Matt Chat 33: Jade Empire - and a chance to win Dungeons & Desktops!

Matt Barton's picture

Hi, guys, here's the new Matt Chat. See below for contest info!

So, hope Bill and Mark don't mind that I drafted them as judges!

I had so much luck getting video responses for the bookmarks contest that I thought I could do even better with the actual book as a prize. I'm not sure what criteria we'll use to determine the winner, but I think it could be creativity, thoroughness, insight, etc. I expect someone could take a very straightforward, matter-of-fact approach, whereas someone else might get really funny with it (snakes around the neck!). I'd also like to see some good a/v work, perhaps with special effects or music. But, I'll leave that to the contestants! I'm sure we'll be very open minded here, so do whatever you think would be fun to make.

Ending

I liked the way you ended this chat with a direct reference to the game (assuming it was an attack from the game) and that effect you used! Nice work as always! :)

Don't do that again, Matt!

Seriously, I was expecting you to close out this Matt Chat, as usual, with a humourous quip or witticism, but I WASN'T EXPECTING THAT!!! I literally leaped out of my chair in surprise as you suddenly started chucking fireballs at me! I'm not kidding, I really jumped!!!

Another great Matt Chat, as usual, with "Jade Empire" being a great choice of featured game! I've heard nothing about this game, so after viewing the video, I was extremely psyched!! Role Playing with martial arts fighting?!?!?! I am so there!!!!!

As for your comment "it does feature a fighting game engine, but don't let that scare you away..." WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Not only is the fighting element NOT A TURN OFF, it actually makes me excited to play the game! A fighting game with the depth of a role-playing game is a great selling point! I suspect that the typical gamer will feel the same. Not everyone has to have turn-based, deep-egghead stats to enjoy a role-playing game!

Anyhow, just when I was starting to get burned out on CRPG's, you bring one to my attention that I HAVE to play!

One of The Loguidice's

One of The Loguidice's favorite words is "mis-remembering," and that is definitely the case with this game for me, Rob. I could have sworn that it was you who recommended this game to *me*, and yet clearly I got it wrong. I guess someone else must have turned me on to this game, because I wasn't enthused at all when I first heard about it (unlike you, the fighting stuff didn't appeal to me until I had tried it). Now I'm wondering just who it was that DID recommend it so strongly; whoever it was sold the game very well.

One thing that MaximumRD's recent video made clear is that we're a VERY diverse group here at AA. I almost soiled my chainmail when I heard him say that he hates turn-based crpgs. What??? I thought that games like Pool of Radiance, Phantasie, Bard's Tale, and so on were one thing that united us. On the other hand, I've never enjoyed "survival horror" games like Resident Evil in the least. I like campy horror movies like Evil Dead and so on, but genuinely "scary" games turn me off. I'm anxious enough as it is without some game intentionally trying to scare me. I still don't know how I managed to make it through Doom 3. It was hell!

That said, I do enjoy survival very much (mostly in book form), but not so much the scary part of it. Fallout and Fallout 3 are about as "scary" as I want to go in a survival game. If it comes down to stuff jumping out at me and blood and gore everywhere, I get too nervous and have to turn it off. I'm not a chicken; I *can* endure it if I really set out to do it, but it's just not fun or addictive for me. Much like in real life; I can stand up to bullies or buttheads when I absolutely have to, but I definitely don't enjoy it and seldom lose my temper unless it's really a remarkable situation. I guess I'm just not an aggressive person!

Anyway, all of this is just an extended way of saying that when I heard about Jade Empire I was more worried and pessimistic than excited. Of course, Bioware is such a great company that they can pull something like this off without a hitch. I'd love to know what an actual fan of fighting games would think about the game. Would they like it, or feel that it was too easy or simplistic? In any case, I hope to hear more from folks regarding this game.

P.S. I was very pleased with the special effect at the end. I planned that as a surprise (guess it worked!!), but hadn't ever tried anything like that before. In the course of doing it, though, I learned a lot about Vegas that I didn't know before, and feel that I opened up some new doors. Hopefully, I'll find ways to exploit my hard-earned knowledge in future episodes.

@Matt He he, well MATT I

@Matt

He he, well MATT I knew my video would surprise some people as I never voiced my opinion on genres before. That said I guess "hate"
can be a strong word. You see, more than likely I will try Jade Empire and I am sure I will like aspects of it. As for games you mentioned like The Bards Tale, Pool of Radiance etc, I tried and played them all because I just love games in general. I have tried over and over but as soon as the "battles" begin I my eye's just glaze over and boredom sets in lol! I feel restricted that I cannot just start swinging my sword in real time. So it's just that one aspect, the the turn based battles I cannot get into. As I said though, I love games and gaming in general and though that one aspect may not appeal to me I am not blind to how others can be drawn into them, I like hearing about them and when you do your videos I am just as fascinated learning about games I personally enjoyed as much as the ones I didn't, I've read detailed articles about the history of many such games and found them really interesting too. I was actually surprised all the comments on Youtube from people who feel the same way as me, I was honestly expecting to be slammed hard for daring to say I didn't like RPG's for the most part lol! I feared the wrath of Wizards and Warriors alike ha ha. It just goes to show that peoples taste in games is as diverse as music, movies, sports etc.

Oldschool games, some people just don't "get it"...
