Matt Chat 55: Daikatana with John Romero

Matt Barton's picture

Here it is, the one you've all been waiting for! In this episode, we discuss the infamous Daikatana and the ill-fated ad campaign ("John Romero will make you his $@$@@"). If you've enjoyed the other Romero episodes, you definitely can't miss this one.

Matt sets the bar high

Like Mark said - As always...a great episode! John seemed very genuine when he talked about the ad created by the guy in marketing. It was nice to hear and see his take on it. You could write down what he said and publish it, but this is where an interview really shines - Seeing someone voice their feelings on camera makes all the difference. While you can never throw out possible acting when someone is on camera, I thought John's words were legit.

Bill - Which Origin games did you have trouble getting to run? I think the Wing Commander games were under the Origin label, but those are the only ones I remember playing. I never picked up the Ultima games.

I always ran my DOS software off an EMM386 configuration. If I didn't run that, then I only used XMS. It seems like QEMM was the other main EMS manager back then. I recall reading something about 3rd party memory managers that basically said "no" when it came to running games. Configuring 4 MB was oftentimes troublesome, but 8 MB made things really easy.

It was all about getting devices to load into an upper memory block! Haha.

Apologies, Matt. I suppose I must have nostalgia for config.sys and autoexec.bat. Imagine that....

Ultima VI, Ultima VII, Strike Commander. Games like that. They were state of the art at the time (well, not necessarily VI), and weren't compatible with the memory managers of the day. Origin had recommended configurations, but I could never get it to work right with my sound card (I believe it was a standard Sound Blaster too).

Wing Commander is one of the games I couldn't get to work. I don't know if nostalgia is the right word for it. Ha ha. More like "trauma". And I thought "memmaker.exe" was doing me a favour.

Anyway, the interview was great. I didn't know at first that it was going to cover a whole decade in his career.
