MonroeWorld Refugee! :)

From reading the only comment on the site, it sounds like he got upset and will probably be back up in a little while. He's probably too "vested" at this point to call it quits.

It's no secret that there's been plenty of drama on MW, most of it really blown out of proportion, but the immediate cause seems clear after talking to Flare.
In a thread about whether the profanity filter on the forums should be shut off, both Turbo and TheAlien both basically went off on Shane saying they were fed up with the way he was running the forums (citing stuff like Shane deleting/editing their posts and generally being kind of outcast). Shane basically said that if they didn't like the forums they could GTFO, and later shut down the forum (the chat stayed up for a while longer, which is why I know this info).
Personally I feel this is a poor way of handling the situation. If this is a few day time-out, then I'll be back as soon as it reopens, but if this thing lasts multiple weeks... whether or not I'll come back is kind of questionable.
Other MW members should holler in this thread, I'd like to see what everyone else has to say (I know I've talked to Nectar, asciimov, and Flare already).

A little history, Chadster... This happened once before. Shane blew up the forums. Some people went over to Armchair Arcade (the old site, that we have archived, since we never want anyone to lose access to anything, ever). Shane eventually put the forums back. Nearly everyone returned to there. More people came on and it probably grew to new heights (though in a slightly different way and with a slightly different demographic). Shane may or may not have blown up the forums again. If he did and he brings it back again, I'm positive nearly everyone will return. That's the way it goes. So really, this is deja vu all over again. The first time this happened, we allowed people to vent on Armchair Arcade freely. We (the Armchair Arcade team) got "blamed" for a lot of that (basically allowing the vitriol/venting). We'll allow people to vent again, of course, if that's what they so choose, and again, we welcome anyone who so chooses to make a home here as well, even if it is just for a short time until Shane re-opens his own forums again (which is what happened the last time).

What Happened

It's no secret that there's been plenty of drama on MW, most of it really blown out of proportion, but the immediate cause seems clear after talking to Flare.

Hmm

Shane can do whatever he wants on his own forums. But it does hurt the regulars that enjoy the site when all is shut down.
Block and ignore is the best option.

Drama related back to the Monroeworld get-together last weekend

Posting anonymous as my username/password does seem to work here anymore.

Anyhow, My take on the forums closing : Shane and a couple of guys wanted to spend sunday night together at the Monroeworld get-together last weekend, so they basically made up a couple of BS stories and disappeared rather than just telling everyone what was going on. 4 or 5 guys were left at the hotel with nothing to do until the next day when their flights were leaving. Worknman (sp?) on the forums was posting on the forums mid last week about how things had suddenly ended on sunday afternoon when he had been thinking that things were going to continue into the wee hours of the night. Shane and the other guys came clean on what had happened which made even more hard feelings between some people.

Some of the guys thought that Shane should have been keeping them entertained 24-7 from the sounds of it, or at least should have had some sort of agenda which laid it all out in advance so their expectations were on par with reality. Shane and the core monroeworld guys took the stance that its just a get-together and everyone is responsible for their own well-being and entertainment and that its a bit unfair to expect Shane to be a host 100% of the time.

Basically just a bunch of drama over expectations not meeting reality, or something along those lines. This basically just bookends a bunch of other drama on the forums between people bitching about not enough retro gaming or even gaming in general, bitching about all the smart phone threads, bitching about tally and the other trolls, etc....

I guess Shane just needed a break.

Not positive, the last only thing I noticed recently was a thread about the Swearing filter but not sure if people were pissed about it, asking or demanding it be removed or whining or complaining about it. Not sure if that was the final straw of if it might of been a certain someones post(s) that finally did it (I wont name names but it would not surprise ME if it were a certain member that has been banned in the past and keeps returning) again all just speculation, I am sure we will find out eventually............

Sick of this.

While I certainly do not blame him the problem I have is a few bad eggs seem to ruin it for everyone, just like last time. Why punish those who have supported Monroeworld and even before that RetroGaming Radio just becuase of some trolls etc? Yes I do understand there is a lot to manage and I certainly do not claim to even begin to understand the in and out's of moderating etc BUT Shane does seem to make a rash decision when he gets pissed, I remember all the past drama the first time he shut down forums. Can it not be simple? I mean he does seem to try to cater to everyone, creating a flames forum or using curse word filters etc, but it always gets out of hand and then at some point Shane just says "screw it, enough is enough" and again I understand that, and I will not claim that I have not contributed to goading on a member I dislike etc but we are all adults and you are going to get stuff like that happening in any anonymous community. Just MY opinion but instead of punishing everyone I think Shane should just simply enforce whatever rules and guidelines behind the scenes end of story. Whatever his rules or guidelines are simply do not budge, let people go on and on about "freedom of speech" "My rights" etc, until they are blue in the face the fact is they are Shane's forums, get out of line, break a rule, whine, bitch complain maybe Shane can close the thread/topic, remove the offenders comment, give ONE warning and if the offender challenges it, complains etc, PERMANENT BAN PERIOD, drama over, everyone else resumes as normal. Remove the problem and let the rest continue enjoying the forum they enjoy and have supported for years. I AM SICK OF BEING PUNISHED because of others, if I earn myself a permanent ban then it is my own damn fault. Personally, I am well aware of the people who would likely quickly disappear off the forums and I would be happy to see it! I know there are those who would say "But I should be able to say this or that" fine but I would rather have a strict and rigid enforcement of Shane's idea or guidelines then have no forum at all or go to log in just to see some other jackass or jackasses have pushed Shane to the boiling point and caused him make a rash or drastic decision. Shane it is your site, stop trying to please everyone, just enforce your policies and whomever does not like it tough!
