Why Amazon.com reader reviews are important and why your help is critical

Bill Loguidice's picture

It was very interesting meeting with three of the publishers we either have been working with or will be working with on books. The most sobering aspect was how the behind-the-scenes machinations work in the book industry, which is to say it's a tough business. One of the aspects that was pointed out to us was the value of people posting reviews on Amazon.com (or any regional Amazon). In short, the more reviews - good or bad - the better for a book, as the higher it shows up in searches and the more likely it's to be paired with another book in the auto-recommendations. So, as usual, we're asking for your help. If you want to see more books like this, please be so kind as to let your thoughts be known on Vintage Games and write a review on the relevant Amazon site. Thanks, everyone!

Bill -

I've been slowly making my way through the book by trying to read a chapter a night, and I generally read just before bed. I have recently found myself quickly just going straight to bed due to the limited stretch of free time I have after intense days at work, hanging out with friends, getting things done, etc. I can certainly make some more time for reading (and people should because it helps one relax).

As soon as I have completely made my way through the book, I promise you guys I will write a full review despite having never written a review on amazon.

Hold me to it.

- Chris

Wow, thanks, Chris! We

Wow, thanks, Chris! We certainly don't want anyone to do a rush job or anything; take your time and enjoy the book. Better to wait on an accurate review than post something half baked! :)

Really, though, it's amazing how big a difference reviews make. The sales spike is noticeable and fast. Everybody wants to buy the books that people are talking about!

I just posted my review

I just posted my review, which, according to Amazon, will take up to 48 hours to process. Needless to say, I think it was a "fair and balanced" review.

Sorry for taking so long, but I've been feeling surprisingly lazy as of late. Plus, I had to be honest, so you guys might not appreciate my review, which had some criticisms. But it is there, and it is what I honestly thought.

Believe it or not, writing reviews of your books brings about extreme writer's block, since I don't normally read videogame books, much less write reviews of them. I don't know what I am comparing your book against. Compounding this is the fact that I posted nearly a dozen reviews on Amazon that are not there now (admittedly I posted them all on the same day, which might have caused the problem), and I have a bit of apprehension of posting new reviews. Hopefully this one makes it through, because I busted my ass posting a review of Matt's "D&D" book, only to find that it isn't there now, and I don't feel like going through that again. I did save my review this time, though.

Praise or criticism, as long as we get 5 out of 5 stars I don't care. ;-)

But seriously, not everyone is going to love it or even like it, perhaps even Rowdy Rob included. Like I said, any review - even bad ones (though one hopes they're genuine) - are welcome. Thanks!

(don't see it yet, but there is a fourth review up. I wonder if RR's review will be number five on Amazon.com?)

My review is up on Amazon, and it is embarrassingly long. I may go back and edit it tonight. The "criticisms" are actually minor, so minor that they are a stupid waste of space (except for the last one, which I think is a legitimate gripe). Yeah, I need to go back and trim the review down (if Amazon allows such things, I don't know yet).

Plus, I made the mistake of summarizing the review at the end of it, which technically is good procedure, but doesn't look good when Amazon "encapsulates" your review down to the first paragraph.

I agree 100% with your criticisms. We didn't get into some of the more detailed controversial aspects for space reasons and I too struggled with delaying the online bonus chapters rather than releasing them all at once. Hopefully at the very least it will give you something to look forward to each month through September. In any case, again, you're too hard on yourself as the criticisms were spot on, and hell, I wrote the thing with Matt, so I'm as biased as anyone. Thanks, Rob!

(Oh, and for the record, I wouldn't edit it. It's nice to read comprehensive reviews along with the shorter ones!)

I did a review, its not long

I did a review, its not long like RR's. I have trouble with writing reviews, as I either love or hate it. You guys did a great job and I hope you get more work out of it (like the w00t ofcourse).

looking forward to the w00t.

I think we're going to standardize on "Woot!" for marketing purposes (people won't necessarily think to use the 0's when searching). The production company has www.wootthemovie.com at the moment.

(and thanks so much for the review!)

VG review, and what's a "Woot?"

I think I'm a good writer overall, but the review was written in haste, and was just too long. Few people are going to read it all the way. I don't have the innate gift of brevity. On top of that, I think "scholarly" is not really an accurate description of the book's prose, and such a term might scare away potential readers.

Still, my review is going to stand for now (and possibly forever), since I don't feel like messing with it at this time. And let me make it clear so there are no misunderstandings to AA forum readers: my review was very positive, giving the book five stars, with just a few minor criticisms.

By the way, I guess it's time for me to ask this: what's a "Woot?" I think I heard you mention here that it's some sort of insider gaming term, but I have no idea what it means, or how it pertains to the movie.

In RPG or MMORPG terms, it's essentially, "Wow Loot!". It's also an exclamation of excitement. It was also word of the year by some dictionary. There are other explanations, but for this purpose it's essentially an exclamation of excitement that pertains to gaming. It's often written as "w00t", but for marketing purposes we need to lose the zeros.
