First Pandora Impressions from Early Shipments

Bill Loguidice's picture

While my colleague, Mark Vergeer, and I wait for our own Pandora handheld videogame computers to arrive (I'm roughly 750 - 850 in the queue, and they recently passed the 100 shipped mark) and deliver our own coverage, I thought I would share some of the first impressions others have posted for the year-and-a-half+-delayed device. For a written overview, check here (and more detail, here). For a video overview, look below:

Looking at the video of the device both Web browsing and playing Super Mario Kart (SNES version), I must say, my long dormant excitement for the device is starting to come back!

The infamous queue

Now this is interesting. My approximate cue position is 700-800. Now what will this mean? That I am about just as far in as Bill.... weird....

Why is that weird? Didn't we pre-order at roughly the same time? I'm pretty sure we did. In any case, it means we have some more waiting to do... :-(

Hmm, now on Twitter, Craigx

Hmm, now on Twitter, Craigx is talking about taking orders for batch 2 by the end of this month (June). Hope they don't lose focus again. For them to take new orders at the end of June, I would hope that that means that they get 100% of batch 1 out by July...

Sounds like there are plenty of software issues to work out...

This is a very late reply to

This is a very late reply to the original reply below.

I gota admit there may be far to much "old man" creeping into my decision making processes. I look at products nowdays and look at function, cost and how much I will use it. Where did all that come from? I can remeber working 2 jobs so i could have a 2600 and Intelvision at the same time (i wont get into the hours of misery so i could keep both in games). The grain bin cleaning to get the money for a celecovision. etc.. Finally out on my own and plunking $599 down on a 3DO (more then i made in month way back then).

I'm a gadget geek, I buy far to many and so many dont get used. Yesterday I cleaned a closet out that I hadnt seen the back of in almost 10 years. I filled the back of my van with game boxes/manuals and accessory boxes (friend is going to cut um up to make a wall in his gameroom)....I was slightly unsure once i dug through um if i wanted to get rid of them. But I guess 10 years of not looking an noticing um, maybe i wont miss um (untill e-bay has NES console boxes for $100 in 20 years). I came up with 2 complete Intelvisions with about 60 games each (and voice, with all the overlays), 2 Colecovisions and about 50 total games and 4 addons (and those ball top controlers, what where they thinking?) A SMS, lightgun and glasses (and games) ...and more all EBAY purchases from at least 15-20 years ago. Also came up with a LCD car headunit new in box, and a Sony 10 disc changer (do not remeber buying either). My old battery powered Squirtgun (illiegal nowdays).. it still works, i had been looking for it! About 20 boxes (the big ones) of my football and baseball cards (again, i had forgotten about um).

err sorry, i sorta hit a treasure trove (to me, boring to you all) my point was I uesd to buy anything i thought was cool, nowdays i put far to much effort in finding reasons I shouldnt. And it showed below.

Incedently tonight I'm going to be playing it old school with original controlers... err if i can get it hooked up to my 65" DLP... been a looooong time... dont think new tv's have aspot to screw and antenna on :(

They're estimating into early

They're estimating into early October to fulfill all 4,000 of the initial pre-orders: http://pandorapress.net/2010/07/01/production-status-ii-something-about-... . We know how good they are at estimating. If that October estimate is to be believed, that would put them exactly 25 months from the time they took pre-orders, in other words literally two years of waiting. Since my cue position appears to be less than halfway through that 4,000 figure, I would think - without any other catastrophes - that a safe estimate for me to get mine will be August. That's fine by me as it will give the software more time to mature, since obviously I'm no developer or hardware guru, just a user, and having good emulators to use will be critical for my enjoyment of the device.

They either severely

They either severely underestimated the time or realized that very few people would pre-order an item two+ years in advance.

They severely underestimated the time by a factor of 8 (though I'm not good at math). They sold through 4,000 pre-orders quickly, then the ~two year wait began.

I'm patient

I can be very patient when it comes to the Pandora, but to quench my gadget thirst I got myself a 32gb iPod touch. As the wait can still be pretty long....
