I must say, I'm tempted, particularly with Amazon's pre-order price guarantee, which has already saved me money on Wii Motion Plus and Fight Night Round 4 (Xbox 360).

Anyone doing the cheaper Windows 7 upgrades now? I'm tempted for both of our laptops for a smoother experience over Vista, but I also think I might just want to wait a bit longer than October and just get a new system.

Yes, but...

Agreed, but with the caveat that if you back up everything before hand and have your important data (documents, etc.) elsewhere, then there's minimal risk when it's something well tested like Windows 7 RC. In our case, I cloned both of our systems using the excellent Acronis True Image 11 Home, and I have all of my important stuff (that's not stored online or on one of my network drives) on a 16GB keychain drive that I bring everywhere with me (and back up as necessary).

Believe me, I've long since learned my lesson to backup, backup, backup and have plenty of redundancy.

Windows 7 RC's on production systems? No go for me!

Christina's actually took

Christina's actually took longer to install, but it worked perfectly the first time through. I didn't have to touch a thing on hers, when on mine it's been the exact opposite.

Well, I upgraded my laptop

Well, I upgraded my laptop after hours and hours, as well as had to fix a really, really stupid issue with the new Start Menu: http://coolthingoftheday.blogspot.com/2009/05/story-of-windows-7-and-emp...

Luckily, that fixed it.

Tomorrow, I'll do Windows 7 RC on my wife's computer, which should go smoother.

Well, I went ahead and Pre-ordered Windows 7

Well, I went ahead and pre-ordered two copies of Windows 7 Home Premium: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-Home-Premium-Upgrade/dp/B002DHLU...

The total was $99.98 and since I have Amazon Prime I get it on its release date, which is October 22nd.

One is for my Gateway Tablet PC running Windows Vista and one is for my wife's HP Multimedia Laptop running Windows Vista Pro. Tonight or tomorrow I'll get my laptop cloned and then do the Windows 7 RC update, then do the same thing for my wife's laptop once that's finished.

Call me a sucker, call me masochistic, but I just can't resist the siren call of something that promises to be better than what I already have and am not 100% satisfied with (as in Windows Vista).

I was tempted to get the $99 version that contains Windows XP in it, but I already pretty much did everything necessary to get off of any dependency on that, plus it will save me some much needed hard drive space.

I'm running the free RC

I'm running the free RC release, which is installed in ultimate mode. I'll probably preorder 7pro just so I can keep my win32 partition updated. I dont use it often but it was a real pain to get xp installed on my quadcore box, xp does not like my 8gb ram.

I'm considering it for my parents' laptop, although XP is doing just fine for them.

I'd say go for it, Matt.

I'd say go for it, Matt. Frankly, I haven't heard a single negative note about the OS. Everyone loves it and the most common theme is that "it's the best Windows EVER", and this is from Linux and Mac people (who have told me personally).

It's a shame that the $50 upgrade version doesn't offer Windows XP "mode". The $100 version does, though.

My ONLY debate with this is whether to buy the software (which won't be out until at least October), or just wait until 2010 to get a new system with it pre-installed. Normally there would be no debate since in my experience upgrading over an old version of an OS causes headaches and is never as good, but I'm hearing it's a very, very smooth process, so this time it *might* be worth it.

Hmm...Wow. Don't know what

Hmm...Wow. Don't know what to do here...Still trying to figure out if Windows 7 is to Vista what 98 was to 95, or maybe what XP was to 95. If it's going to be as comparatively stable as XP, then I'd be foolish not to buy this. I'm tempted to go for it because it claims to have better support for new processors, and my HP has an AMD Phenom 9550 Quad-Core processor and a 64-bit OS.

Is it worth upgrading or not worth the headache?
