I saw James Cameron's "AVATAR," and it was an AWESOME experience! Some of the reviews I've read lowered my expectations quite a bit, so I was quite surprised by what I saw. Avatar is an EVENT! In my opinion, AVATAR has indeed changed the face of cinema, at least in my eyes!

For those of you who might be thinking, "I hate CGI," well, this movie is wall-to-wall CGI, but I completely bought into the visuals. CGI has come a long way, and this movie takes CGI to a whole new level! I was heavily interested in movie visual effects since I first saw Star Wars back in 1977, before the arrival of CG. Then, I followed the industry as it moved more and more into CG for visual FX. Well, this movie has, by far, the most complex CG ever done on film. I'm talking plant stalks billowing in the wind, CG animals that move and react realistically, and by far the most realistic performance capture technology ever done on film.

If you see this movie, see the 3D version only! While the story and characters, as well as the FX, would work even in 2D, the 3D is what put this movie over the top and made it an EXPERIENCE! I suspect that the movie would seem much more pedestrian, and the visual FX not as believable or immersive, if viewed in flat 2D. But in 3D, the visuals are very believable!

As for the story, I've read the "Dances With Smurfs" criticisms and went in with such cynical expectations. Well, it is definitely in the same mold as that genre. But as the old saying goes, "it's the singer, not the song." And boy, can Mr. Cameron sing!

I went with a group of friends, and they all loved it. In fact, this is the first time I've been in a theater where the audience clapped at the end of the movie! And my friend's wife said it was the best movie she's ever seen!

Ok, enough raves, but I had to put my opinions in words somewhere, and I know that most everyone on this forum has an interest in sci-fi/fantasy movies as well, so I here my thoughts are on AA.

See it in 3D! This movie has restored my faith in epic movies. I had to sit through drek like Transformers 2, G.I. Joe, 2012, and Star Trek (not a bad movie, actually), to get to this one. Don't see it in 2D....
