Well, with Nintendo's surprise announcement of Wii Fit Plus, the book I was working on with my wife, Wii Fit For Dummies is now dead. It's not all bad news though, as in its place will be Wii Fit Plus for Dummies. What's really disappointing, though, is that we were more or less on track to finish Wii Fit for Dummies by the end of this month for a November 2009 release. It was also a project that early on I wasn't really "feeling", but was developing into something special. It was of course already special for a "Dummies" brand book because of its full color nature, but I really liked some of the research we uncovered and the tremendous value we were adding that was not necessarily in your typical "Dummies" book. Since Wii Fit Plus will be replacing regular Wii Fit sometime this fall worldwide, the decision was made instead to release an entirely different book, perhaps as early as January 2009. Hopefully we'll be able to leverage a lot of the hard work we put into the other book, but it's probably a long shot to think there will be large amounts of overlap because it's looking to be a pretty significant update, more of a 2.0 than a 1.5. The biggest downside though is that there's no chance of us getting a pre-release version of Wii Fit Plus, so it will be a mad dash to write the book as soon as the product is released to the public. No one ever said writing books in your spare time was going to be easy!

Hmm

Aww rats. I was wondering how the announcement of Wii Fit Plus would alter your Wii Fit for Dummies book. I didn't read much into the announcement for Wii Fit Plus - I only knew it was going to be released. I was unsure how much of a change it would be. Would it be Wii Fit with a few extra exercises? That would make it easy to just write some additional chapters or paragraphs in order to update the book to Wii Fit Plus standards. I assumed the hardest thing would be incorporating the exercises into any workout routines you had already designed for the Wii Fit book.

Alas, you have indicated that it is a significant update. I was happy to see that the book will still live but in a a different form. My first question was going to be, "Bill - Are they sending you an advance copy of the game?" However, you answered that question in your entry. Hmm.

Wiki (what a trustworthy source) lists the release date as Q4 2009 across the board. I wonder if there is any lead time for Japan in this case. Is it a simultaneous release, or will Japan get it earlier? You would need a Japanese Wii in order to play it, but that may help give you an edge in regard to time depending on the difference in release dates. Although the game would be in Japanese, the exercises should be the same. You'd most likely pick up a U.S. version when it comes out as well.

Sticking with a domestic release - Is it up to you to just preorder it at your favorite store since you aren't getting a pre-release copy?

Yeah, if you look at the trailer in the video, you'll see that even the interface is different. While they'll be keeping the existing Wii Fit exercises, they'll be adding a bunch. While what we already wrote for the existing Wii Fit exercises will still apply, it looks like even the exercise screens are different, so there will have to be rewrites to accommodate that. So while some can be re-used, a lot has become invalid.

Two of the major additions will be adding customized routines, a la EA Sports Active, and calorie tracking. While we weren't doing the latter in the original book, we were covering the former in it. Now it will take a different form, more guidance than actually helping to design routines.

It appears it will be a simultaneous worldwide release. I would expect no later that the end of October, though I'm hoping for September. And yeah, we'll have to pre-order from Amazon as soon as it's possible. The basic plan - and it's not a good one, but this is per direction from the publisher - is try to write based on any pre-release information that comes out and then adjust once we get the final product. Ugh.

Unfortunate circumstances

As quite a few folk with a Wii Fit will NOT be upgrading to Wii Fit Plus - I say there still is a market for the regular Wii Fit book. But hey who am I?
But you guys are still on for a Wii Fit Plus for Dummies version right? So not all is lost. Right?

Both Christina and I wanted to proceed with the book as-is, and then do a separate, new Wii Fit Plus book, but the publisher feels - right or wrong - that once Wii Fit Plus comes out, people will want to upgrade and "Wii Fit for Dummies" will seem out-of-date. The major problem was that it took forever to get the book green lit. If we were able to write the thing when it was originally pitched last year, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

And yeah, with 15 million+ units of regular old Wii Fit in circulation throughout the world, I'd still say there's a market, but it's sadly not up to us to make the call.

Yes, we are doing "Wii Fit Plus for Dummies".

Wii Fit Plus Might be more relevant?

Well, in my personal opinion, it sounds like you two may be ahead of the curve when "Wii Fit Plus" hits the shelves. While much of what you two wrote previously might end up in the trash heap, I'm sure that, as your wife's first book, she developed a writing style and sense of the book business that will help her (and you) when re-writing the text.

On top of that, it sounded like much of the buzz of "Wii Fit" might have played out by the time your book would have actually hit the shelves, and it wouldn't help that "Wii Fit Plus" would be arriving about the same time. Sorry you guys put in all that work for (apparently) nothing, but it actually makes more business sense (to me) to upgrade your product at approximately the same time Nintendo upgrades theirs. Perhaps it will result in even higher sales (hopefully)! Either way, having a "For Dummies" book is a great honor.

Another For Dummies Update, Another Change

We've decided to go back to what was more or less the original proposal, and that's "Wii Fitness for Dummies", which will cover "Wii Fit Plus", "EA Sports Active", and in the third section of the book a sort of smorgasbord of other Wii fitness-related items. It will still be a roughly 220 page full color book, and we're still targeting January 2010 for its release, though of course that all depends on when we can get our hands on "Wii Fit Plus".

With the above in mind, I ordered "EA Sports Active" and the second player kit, which should arrive Monday or Tuesday. Should be interesting!
