Armchair Arcade Technical Updates

Just a quick note--after some discussion, we've decided to try a few new things here at AA to get more comments and grow our community. The main difference is that we are now allowing you to post comments without having to log in or even register on the site. Obviously, this opens up the spam problem, so I've installed two modules (akismet and bad behavior) to help deal with it. So, if you suddenly find yourself unable to log in or post, please contact me so I can deal with the problem.

Even with these precautions in place, we might end up with spam. If that happens, we can try to deal with it, either deleting it ourselves or recruiting some of you to help moderate.

Obviously, we all put a great deal of work into this site and our various projects, so hopefully this will make it easier for you to give us your thoughts and inspire discussion. It's very important to us for you to post freely and comfortably. If you see a post with no comments, take a moment to make one -- we appreciate all perspectives, and it's easier for new people to join in if there are already 3-4 comments on a post (many people are afraid or intimidated to make the first comment). Also, if you know someone or another community that might be interested in what we do here, please let them know!

I don't want to sound too pessimistic or ungrateful, but if you like this site and are not posting or letting us know--we start to think that what we're doing isn't relevant or appreciated. It only takes a second to say "Great job" or "good work," and it really helps. Not posting hurts our feelings and indirectly affects the quality of the site, since people naturally work harder and are more active when they know people out there are noticing and appreciating the work.

Who's online

Hey Matt -

So long as we are on the subject of technical updates, I have noticed that the "users online" can sometimes display the same user more than once or not show someone at all. I have sometimes seen myself online and sometimes have not even though I have been logged in each time.

The issue is related to things linked to http://armchairarcade.com/whatever and things linked to http://www.armchairarcade.com/whatever. The "www" is important. If you log into "www" and there happens to be an old link without the "www", it thinks you're not logged in. The credentials seem to only be good for one or the other. We transitioned to 100% "www" a few months back, but the older links didn't convert. I'm hoping that the double login thing - ones that are not related to true double logins - will diminish over time.
