Willy Byte in the Digital DimensionWilly Byte in the Digital DimensionFacebook friend and Virtual Apple ][ guy himself, Bill Martens, sent word that the site, which allows anyone to play a large range of Apple ][ and Apple IIgs games in your browser, has been updated to version 4.4, and now supports both PC and Macintosh. This has been an Armchair Arcade favorite for a long time now, so this is welcome news.

To play a game, select the disk from the menu. Click on Yes to automatically download the ActiveGS emulator and disk images in Internet Explorer. Click on Install Add-Ons when prompted in Mozilla's Firefox Browser or Safari. The new ActiveGS plugin is compatible with most browsers on both Mac OS X 10.5.x and PC Windows 2K and newer (you will need to install the plugin in order to use the games on the site). Joystick control is through the mouse/touchpad. All of the games on the Virtual Apple ][ website are playable offline as well as online. You can download the disk images to your favorite game right from the website, fire up an emulator on your machine and play them right there on your local PC or Mac (or any other OS that supports an offline emulator for that matter). More news is promised in the coming weeks, but be sure to check it out now!

Yes, this is an incredible resource. And he even includes the roms in case you want to run it in your own emulator. I get so much use out of this thing it's not even funny. ;)

Virtual Apple II site

Everything looks and plays great on this site, and is an excellent resource. The main problem, though, is that I don't know what keys to push to play most of these games. I must have hit every key on my keyboard trying to control "Karateka," but never could figure out how to move my character! Some instructions for each game is in order.

Keys for game play

That is an area we are working on. We hope to have a hot key like F1 which would bring up a quick reference for the particular game. We have setup for it and a few other things but havent implemented them yet due to the amount of data we are talking about. Sometime later this summer hopefully!

Make sure you have the

Make sure you have the updated ActiveGS or whatever the plug-in is called from the site. Also, try a different browser. I've had different luck whether I was using Firefox or IE, for instance.

keyboard does not work to control games

I'm very excited about this, but unfortunately the keyboard rarely works once the game is loaded. From what I've been reading it should work perfectly, but it does not. Any hints? Help!
