Inspired by all of Gandalf's work, I decided to try Lord of the Rings Online, another free-to-play MMORPG. The interface is even more WOW-like than D&D Online was; the transition was easy to make, though it does lack some of the smoothness of Blizzard's beast--not surprising considering they have some 10 million players who amount to play-testers. At any rate, the graphics are much more realistic than WOW, which has that highly stylized cartoony-look that puts some people off. The graphics here are more reminiscent of something like Oblivion or Dragon Age.

The gimmick, as far as I can tell, is that all the quests and such are part of the big narrative familiar to anyone who loves Tolkien (which I do very much). The introduction lasts for a couple hours and gets you up to about level 6. The pacing feels slow, though, since you have to do a lot of running around a map just big enough to make you feel annoyed. The quests so far have been the usual kill X of this, gather Y of that, etc., but there were some fun moments protecting people. I really like the in-game cutscenes; makes you feel like you're at an amusement park and watching like dramas play out all around you.

Like most MMOs, this one is probably ten times more fun with an actual group than solo, but the content seems much more solo-friendly than D&D Online was (at least from what little I've seen). I've heard great things about the community, but haven't met anyone as of yet.

At any rate, I'll probably be popping on to it every once and awhile until I decide whether it's worth making any kind of serious commitment. I created a champion human character named Nettlebur on the Dwarrowdelf server if anyone would like to adventure with me (yeah right!).

I really think that playing WOW so much has spoiled me! I can't help but compare every little thing in these games to wow and think, "Oh, wow does that so much better, etc." It's irritating, and I wish I could do a better job of approaching these games with an open mind.

Even though it's free to play

Even though it's free to play you still need an account with turbine. The account name will not be an e-mail address and the password will be what you assign it to be. Your Turbine account info will be different from your Turbine Forum access information. Be certain to click the Turbine account button on the loader and what you log into your turbine account with will be what you log into LOTRO with.

May just be down for work on

May just be down for work on servers, happens often on MMORPG's. Keep in mind an TURBINE account and a LOTR account may be differnt things. I dont remeber when I set mine up so Not 100% sure. I am sorry you hit this snag. I do know you need the correct version for you area.

Wow - amazing.... NOT.......

Downloaded and installed it and it wouldn't accept my Username Password combo (yes I typed them correctly case sensitive) so I requested a reset from the login menu.
Got the email changed the password and still the game refuses to let me log in. This is very similar to my previous experience trying out an MMORPG where I had to download update upon update upon update and finally gave up.
Okay let's solve this password thing...

Okay created another account with my other email address and I get the exact same thing below:

Okay perhaps localized to US only - probably..... Checking European accounts? Ah European website detects account and says start playing with new version. Download LOTR setup files again. Deinstall prior version - reinstall the latest version..... FAIL again.... Uninstall.

Can't be bothered. Games like this are better played on consoles. Far less hassles....I just loathe this shite one has to endure when trying to play some games on PC.

Kinships

Okay, here is what I have found about Kinships. When you create them you have select either a racial, or mixed race kinship and it must have at least 8 members, otherwise it will be disbanded within 24 hours. I don't know if this means 8 individual users, or 8 characters, but it's not too expensive to try as it's only 5 silver 12 copper to buy so I don't think it's too much to try out. Let me know what everyone thinks.

I don't want to step on any

I don't want to step on any toes, but would you like to start a Kinship called Armchair Arcade? I would be more than willing to help set it up, even if it never gets too huge. Please let me know. I will research how much it costs in game and how many players we need to start it, if you wish.

Okay I will mark you on my

Okay I will mark you on my friends list. If you want to try for a kinship let me know. I don't know if there is a level requirement on it, but a kinship for your website would be very cool in my eyes.
