30 Mind-Blowing Old PC Ads

Rob Daviau's picture

Here is a cool article I came across on TechXilla Website, interesting to look at these old PC ads and comparing them with today's machines. These would be good to show people whining about PC prices today lol! At one time a 10MB cost over $3000! Can you imagine? A couple interesting "celebrity" endorsements appear as well most should be satisfied with the inclusion of Atari and Commodore brands among othersl. Not the greatest comments accompany the article but the Ads themselves are gold, enjoy!

I know I'm a PITA with this

I know I'm a PITA with this stuff, but I found the article commentary rather lazy. Those ads are certainly enjoyable (though common), but I would have liked a bit more analysis beyond, "a modern PC has y" and "hey, this cost x dollars!", which in reality costs even more when you adjust for inflation, which is what the guy should have done.

I agree Bill which is why I

I agree Bill which is why I pointed out after an edit in my last line that the commentary was nothing special. I have seen many of these all over but it was nice to have them all in one page, I posted this only for the ads themselves, people can make their own analysis and hopefully comments.

Right, and I also don't like

Right, and I also don't like the fact there are no dates or what magazine the ads are from.

Agreed, really would have

Agreed, really would have been just as well a gallery of Ads instead. Anyway, still some really cool ads that put things into perspective, I still have friends and relatives that bitch and moan about computer prices but the fact is if a complete desktop setup cost $300 new they would still gripe lol!

Some of these ads are cheeky

Some of these ads are cheeky to say the least. Imagine trying to get away with that Telex operator one today.

It would be fun to compare

It would be fun to compare things that actually got worse over the years, like how long it took the average PC to boot up, or how much noise and heat they generated, or how many Watts they consumed . I have a feeling these things were extremely bad in the last decade, but have been getting better again in this decade.

Yes, it would. Even things like battery life in notebooks is interesting, because even though notebooks like the Tandy Model 100/102 did far less than modern systems, their battery life was stellar (around 20 hours from a set of regular batteries).

Maybe if I have some time in the not too distant future I'll come up with an article like that for fun.

Nice find

Really good stuff, good find.

One minor gripe: "These would be good to show people whining about PC prices today lol!" I'm not sure about using "lol" at the end of a sentence like that; makes you sound a bit more like a YouTube commenter than you probably want.

I used "lol" because it was my intent to convey my sense of finding it humorous, it is indeed your gripe and of no concern of mine. I am more of a Youtube commenter and I don't pretend to be anything else, the majority of my online activities before becoming a member here was my Youtube channel and Facebook groups, while I myself am annoyed by the over use of "leetspeak" and have never been into TWITTER or Instant Messaging etc, I am far from a journalist or even an amateur writer, this will not change, it is who I am, who I will continue to be, I am not interesting in trying to come off as something more or satisfying other peoples Grammar standards.

Fair enough

"I am not interesting in trying to come off as something more or satisfying other peoples Grammar standards."

Ah, I didn't do a good job of conveying what I meant. It wasn't an attack on you guys, or on YouTube. It wasn't anything to do with my personal preference, it was simply that I thought it made the site look a bit less professional to load it up and see lol inside a sentence. If that isn't any concern then that's totally OK too - simple misunderstanding - but I did not at all mean it as a Grammar Nazi attack. I have no problem with that kind of language in general, just - if I saw it on the front page of a 1up.com story I would be a bit confused. That's all I meant. Apologies for coming off sounding like a jerk, or anything. -Keith
