Finishing games

We all (well most of us I think) hav lives that wont allow the time we used to dedicate to gameing. I am picking up Black OPs today as a buch of guys got a dedicated server going (we all chipped in) and I spose as I paid I should play. I started to think. I have recently purchased (as in last few weeks) 5 or 6 games from Gamefly (alan Wake, Darksiders, WET, magna Carta, Kane an Lynch2) used. At least 10 games on STEAM, FALLOUT:Vegas being hte one I have been hammering at the most. And today I got RISIN on steam..

Now Im going to buy another new game...... I have not touched but about 3 of the games I have bought in 2 weeks. Alan Wake for about 30 minutes (disapointed with it, may never play again) Fallout (ok, this one I have about 50 hours in) and Minecraft (still) and about 10 minutes of WET (complicated controls, no idea if will play again).

how many games do you guys (and gals) FINISH? I mean games with endings? I'm a RPG addict so "most" of those I finish, but there is a big "IF" on that. I finish them if they dont start me into grinding, as In mindless non story drivine levels for no reason. MMORPG games give me all the grinding I can handle, I dont want to do it in single player.

It got me to thinking (and this topic has been discussed before), What games ahve you FINISHED in the last few years?

ME- embaressed, not many. Dragon AGE, Drakenguard (spelling?), DEMONS SOULS (ps3, buy it if you dont own it!) Battelfield Bad Company2 (single player) Modern Warefare 2 (all 4 hours of the single player, sad).. and Soon Fallout:Vegas (could ahve inished already, but game ends with end of main questline).

so few, and I have bought at least 100+ games in the last year.... should i question my spending habits?

Alas I game online with the 360! I wish I had the computer version but I can no longer afford to maintain a gaming PC unfortunately. I just rock the windows xp laptop for golden age gaming now.

Sounds like there are gobs of new cool tweaks and features for L4D2. I don't actually own the first game, I just played it a ton with a former roommate, but I think you've convinced me, Epic Beard Man, to purchase this game. I really like cooperative games, they come few and far between, good ones at least.

Honestly the only thing I don't like about L4D is that Half-Life's story was unfinished when Valve started making them...

I am a HUGE fan of online FPS, but with age comes the slower reaction times... hence me vs you is not such a "even" battel anymore if "you" are young with wipper snapper reaction times :)

I'm not sure everybody will get Left4Dead... It really goes against how most Online FPS are played.. I know most are team vs team.. but seldom does anybody use any real teamwork. I knwo when me and a freind of mine are both on Teamspeak (or ins same room) and we go into any of these games (MW, COD:BO) and pay as a pair.. we OWN... I mean it.. we are alwasy #1-2 on score.. but we play to support each other.

L4D is all about 4 people playing TOGETHER, there is no score (well there is sorta one at end) its ALL ABOUT getting across map with most health and all players.. killing 10,000 zombies, but taking massive damage, putting your fellow players in harms way... all not good. Far to many players I see play , run way ahead of everybody else, a "special infected" gets them and they quit the game.. mad...

Some hints.. if you are not 10-20 feet from another player.. you are in harms way.. SPECIAL infected singel out loners.. and most when they attack you, if they get you.. you are 100% helpless, you need another player to "help" you...This is one spot the "standard" fps player will piss you off to no end.. he wont understand 4 players is 100% better then 3 or 2.. This game is all about keeping everybody alive for Firepower. the enemies come from all sides, you ahve to "assume" somebody is getting your back while you protect the front. Also another reason many dont "get" the game.. 4 people covering 4 directions.. if player 4 has nothing to shot, he leave his "direction" and shoots where zombies are comming from... then you get ganged from that direction as he was BORED....

Stick toghter at all times.. The game "tempts" you to leave the safety fo group by placing items randomely around the map, it encourages you to explore. My motto in video games, greed and speed kill far more than anything.. and its true on this game. Long time L4D players who know each other will "rush a map" good strategy if EVERYBODY knows every inch of the mpa, knows thats the plan and sticks toghter.. so in real world game...it fails almost all the time.. Rushing a map means you shoot less, have less "panic events" (panic event is a zombie rush, the game increases them the better you do and slows them down the worse..) to deal with. YOu can with a GREAT group finsih some maps in a couple minutes (most maps normally take 10-15 minutes.. and most Missions? are 4-5 maps... so one game can take 30 minutes for FAST people or rouhgly an hour for almost anybody else.

dang there is so much to talk about this game ( when you like it .. you can discuss it for hours)...

Stick toghther, crouching makes AIM much better. When a player is attacked by a SPECIAL infected, you cant hurt the player, spray him with bullets.. you wont hurt him.. Normal zombies.. AIM you can hit the players. When specials have a player, PUNT then shoot... You have a "push" key that knocks all zombies back and stuns um .. USE IT whenever a SPECIAL (except TANK and CHARGER) has a player, this knocks the infected off (and stops damage) then shoot it.. just shooting, lets it damage a player while you kill it.. Of course your range to said player matters. Crouch and aim if long ways away.. So many will shot form a mile away while running... you wont hit crap... The "PUSH" knockback thing.. use it alot ( but remeber in L4D2 you can only do so many times before you slow down (l4D one is ulmited).

Tanks... get some distance.... try to not be between you and teamates (no shot for them)... try scatter a bit.. so everybody can shoot it. IF its after YOU... RUN, let others kill it.. DO NOT get cornered.. If its focusing on others, melee weapons make very short work of it.. much faster than guns, but much more dangerous. If cars or dumpsters are around....WATCH out the tank uses um to crush you... if you are hit by one.. you are DOWN... NOOB mistake i see the most often...

if sombody goes down... try help um up.. but its best if TWO people do it.. one knocks undead back one helps um up... if you are person down.. you can still shoot... if one, just one zombie hits you when being helped up, it resets the "help up time" ... not good.. if in a panic event.. try keep the zombies off um, but if helping um dmages you and them.. (to many zombies) kill the zombie rush, then halp um up... they dont die very quickly when down (unless being pounded by zombies).. people who are down will cry like little girls and complain you dont help um "right now" but better to "judge" what works best..

Specials all make noise.. so you know they are around... My personal hint.. try be in as open an area as possilbe.. gives you the best view, and more time to react to them... CHARGER... if you hear him, make sure you are all not grouped (he can knock you all down).. Spitter.. her her.. make sure you are not trapped anywhere by zombies (she likes to attack when you are).. get to a location you can move some in.. she spits goo down that damges you if you stand in it.. and if you are knocking off or in a crner.. you might get stuck in it.. the longer you stand the more damge it does... like 1 sec 1 hp, 2 sec 2hps, 3 sec 4hps, 5 sec 8 hps.. you get the idea...

SPECIAL INFECTED-
Tank- think HULK.. he SMASH, can throw rocks (with amazing accuracy) and throw cars and dumpsters.. FIRE is good... but it will take 1 minute to kill.. he will kill you before that... just takes LOTS of shots to kill... the PUSH command does not work on.

Charger-He charges at you from long ways away really fast.. he will grab the first person he hits (and other will be stunned.. so you cant shot him for a bit, you have to get up) and that person he WILL NOT LET GO, you ahve to shoot him, you cant PUSH him off... he does HUGE damge to anybody he is pounding into ground..

Jockey- he will jump on you and ride you. can be knocked off with a PUSH.. very fast, small and annoying.. he doesnt do huge damge, but if he rides somebody out of view.. its bad..

Spitter- she spits goo, she likes to do it when you are blinded by a smoker or boomer.. or when you are trapped by a zombie rush.. the longer you stand in her spit the more dmage you take.. Once she spits she is really slow.. easy to shoot.. you can stun with a PUSH...

Smoker- has a long toung... he can pull you from long distanes.. if he pulls you all the way to him he does good damage... but just pulling you.. not alot.. he has smoke comming form him so easiest one to spot. When a smoker dies he leave a smoke cload, hard to see.

Boomer- he vomits on you.. if you are hit it triggers a PANIC event and all zombies beeline to whoever has puke on them, Also PUKE makes it hard to see... Boomer can be PUSHED back so you can get range.. If you shoot a boomer he explodes (puke) so never shot one untill its not close to you.

HUNTER- they crawl on all 4's and can jump huge distacnes.. they do alot fo damage if on you. can be pushed off.

Standard Zombie- low damge.. dont get to excited if its beating on you... if its more than a few it adds up, so keep form getting to many on you.. thye also throw off aim when they hit you... annoying... headshots are instant kill.. body may take 2-3 shots depending on weapon.

Jockeys are the WORST they jump on you and "ride" you.. they can stear you... but you can sorta fight back.. you can control your character a little... try keep him from getting you out of view.. try keep him from zig zagging you... still target is easier to hit (to many players just let him do whatever as they cant shoot, so they dont try do anything)..

healing.. you get one med pack at start and one when you finish (which is basicly the one for start of next round).. so you gotta use um wisely.. if you get knocked down and picked back up you will still have health.. but ONCE you are knocked down.. your health will be red.. this is called BLEED out.. you will slowely lose health.. many player will heal right away when in BLEED out.. dont.. as long as you are above 40% you walk and run full speed.. under 40% you are slower.. but still not bad if teamates dont run away from you and wait for you (good ones do, bad ones leave ya). You can be (normally) knocked down2-3 times.. when you get up and the Screen is Black & White.. heal.. you will die if you go down.. Im not sauying to wait till you are B&W.. im saying dont heal on the first knockdown.. only playing awhile will you get to judge when.. NEVER USE 2 packs in a SAFE ROOM.. its bad.. you just used somebody elses pack ( there is one for each of you).. if sombody leaves one.. then its ok.. WAY to many bad players will use two and leave you (or another team mate screwed)..
Also with healing, its said ( no idea if its true but from my playing it seems to be) if all 4 of you make it to safe room.. if you heal each other (instead of yourslef) the game spawns extra med packs.. it seems to be the case.. the game will also spawn extra ones if you are sucking bad.. if you are playing so-so the extra ones you get from healing each other are a big help.. but getting others (people you dont know) to do this... not so easy..

learn to use Melee weapons.. they are a timing thing, but VERY effective...

threre are lots of "pick ups" med kits, heal you, pills are same as med kits.. but the health slowly drains out (never leave one behind.. slam it if you ahve one and pick up the extra one).. Adrenialin shots... they speed up everything you do and make pushing thorugh zombies easy.. but they make the screen wierd.. I personly hate um.. I only use um when in hectic fights i need to pick sombody up or use a med kit quick... when useing adrenialin you can pick up or use a med kit 2X faster... very handy for quick help on firend or even yourslef. Also DEFIBBS... pick it up if you dont have a med pack (or are so good you neer need one).. they will shock a dead player back to life with 50% health. many players if at 20-30% health will have other players kil them, and shcok um back (more health) at end of rounds..
There are also Pipe bombs... bombs that make noise . when thrown all infected will chase um.. very handy in those "rush" areas.. Mollies... (flames) great if you get a rush and you know where all the infected are commign from, throw one in front of um and watch um all burn.. Normal Infected die instantly in flames.. and all others it does damage over time.. Mollies are a "last Ditch" if you are getting bum rushed.. thorw it at your feet.. its going to burn you too, but it does way less damge then 30 zombies beating on you (use at own risk, other players dont like this, even if they would take less dmage). there are alos gas cans (same as mollie, shoot it) that you can move around map and use like that... porpane tanks.. explode.. good for stunning big infected (tanks) or blowing up regular ones.. AND my favorite, BILE BOMBS.. gren jar that if you throw it at any infected it coats them and makes all other infected attack them.. or if its on ground ... it just make sthem forget you and run to it.. These work really great for a couple of the finalies... (alarm runs, you will know when you do um a couple times)..

I presonally keep a bile bomb for the Dark Carnval run to the arena and for the shopping mart alarm run (throw it on bottom floor about half through run, simple... without it very hard).

Learn your weapons... the starter weapons are bad.. but learn to use um.. any range makes um almost worthless, dont spray way off mobs.. wait till they closer...
2nd tier weapons.. we will all have our favorites.. personally Im a AK-47 man.. not very acurate. but one shot one kill.. m16 is close second.. much more acurate but take more shots to kill stuff. Pump and riot shotgun... AWSOME against tank and anything close.. worthless at range.. nice thing about 2nd tier shotguns.. you can almsot load and shot at same time.. shoot and hammer reload.. never not be shooting... downside limited shots.. To use shotgun you gottta let um get up close. Hunting rifles... if you can line um up it goes throu um all... but slow reloads and limited ammo makes it my least liked guns.. good players can use um to great effect..

gun add ons.. laser sites.. makes all guns way more acurate.. but a shot gun with a laser site.. worthless.. a tier 1 gun... worthless. though there is somthing to be said for a tier one sub machine gun (650 bullets) there downside is horrilbe acrurcy... with a laser site they are better, have alot of bullets.. but take more to down a mob.. there is alos Special ammo.. fire bullets or explosive rounds.. Fire bullets ignite any undead (damge over time) or explosive rounds splatter reg infected and stun Special infected.. very good for anything BUT TANK.. only get 50 so use sparingly.. my i just spray um out (50 extra rounds, doesnt use normal amm0)

Levels... there are 6 levels of L4D2 all with 4-5 maps.. thre are variations... In hard Rain... you play 3 maps, but you cross the mps to get gas.. and come back throuhg same maps (with rain and lots of water) on rooftops.. so any supplies you use on way in.. are gone on way back.. so use sparingly.. there are more than normal..

All maps have a "end" panic event.. normaly with 2 tanks.. you "set up" in a spot with lots of ammo and such.. ther is womt type of "switch" a radio call, a door you open.. etc.. that triggers it all.. so before you start it.. get setup.. place gas cans around map, heal if you need... know where the pick ups are... most maps have good spot to do this..

Some maps have ALARM runs.. you trigger an alarm which means NON STOP infected (and specials) you can hunker down and wait till they quit comming, you ahve to fight your way to the alarm.. these spots BILE bombs and Pipe bombs can make this easy... stragglers that fall behind here are very very bad... go back to help and you add lots and lots of infected.. but rush ahead to shut it off.. they will most likely be dead by time you get back.

Cars with flashing lights.. these are cars with alarm systems.. shoot um, bump um.. you have a car alarm.. as in tons of zombies coming to see who is stealing the car :)

Deep water-instant death.. DO NOT let a charger charge you into water...
ledges... you slip you fall off ( but hang on) same as going down to infected.. you lose your "standard health" and switch to bleed out.. be carefull on ledges.. players and infected all have mass, you do not pass throuhg each other.. easy to bump a friend off.. Also SMOKERS can pull you off very easy...
Falling.. jumping off tall stuff is almost instant DOWN.. not dead but down.. really high will kill you.

Im sure I missed lots .. if you are still reading..
play it solo (the bots are great as long as diffuclty isnt high..) they wont lead you so you will ahve to figure out maps... they use lights, and spray painted signs to direct you.. the bots will also chime in with comments on where to go.. The first map is kinda ugly as they give you pistols only .. (you can carry 2). and its throuhg a burning building and ledges.. it was tricky the first times..
Oh reloading.. its faster if you do it before totally out of ammo.. This game will ruin you for FPS.. you will be reloading every free second you have, in every game now..

And if you ever want help.. private match (2 people and 2 bots works fine) I love to play the game and will gladly play a match or two with ya..

item son map show up in certain spots alot.. so can show ya the best places to look. shortcuts.. tricks.. etc.. Im not the best L4D player.. but not to bad.

again STEAM ID "EPIC BEARD MAN"

No issues with Facebook or Twitter, though it took me time

I never bothered with Myspace even though I gave AA a token presence on there just in case. It was too juvenile and ugly for my tastes. I resisted Facebook initially, but it had more aesthetic sensibility and seemed like a reasonable "personal" offshoot of LinkedIn, which I was (and am) a user of. I think it's easy to see the fascination with Facebook. In any case, I resisted Twitter for quite some time. I just didn't get it. However, I forced myself to use it and I think I get it now. It particularly shines on mobile platforms like my iPhone. Whereas Facebook to me really needs the full desktop experience, Twitter is actually enhanced on a mobile platform. With that said, depending upon how many people you follow, it can be overwhelming, but it does have its usefulness as a quick way to find things out. It's also useful for someone naturally verbose such as myself to be more economical with my thoughts. I have very specific ways I personally use Facebook and Twitter, and it's nice that you can feed all kinds of things each way with them as well.

I myslef do not see any appeal to Twitter/facebook/Myspace and above all TXTING!

For the life of me, I don't understand Twitter! "Hey, I'm doing my nails," or "At my favorite coffee shop drinking a cappucino." I like the way the AA crew use Twitter (as evidenced by the Twitter feed on AA); actual interesting links and info, but otherwise? Now Facebook/Myspace I understand, although I have no interest in these.

This can be a problem as most ONLINE FPS players dont like to share, and work as a team.

I just bought "Left 4 Dead 2" on Steam for $5 (!!!!) last week! I haven't even installed it yet, but I figure I'll get to play it this weekend. After reading your raves about this game, I'm more psyched to start playing it than I would have been! My Steam account: rowdyrob3d

I'm an entirely single-player gamer. The mayhem and randomness of multiplayer games (not to mention the rudeness) confuses me and puts me off. People I don't know jumping around everywhere and picking me off before I've had a chance (and then mocking my "noobness") actually feels LESS personal to me. Everyone else around seems like super-skilled bots to me. I admit my experiences are limited in this area, though.

I too play 99% of the time in

I too play 99% of the time in single player or offline co-op (enjoying Plants vs. Zombies on the Xbox 360 a great deal with Christina lately), but I do enjoy when I jump online now and again, so it's nice to have the option. I'm not sure how much dev time adding multiplayer really takes from single player (they're probably separate parts of the dev team, frankly), but it really can't be subtracted from the value of the game. Just because you don't use some component of something doesn't mean it can be unbundled and all of a sudden be cheaper. It's a combined development process anyway.

I'm actually in a classic catch 22, where, since my skills are weak and my time low, any amount of quality single player is going to be very appealing to me, even if it means that someone else can finish in four hours. For me, that four hours can last weeks or months, so my perception of value in that case is quite different.

I myslef do not see any appeal to Twitter/facebook/Myspace and above all TXTING! if i have a phone in my hand, why would I not call somebody? I do know there are areas where a silent message is better then a talking call. Emergancies, etc.. but the problem is 99% of all txts i see are "I'm bored", "where you at", etc.. worthless waste of time. Whne cell phones first came out i had a buddy I road around with alot, his GF would call and ask him where he was (no reason), or on the way home he would call and say "im on my way home"... nothing more.. and in less then 5 minutes she would know that anyways... What was the point? let the guy thumping his wife get out the back door before he got home? I like to comunicate, and have sent a txt or two in my life (all for silly reason) but I for the life of me dont understand the Txt when we are in the same building thing.. Txting to say "call me I have a question".. call me, I will answer (of course that is a whole other thing.. not answering phone becuase of who calls and such) any friend of mine (good or bad) that calls gets an answer (except when Im driving in town traffic (another sore spot with me)).. We used to not answer phones of people who wouldnt say who they where (block call ID) now we pick and chose who we want to talk to... have we became so busy we cant even talk.. or is it just that so much converstaion has become worthless we want to skip some, even from people we know?

But back to the Singel Player game. I used to be the same way, a online only game, why? I want to play when I want, how I want. But once I played some DOOM 4 player on a lan, when Quake went online, and ever since ONLINE gameing is improtant to me as the single player part (err, depending ont he game). I must admit that the online experiance is degrading, not the qulity of the games, but the quality of the people playing them. When voice became a littel more common, I thought it was a huge breakthrough... it made the online coop game so much better. Nowdays (almost alwasy on 360) i mute it.. I'm not very annoyed when it comes to $hit slinging, in fact a good put down (rude or not) is fun to hear, even about myslef. But the fact that HUMANS seem to think pushing boundries and have ZERO self ristrant when annoymous.. the racial slurs, and personal attacks are all to common.. and that I cant stand. And its got horrible.. and jsut seems to get worse and worse.
Personally, if you look at my Steam account (epic beard man) you will see I'm a Left4Dead2 addict, i play at least an hour every day, many times much more. Its what i consider the perfect ONLINE game, its not me against you, its me and you teamed up against THEM! this game rewards teamwork, and in the harder levels kills the "lone gunman" as quick as you can blink. This can be a problem as most ONLINE FPS players dont like to share, and work as a team. this can also frustrate us who liek to work and help each other.. we are dying non stop becuase one idiot cant figure out TEAMWORK. I also spend hours creating maps for the game (that I never release) just creating them is satistifying to me.. I do like the MW COD games.. and you cant argue with sales. But the length of single player... they shouldbe ashamed.. games up to only recently, even if they where online (multiplayer is argubly the big draw of the COD, MW games) they made some attempt at singel player.. but in the last few years its became acceptable to make a game, list it as haveing a single player aspect and makeing it last 3-4 hours.... And we reward it by buying the game. I will be honest I only bought BO as the guys I game with wanted to get a dedicted server going so I chipped in.. and kinda need the game to play.. after MW2 and beating it on hard setting in like 5 hours.. I vowed no more..yet i cave in everytime. Honestly I would rather play Serouis Sam, Pain, Borderlands, etc.. the ovr the top cartoony rush from every side Shooters.. They are kinda popcorn and pop shooters.. not long term grind out like the COD games (unlocks and such online)..And again, I do like the COD games... I think they are pretty excellent games, Im just not as easygoing ot overlook the singel playe campigns ar way to short, they pump a new one out evry 6-8 months (one of the reasons the SP is so short, no time to work on it, that is my opinion). As long as we keep buying , why should they spend more time making?
the current online FPS are just getting to real for my tastes.. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy them alot. REALISTIC is amazing, but I do sometimes have to wonder if some of the "crazies" might have some slight shred of truth in the whole video game violence thing..... All games basicly are the ELIMINATION of something, its just we are getting so close to movie/real life. I now I can tell the difference.. Im the guy who cant get enough of the worst Gore movies, but have no taste for the real stuff (blood draws, real injuries) I once lost it when they drew blood from me (thankfully a wate paper basket was close).

geez i get way off track to easy... brought up topics that have been covered a million times...

But Matt you aren't a member

But Matt you aren't a member of the Youtube Husk Generation!

I think there are still a lot of gamers out there who value the single player experience more, but that number gets less everyday doesn't it? I feel like the media at large is sort of pushing us in this direction. Check your twitters, facebook statuses, memorize everyone's life, go online and vent on strangers, or go online and live via your WoW character... it's all very unsettling to me now. These online games, particularly these FPS juggernauts, they entertain people in a manner very similar to sports. I could be wrong, but when I play them I get the same rush as I did playing competitive basketball back in school. And don't get me started on some of the trash talk I've heard from children...

It's an entirely different kind of entertainment than the single player experience, which is the one that stays with me, because I love storytelling.

I am sure we are in the minority these days but I have no interest in multiplayer or online and yes I have tried it, it did nothing for me. the fact that I am a bit of a control freak does not exactly help either, people running around thinking for themselves making in game decision without my input? No thanks, it is between me and the game! Ok maybe this all sounds a little sad or pathetic but then again the thought of the majority of games focusing on multiplayer with little or no thought to the single player experience scares the crap outta me.
