Three for the Road

Ok folks, sorry about getting this edition out a day late.. I actually overshot my bandwidth quota mid-week (for the second time in six months) and had to lay-low. Next weeks edition should be out on time.. barring getting the boot by Comcast.

Anyway, This week we are going to look at three remakes / reinterpretations of somewhat classic games. I've tested all of these under Windows XP SP3 and they worked fine.. so your Vista/Win 7 mileage may vary. If no one posts compatibility updates in the comments then I will try to test them out under Win7 Ultimate 64bit in the coming days.

Now, let's get to the games...

Binary LandBinary Land is a remake of an old Nintendo Entertainment System puzzler. You control two penguins that are in love with each other. The object is to reunite them at the top of the screen where you will find their caged heart. The problem is that you actually control them both at the same time.. and there are plenty of baddies that try and get in your way.

This game has a very interesting play mechanic where you will find yourself "anchoring" one of the little guys while you try to move the other into position. Take a peek.. you'll get the gist.

Jack'o'RoidJack 'O' Roid is a game that I really wanted to write about before Halloween... but, alas, it is only a day late.. and still quite fun to play. What you have here is a nice Halloween inspired Asteroids game. Complete with Pumpkin asteroids, Witches that chase you and floating Skulls that shoot at you. The music is very atmospheric and makes use of quite a few samples from the "Halloween" franchise.

So, if you are in the mood for some Halloween shoot'em up goodness.. be sure to give Jack 'O' Roid a peek.

Donkey Kong CrazeDonkey Kong Craze is an updated remake of the classic- Donkey Kong. The game play is surprisingly close to the original game with a few notable exceptions. First, the graphics have undergone a somewhat significant overhaul. Second, the game also includes levels from the unofficial sequel Donkey Kong II: Jumpman Returns.

formatting

Ok guys.. It just occurred to me today that I've been formatting my posts to look reasonable on a 1024x768 screen. I'm probably one of the last people using that resolution as standard. :-) So I checked the posts on my Win7 box with the widescreen LCD... yup, formatting was all screwed up. So I went back to my previous posts and corrected them all.

Sorry 'bout that.
