base since I got into the strip. Since I haven't chosen sides yet, I guess I might want to move to Novac in the event my Penthouse within the casino is taken away if I nuke House.

I think I'm close to level 20 and you know what I found is my best weapon is melee with the brass knuckles. I need to adopt the way you play with respect to only carrying a couple weapons though.

I can beat the deathclaws, but only with the upgraded 10mm machine gun I have.

I have to find that repair perk you're talking about.

A friend of mine at work says there is a weapon called the "anti-material" rifle that fires .50mm rounds and is a one-shot kill for pretty much everything. I'm checking the strategy guide for that one.

Cheers

Those that haven't gotten there yet, the Vegas Strip is awesome!!!!

I also played it on Hardcore and the hardest setting. Sadly I'm not a fan of the HARDCORE mode in this game. There is free rad free water at Goodsprings at any time its just a fast travel away, Sleep, I like this part of it, but the non hardcore has the Well rested perk, and it was always worth doing so that part I did already. Eating, Im a silly bugger and do the achivements so the "heal 10,000damage with food" is on my list (for those who wonder, drinking water heals back hitpoints, and its free at several spots, so food really inst required, but in Hardcore mode you do have to eat). The one spot HARDCORE mode is "real" is the ALL THINGS have wieght, shells, empty shells, everything. This does make carrying 3 guns and ammo a real chore if you want to pick anything up. but that is almost negated as I am alwasy fast traveling to good spring (killing the gekos!) and drinking, then hit the drop box and send my extra stuff to NOVAC (I never did much at lucky 38 other than swap companions for quests). Novac was my base, drop box, room and vendor where all close (as was fast travel pop in, and at night you got a bonus, kill a few ghouls).

Personally I keep 2 weapons (both guns, energy weapons got the NERF bat bigtime in vegas compared to FO3) both rifles, the Hunting Rifle and Cowboy repeater are pretty soild if unspectacilar weapons, fairly easy to come by at start of game. And both in sneak mode do major critical damage on headshots. I used both almost the whole game. Yes some of the "special Weapons" are pretty sweet too, but hard to repair untill (and if?) you get the perk that lets you use amost any weapon of same type to repair. Repaired weapons is key to good DPS in the game (i think) and Reapirs are huge Caps from NPC's, so you need to learn that skill ASAP. I know I read a comparsions of Weapons (not locations, i dont want spoilers) and I'm level 30, have about 80 locations found and I have like 4 of the 10 "cool " weapons.. I wonder where the others are? I'm at a delemia at the moment. I have all but finished the quests I can do by the factions I chose, and the MAIN quest is all but done also.... Do i search for more location? So i hunt down more specail weapons (like a needle in haystck without spoilers really) or do i just finish? I had thouht about "cleaning" up the legion just for fun (err maybe the final quest will have me do that?). And I knwo there are a few Powder gangers in the Prison yet hate me, but are still alive. OH.. AND THE DEATCLAWS in the one spot (sorry try not to give out to many spoilers) Even with max gun skill, AP rounds I have a tough time with the DEATHCLAWS... I hate um. Nightkin, Supermutants, Legendary creatures... all go down.. DEATHCLAWS seem to slaughter my little band on a 50/50 basis, i win some they win some..

I am disapointed Im done.. and the DLC is 360 only (for now).. no more vegas fo me shortly :(
