This is a video response to what type of controller is your favourite controller. For me it would be arcade sticks. Excellent value for money and precise control for fighters, puzzlegames, platform games and shmups. For FPS I prefer the gamepad ala PS3 Dualshock and the X360/Xbox controllers/Logitech (wireless) rumblepad 2.

So what are your favourite video game controllers?

It's interesting to see how

It's interesting to see how different people hold the old Atari joystick. I wrapped my right hand around it and controlled the stick with the part of my hand between the thumb and forefinger, using the thumb of the other hand to hit the button. Other people would place it on a surface and control it by gripping the stick with one hand and tapping the button with the other finger. I've seen plenty of other positions--pretty crazy ones, too, but yet they all seem to work out. That's really cool that you could develop your own style; don't see that nearly as much with gamepads.

keyboard /mouse by a long

keyboard /mouse by a long shot. After that I prefer the old sony gamepads over all others. I think this is just becuase the PS1 was at the hight of my console days so I spent alot (shuddr to think how much) time with that system. Most of the current gamepads follow the sega genesis curved style which the N64 and dreamcast started to perfect. Most nowdays seem to be pretty good. I did like those old Wico baseball bat sticks for the atarti 2600, C64 and Amiga.. still have a working set. Big, but tough. And ya, I loves the 2600 sticks back in the day.. I only ever wore one out (but i was a thhumb on top of stick guy so i didnt put much presure on them).

Mouse/keyboard for me by

Mouse/keyboard for me by far. Afterwards, I'd probably go with the dual shock and in sticks probably the Atari joystick (or X-Arcade). I never had the Epyx stick you guys love so much, but it sounds like one I'd enjoy. I also had a Microsoft flight stick I enjoyed very much--think it was called the Sidewinder.

I had a controller (Sega/C-64 ports) that looked like a big red trackball, but the ball didn't roll. Instead, it clicked up, down, etc. It sounds a bit weird, but controlled quite well. I liked it because it was very easy on the hands and wrist, but as I recall it was a bit tricky hitting the diagonals (a problem with most sticks, it seems).

I too am a huge fan of the Epyx 500xj, though since I've worn mine out I've gone back to the Atari 2600 controllers again. If I ever found a cheap "new" pair, I'd be back to the 500xj's though. I do have them for the SMS and/or NES, but I've never tried it on a two button system.

Crazy to say, but I never got into the mouse/keyboard combo myself.

My faves, probably controversial....

#1: I'm not sure if it's just for sentimental reasons, but I liked the original Atari 2600 controller. It was simple, had a VERY short throw (when it was new), and was very responsive. Too bad it wore out so easy, but when it was in good condition, it was the best. My #1. I like joysticks with short throw.

#2: Epyx 500xj. It was well-built, fit easily in your and, and was very responsive, with a nice "clicky" sound when you moved the joystick, much like an arcade controller. I still have two of these things.

Ok, not too controversial so far, but here's...

#3: Mouse/keyboard combo. I find that this combo works MUCH better than joysticks, especially for FPS and other 3D games. Joysticks just don't (usually) cut it. The mouse is an excellent "analog" device (or the equivalent), and the keyboard provides "digital" response.

Honorable mention: the paddle controller in general, particularly the Atari 2600 paddles. Excellent response for games suited for this controller.

Overrated: Trackballs. Lots of effort with poor precision. Centipede and Missile Command work much better with a mouse.

Modern fave: I'll take the XBOX 360 standard controller. Solid, fits in the hands easily, and the controls are solid and responsive. The button positioning is good, also. It just feels like a solid controller.

I like lots of controllers.

I like lots of controllers. Modern day, I like the Xbox 360 controller. Classic, the original Atari joystick is very good. I liked the Sega Saturn controller. Hmm, I'll have to give this more thought...
