I'm not sure how many of you have tried this new form of Digital Crack, I almost feel bad mentioneing it. I had checked out some videos of it a month or two ago and basicly "didnt get it". It sorta looks like Super Mario (the old ones) in a FPS 3D world. The gameworld is completly made of blocks. When watching in a video it looks a bit like 3D dot Heros game, a old retro game done in 3D. Like I say, the videos dont do this game justice in even a small sense. Lately the game has gotton ALOT of buzz, its everywhere so I decided to give it a go. I used the IN browser version and took a look. Again at first glance it was very HO HUM.. But I kept at it for about 20 minutes and all the sudden I understood the HOOK..... I really would take a look if you havent, but be warned its Addicting if you get past the slightly steep learning curve to start.
The game is basicly a Sandbox, no goal except to build and live. Something I didnt understand when i started. I couldnt see any way to hurt myslef except by falling to far or drowning.. Then Night fell... well lets just say you can die very easy. I will try to explain a tiny bit and not destory the fun of the game. If any of you have played SETTLERS, you have a rouhg idea of the crafting system. the game is in FP view. You can drop stuff, and you can "mine" stuff.. pretty much any block in the world will give you some type of resource. Trees give you logs, logs give you wood/sticks/planks etc.. Very simple controls, the standard WSAD, a drop key, a jump key and a OPEN crafting window (inventory) key. Crafting and Building are the two main draws of the game. You can shape the world any way you want, and the WORLD is huge... it is populated by cows, pigs, chickens, and ...other things...
So basicly a square of dirt when dug/mined gives you a Square of dirt... the block (when mined) turns into a mini version of itself you put into your inventory. Once in your Inventory you can put it in your HAND and place it it anywhere. SO basicly think lego's you take the world apart and put it togther. here is the hitch... Only trees replenish, and only if you plant them.. when harvesting a tree a "shrub?" drops, you can plant it to regrow another tree. BUT it takes time, lots of it. The game has Day night cycles, and NIGHT is dang dark (if you dont cheat and change your gamma)...
There is so much and I'm so hooked.. I want to say so much more but hate to ruin the "exlore and learn" part of the game.. bucuase thats part of it to.. they dont give you any real instruction, you learn as you go. You build your castles, your kingdom. You can heard the animals and "pen" them in.. Chickens will leave eggs (yes there is cooking and armour making) you make tourchs ( learn this one quickly) and pick axes, shovels, axes, weapons, etc...
One hint that alluded me ... when crafting, the way you put items in the craft boxes matters.. if it takes 2 sticks and 2 rocks.. putting them in any order may not work, think how the layout of the item you want to make looks...
I hate that I found this game, I bought it and wanna skip work and play... not a good thing.. Dont let the simple graphics fool ya (but I would suspect if there is a group of people who understand gameplay befreo graphics it should be this bunch).. and if somebody has mentioned this game before... sorry for repost.. I'm just dang hooked and wanted to share.
You referred to dune II now that brings back some memory's getting eaten by sand worms turrets madly flailing bullets about
As for minecraft I am busy setting up web sites and servers to Play minecraft I must admit I haven't really played much in the way of games lately but this one has my attention for now.
Some of the mods are very interesting such as Tekkit, I set up a tekkit server on the first day it was running one guy had played it for 15 hours straight the last i seen he was still going.
Just goes to show the its all in the game play and not the graphics

The latest issue of PC Gamer has a nice sample walkthrough, which I'll be making liberal use of...
If you want in on Minecraft, you better get it before Monday!:
Love this game, very addictive :). You mine for materials, you build stuff from that materias and you have to survive the night when the monsters come. In multiplayer mode, I mostly play on piggy.bwana.tv server.
A very good IGN article on Minecraft: http://pc.ign.com/articles/113/1133465p1.html . It looks like I'm active now, so I'll get to be playing it myself, perhaps as early as tonight.
I've followed this Minecraft thread, read all the messages, went to the website for more info, watched Youtube videos, and... I still don't get it. I suppose I could download it and see for myself, but based on some of the posts here (like Matt's), you don't get the real game without purchasing it.
I thought the EXACT same thing when i heard all the fuss about 6 7 months ago. I looked at the screen shots. Graphics are pretty crude, kinda ugly even. Then the youtube videos, pretty blah, especially the ones that most links post to. So i asked a few buddies, i got basicly " I looked at it, looks pretty unimpressive" or "tired it an love it" no in between (of course it was only 4 different people I asked that knew about it).
Its simply a game (sandbox) you will like it or not get. I would say if you liked games Like Popuolous, Dungoen Keeper, games, that give you the tools to make the world, you will most likely like it. As said, its not finished, he is adding stuff to the game all the time. its really only been a "game" (enemies and a goal, while simple , just servive) for a short bit. Original it was almost 100% Legos... just build, which is suprisingly fun. Its a game tht requires the player to do alot of the CREATIVE side of it.
As the one vidoe says. You are alone with no tools, no idea where you are, nothing. You make it all. At night enemies come out (they spawn in any dark area, the darker, the more often). Skeletons, Zombies, Spiders, Blob CUbes (really rare).. When the light comes (sunlight) it will burn up the zombies and skeletons, it will make spiders somewhat passive, cubes.. not sure. And of course the CREEPERS! they are day or night.... and the most feared (will not spoil it for you). Once you start, you have nothing.. you need to hack a tree down (with your hand), then you will get WOOD BLOCKS, and maybe a sappling (sappling need to be replanted to groo into another tree, wood is about the only resource you can create). Wood makes sticks, or wood blocks. Stcks make handles to swords, shovels, pick axes, etc... Dirt is well, dirt, grass willl grow on dirt if there is grass beside it. Stone can be mined by hand (slow) or with a pickaxe. All tools degrade with use so you need to make more. There is coal (for fires, torchs, etc) flint (arrows), tin (or is it silver?), gold and diamond.. all tougher then the one before it. You can make tools out of wood, stone, tin, gold, diamond. You can make Armour for your character (so he takes less dmaage when hit). Cows give leather, sheep give wool, pigs give bacon (cook it to get Hitpoints back), chickens drop eggs (unused right now). and feathers (arrows). etc.. many other things.
If you dig into the world you will discover cave systems (genreally populated with baddies) Also the good stuff, tin/gold etc are only deep down. To dig down you need torchs and ladders (depending on how you dig down). There are alos open cave systems with surface access too. Keep in mind baddies need sunlight to hit them to burn up, so in the caves they never die unless you kill them. ALSO underground are MONSTER makers here and there. They are hard to destroy and spawn mobs all the time. They also have treasure chests by them (simple stuff like a saddle you can ride the pigs with(ya its as cool as it sounds hehe)) or feathers, or rare minerals.
So basicly, you build your Base, simple or complexe... Hut or CASTLE. You make roads (or landmarks, or?) to find your way. I beleive I read the game can be 3X the size of the earth (way bigger then anybody would ever use). The world is genreated as you expand and explore, so if you stick in one small spot your game world will be small and not take up alot of HD space, as you expand the saves get bigger and bigger). The carrot on the stick is expanding, finding more minerals, building cooler things, etc...
Honestly the game is only going to appeal to explorers, builders, its not about killing stuff, and there will be many days of game time nothing NASTY will be around.
It is really somthing you cant describe, you have to play. I WOULD not recomend it if you are not a person who enjoys building stuff for no reason other then you "built it", exploreing a world, makeing it your domain. The Game REQUIRES you to make the goals. I can say for sure, some will not enjoy it, i really doubt I would have 15 years ago, it would have been to slow paced for me. But nowdays I play Minecraft for maybe an hour every day (most times more) and L4D2.. ZOMBIE killing appeals to me, not sure why.
minecraft is one of those games I want to tell people about, not to often I have done that... just not many games that have that "I should show everybody" thing going for um..
Dune II (way back when it came out)
Yes, "Sandbox Strategy" is a great way to put it. So is "Virtual Lego's". You can play the game with monsters on or off. You can play it as a survival game or as a construction sandbox game. Most of the confusion, I think, is because the programmer started selling the game before the game was really all there. He's slowly adding and fine-tuning elements as time goes on... that being said, what you get for your money right now is more than worth the cost of admission.
I remember back in the day when I first played Civ and I figured I'd kick it around for a few hours and see what all the fuss was about.. next thing I knew, the suns coming up. Thats the same experience I had with Minecraft.
