Matt and I received two of the three available advance copies of our book, Vintage Games: An Insider Look at the History of Grand Theft Auto, Super Mario, and the Most Influential Games of All Time, which is due out the end of March. For those who are not familiar with advance copies, these are exactly the same as the book anyone who purchases it will receive, it's just that we got one of the first copies off the production line. The verdict? FANTASTIC! Matt concurs. The book is simply beautiful, with a wonderful matte finish to the cover and colors that pop throughout its glossy pages. I took a few casual photos, which you'll see after the jump. Be sure to check out the book's main page for more information and order early, because who knows how long the $23.07 pre-order price will last, as it retails for $34.95. As a fellow videogame enthusiast - even though I co-wrote the thing - I can assure you it's well worth it.

Expectations
Absolutely! Even if the platform is different the principles are often the same - and could give the reader some insights.
Which is true, also. Don't you hate it, too, when the movie trailers show all the best scenes - months before the movie hits the theatres? ;-)
Especially, if there is some humorous content - you can only laugh so many times at the same joke...

c) I'm in the planning & design stage right now - which will continue for at least the next 12 months - and though I could debate endlessly about details (you believe that part! ;-) I don't think that neither me nor the public would really gain from that. In fact I think that it would be to the detriment of my project: Other people are less polite than me and have no scruples to steal good ideas!
Some fellow may incorporate them and I will not only be late but the audience gone also. I believe that there's a reason most of the "RPG bloggers" don't blog about the content but only about the game engine & stuff...
Well I think the reason we blog about technicalities and not story is a) were technical minded to start with and the implementation process is very interesting and b) if we were to tell you about story and plot events and other things, there would be no interest to play it or explore this area and that if you know all the secrets!

Bookmarks!
Great news. It looks like the publisher will be producing bookmarks that both Matt and I can sign. So feel free to buy the book at the best price you can get it at (likely now) and you'll still be able to get personalization through the bookmarks.

Looks great cant wait for it to come out will defiantly order this one too :)
Discipline & project management
No you aren't but some people either evolved beyond that stage or have less money to buy as much stuff! ;-)
You'll definitely get updates - simply to sustain my personal motivation!
In the case that I stall at some point - which would be a pity given the material I already have - I need moral support and where better to get that than here? ;-)
Some time ago I thought about blogging the whole process but decided against a live blog because of three reasons:
a) I personally loathe hyping *and* not delivering so I don't want to excite people for a long time and then disappoint them. On the other hand I don't think that many people will really play the thing in the end and the real entertainment for most would lie in watching somebody struggling to create something original! ;-)
b) There are already several good blogs about RPG creation in existance. Even for retro platforms like the one our friend adamantyr does. They are fun to read and they all seem to be in the implementation stage already.
c) I'm in the planning & design stage right now - which will continue for at least the next 12 months - and though I could debate endlessly about details (you believe that part! ;-) I don't think that neither me nor the public would really gain from that.
So for the next year or so I'll keep mum about content details (setting, world, plot etc.) and discuss more or less abstract RPG/games theory and technicalities here and in other blogs/fora.
However, when I thought about the above reasons I came up with the idea to create a "diary blog" that will be made public and accessible in the future so people could read about the creation process that already took place. Like a movie making-of - just to show how and when some ideas materialized and what effect they had in the process. What to scrap and what to keep etc. etc.
While in the implementation phase - probably of interest to a different crowd anyway - I would be open to comments as the "creative part" (the design stage I have to fight through myself) will then be defeated for the most part.
I already have reserved a nice name on the blogspot platform and will post interesting stuff on the project there, I think, as I like this idea better and better!
BTW, for the whole project I schedule three years minimum (it will probably take longer) so you can see that I'm either working very slowly or a I'm a megalomaniac. Or perhaps both...

Shucks, gee whiz, heavens to Murgatroyd, just buy the durn thing! Fudge, you won't be disappointed. :P
Stopping time
Blimey! You already told me that I'm in this blasted thing and rest assured that I'm not an ungrateful, bloody bugger!
It's just that this rotten, would-be retro programmer is trying to satisfy the desire to tell you scallywags an engrossing story by creating a single, effingly epic role-playing adventure by himself and you know how hard it is to be cursedly creative and how limited time is, don't you, matey? ;-)

I know I did, I just don't know why that's not reason enough! I guess I'm different from a lot of people as I tend to buy things I really want even though there's minimal chance I'll get to use it in my lifetime. ;-)
You should post some updates on your project, by the way!

The only problem I see in these photos is the fact that those aren't my hands holding the book! Come on, month of March, get here quicker!!!

ha ha, that's why I changed mine to "freakin'" in my tongue-in-cheek response. I feel funny cursing around here lately for some reason.
