Vintage Games Personal Copies are in!

Matt Barton's picture

I just got my big box of Vintage Games books in today! I'm guessing this means that Amazon will be shipping orders very soon, perhaps as early as this week.

I can't wait to read your reviews of our project on Amazon!

I'm gonna laugh if you get a copy with no words in it. :)

Seriously, I can't wait for you guys to finally see what all the fuss is about! Seems like you've been waiting for years.

My copy is on its way too!

I received the notice that Amazon has shipped my order. Estimated arrival date: March 14th (Standard shipping, I guess). I expect to have it before that. I will be among the first people to read the book!

A very truncated newspaper

A very truncated newspaper mention from March 1: http://www.tampabay.com/features/books/article979391.ece

I must admit to being very anxious for the first reviews to start to roll in...

I am as well! :) I did

I am as well! :)

I did notice that sales of D&D spiked after every review went live, even the negative ones. Something about the review process tends to draw attention to a book. For those considering posting a review, a few suggestions:

1. Start with a general statement about the book as a whole. I like "I recommend/do not recommend _title_ because X, Y, and Z." If you start off with a sentence like this, it's very easy to write the rest. Don't ramble on at the beginning; just say whether you should or shouldn't buy the book and your reasons. Ex: "I recommend The Rough Guide to Videogames because it is well written, adequately researched, and lavishly illustrated." And for God's sake get the title right. :)

2. Make sure to give at least one specific example for each claim. "I really liked the images and their captions. For instance, on page 54 is a box shot of blah blah."

3. Put some information in about yourself. What is your background? What drew you to the book? This could be as simple as "I am a 32-year old software engineer and lifelong gamer who has read several other books on gaming."

I think these 3 tips are great for writing reviews.

Things to avoid:

1. Unsubstantiated or vague claims. Ex : "The text would be useful to game developers." How? Why?

2. Unnecessary disclaimers. Ex. "I haven't played all the games they talk about in this book."

3. Wishy washiness. It should be clear whether you recommend it or don't. Don't seem to change your mind or vacillate.

4. Unfair comparisons to dissimilar products. Ex. "This book doesn't really go into detail about the personalities behind the games like Steve Kent does in his book."

5. Focus on reader rather than reviewer. Ex. "You'll like this book because blah blah." How do you know? Stick to first-person: "Ex. I really liked this book because blah blah."

Reviews - the pro's and con's

I usually want to read more reviews of the same reviewer to be able to understand the reviews better or to even take the review seriously.
Reading a review by someone you actually know is so much more informative than reading a review written by a complete stranger. Matt's suggestions on how to write a 'proper' review are vital in creating a review that is readable and informative for the readers who don't actually know the author of the review.

A review can be very informative but it could also be very offputting when it is written badly.

Signed Vintage Games Books

For those who were asking about getting their books signed and then we basically figured out we'd be doing bookmarks, it looks like the bookmarks should be done very soon and we'll get them at GDC. We'll keep you guys updated, but here's what the marketing rep said, "The front features the book cover and some info on the book, and the back has an open area for your signatures." At the very least a very nifty add-on to the book itself...
