Vintage Games Personal Copies are in!

Matt Barton's picture

I just got my big box of Vintage Games books in today! I'm guessing this means that Amazon will be shipping orders very soon, perhaps as early as this week.

I can't wait to read your reviews of our project on Amazon!

Just got an email from Amazon today! My copy of Vintage Games book has been dispatched and is on its way.
I live in the UK, so not much longer to wait then compared to the US.

Elsevier is actually a UK publisher, so I would suspect you may get it before those in the US...

Hmm, I just assumed UK because their corporate HQ appears to be in Oxford.

I thought they were Irish!

I thought they were Irish! LOL, well, looks like it's Amsterdam.

The books are published in China, though, so there.

Mine arrived today, too.

Proof that it doesn't matter anymore where you live in Europe?

If you guys can post reviews

If you guys can post reviews to your respective Amazon country sites, that would be appreciated, and any images of the book as well. I only have a blog and control over the US site, not any of the other territories. I can't do anything on the US site until it's officially released here in terms of reader images.

Also, if you're afraid of losing your Amazon review like Rowdy Rob is, there's a simple answer -- you can cross-post your review on our site as well in the comments of the book's official page. Hopefully they're good ones, but of course we value honesty over the alternative... Thanks, guys.

If I cross-post my review here, I might feel like a "shill" for your book on Amazon, and some people might find the cross-posted reviews and conclude the same thing. I'm not sure that's wise, nor would our reviews seem credible to "outsiders," and your own honor as writers might be suspect as a result.

As much as I admire and greatly respect you guys, when I am posting reviews on Amazon, my primary focus is very self-centered, in that I want the readers of my reviews to take into account, if not trust, MY opinion. That means I will throw you guys under the bus if "Vintage Games" sucks (which it won't, based on the bonus chapters I've read). Needless to say, I wouldn't cross-post such a review here, and I will probably feel uncomfortable posting here if I am severely let down by your book. (As of now, such a scenario seems highly unlikely).

In my (deleted?) review of "Dungeons & Desktops," my main thrust was to counterpoint the guy who called Matt "the Leonard Maltin of game reviews" or something like that. I said something to the effect of "Mr. Barton instead chose to trace the history of CRPG's through the games themselves..." Something Matt posted recently here on AA about his book seemed to paraphrase what I said, which had me thinking "Ahhh, he must have read my review!"

My primary focus of my review was "here's what your getting in D&D," because there seemed to be some expectations, if not confusion, on what the focus of D&D was about, based on some of the negative reviews. Some people seemed to be looking for more company and developer background, and were disappointed as a result. My aim was to say "this is what the book focuses on," which lets the potential customer know what he is getting into, minimizing disappointment upon reading the product, or avoiding the book altogether if it's not up their alley.

I suspect I will do the same with "Vintage Games" when I review it, although I'll make sure I save a backup of my reviews from now on.

P.S. I wouldn't really "throw you under the bus," I probably just wouldn't post a review...

A challenge?

Well, first off, Rob, friend or no, I would prefer an honest appraisal. If something is bad in it or doesn't work or even sucks, I'd rather hear about it than not. No hard feelings and all that. One thing we've stressed since day one around here has been honesty. If we don't hear the truth from people we respect - people such as yourselves - than we won't be able to improve. Also, that can affect things like second editions and what-not. I'd rather hear it and deal with it than shy away from it. With that said, I actually have considerable confidence in this book, so I am challenging people such as yourself whose opinion matters to me to find any notable flaw in it and be vocal about it. On the flipside, if it's good, I want to hear that as well. Feedback of any type - though preferably informed one way or the other - is valued immensely. Goodness knows it's not like we're making any money at this, so active feedback is about all we're able to thrive on.
