Amazon.com has a "Three Free Game Downloads Offer" between February 3 through 10. The three games in question: "Jewel Quest II," "Build-A-Lot," and "The Scruffs." You must have an Amazon account to take advantage of this offer.

Here's the link to the Amazon.com "Three Free Game Downloads Offer" page for more info.

Installer

The "Amazon Games and Software Downloader" installs in your Windows startup, and it "calls home" after every bootup. That's a no-no in my book on several levels. I haven't noticed a hit on my processing speed, though, and my firewall blocks the "call home" feature.

"Jewel Quest II" is a decent puzzle game, but not one I would have been happy to pay full price for. It's slick, professional, and... it's a rather standard "Bejewelled" style game with a few enhancements. Don't get me wrong, it's good fun, and I played it a fair bit, but I doubt I'll be playing it next week. Well done, but it's not really my cup of tea.

I suppose I'll go ahead and download the other free Amazon games before I uninstall their "Downloader." I don't initially see any of their other "pay" downloads that appeals to me.

Certainly. With that said, I have a certain respect for the way Amazon conducts business and would be more comfortable installing this from them than from some other companies. It's not good to put your all your eggs in one basket, a la the power of Wal-Mart, but I must say Amazon is my go-to place first for most things these days (and I certainly respect their always DRM-less MP3's and the Kindle, etc.).

I just downloaded Jewel Quest II

There's a bit more to the "Free Download" process than I thought. It's still free, but after clicking on the free "download now," you're taken to the payment screen, where you go through the payment rigamarole. Don't worry, you're credit card is charged "$0.00" dollars.

Next, you MUST download the "Amazon Games and Software Downloader" and install it. After installing the Downloader, it will proceed to downloading the software you choose. From there, you can install your software choice as per usual Windows installation procedures.

Well, for free, it seems worth the minor trouble, but you aren't told what the "free" process is beforehand, so I thought I'd fill you in. Now, let me try out this "Jewel Quest II."
