First Pandora Impressions from Early Shipments

Bill Loguidice's picture

While my colleague, Mark Vergeer, and I wait for our own Pandora handheld videogame computers to arrive (I'm roughly 750 - 850 in the queue, and they recently passed the 100 shipped mark) and deliver our own coverage, I thought I would share some of the first impressions others have posted for the year-and-a-half+-delayed device. For a written overview, check here (and more detail, here). For a video overview, look below:

Looking at the video of the device both Web browsing and playing Super Mario Kart (SNES version), I must say, my long dormant excitement for the device is starting to come back!

OK, somebody (Mark?) talk me

OK, somebody (Mark?) talk me down from the ledge. I'm SERIOUSLY considering requesting a full refund of the Pandora. Frankly, with things like the MCC and the Panasonic Jungle either already out or pending, not to mention the rise in other portable emulation devices and options, I'm starting to think the Pandora I put on order TWO YEARS ago is no longer worth the wait, even though, in theory, I should be getting mine within the next month or two (yeah right on that, though). Heck, I could even put the money towards an Alienware laptop and have a killer gaming rig again!

Hmmm...........

Well the PANASONIC Jungle does nothing for me but frankly considering the money you paid for the PANDORA I would get the latest multimedia handhelp from GP Holdings the GP2X Caanoo, same processor but more memory then the WIZ and a bigger screen which is something I didn't like about the WIZ was the tiny screen. I was never into the PANDORA between the price and the size I did not see the point. Sorry I cannot pull you back from the ledge BILL, I don't want you to regret backing out of the Pandora but I think you can get more for your $$$ now. Caannoo is cheap (comparatively) available and already a file archive is available, you could get this and have a $$$$ left over.........

Thanks, Rob. I honestly

Thanks, Rob. I honestly wouldn't get another handheld without a keyboard, as I already have a GP2X-F200 for that, which is criminally underutilized, though there's no denying the Caanoo is appealing. I only mention the Panasonic Jungle because it seems to offer roughly the same/more than what the Pandora offers (at least on paper). I also mentioned the MMC because that offers intriguing possibilities as well, though in a non-portable factor.

I'm REALLY thinking I'm just tired of playing the waiting game with the Pandora and would be better served by getting a nice Alienware laptop. The $400+ refund would go a long way towards that goal. In theory, the Pandora is still an ideal solution, but I'm not just convinced like I was all that time ago and my needs have changed a bit in the two years (added to the fact I don't at present have a gaming computer).

Good luck, Bill. In my opinion, they all but ripped you off already. I'd demand a refund WITH interest, just to be cheeky.

I'd laugh if they say, "We can't refund your money until you return the device....we just shipped it today."

A Gaming Laptop

After much research, it appears that Sager offers the best price/performance ratio out of anyone in a customizable gaming laptop, specifically at the moment the NP8760-S1: http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=category_browse&selected_cat=10

Too bad they don't offer a financing option, but I'll see if I can figure something out once my refund comes.

My 2 year+ Pandora is officially over

After being dispatched a refund check in early October, which never arrived, it was canceled and I was issued a refund via an alternative method, which officially went through today. So my Pandora odyssey is officially over. I read the other day that they're still having issues with some supplier or another, so there are further delays or what-not. While they handled my refund professionally and seem to be on the up-and-up, it seems there is no end to their other issues, particularly manufacture and delivery. I wish them the best, but between all the Pandora issues and them branching off into bluetooth and other cell phone controllers, it seems that there is no particular end in sight for those waiting for their systems. Good luck, Mark...
