Matt and I received two of the three available advance copies of our book, Vintage Games: An Insider Look at the History of Grand Theft Auto, Super Mario, and the Most Influential Games of All Time, which is due out the end of March. For those who are not familiar with advance copies, these are exactly the same as the book anyone who purchases it will receive, it's just that we got one of the first copies off the production line. The verdict? FANTASTIC! Matt concurs. The book is simply beautiful, with a wonderful matte finish to the cover and colors that pop throughout its glossy pages. I took a few casual photos, which you'll see after the jump. Be sure to check out the book's main page for more information and order early, because who knows how long the $23.07 pre-order price will last, as it retails for $34.95. As a fellow videogame enthusiast - even though I co-wrote the thing - I can assure you it's well worth it.
I think the big margins are nice, too, since it gives plenty of space for the captions -- or your own notes if you're the type who likes to write in books (I am for the most part).
Look at the *color*! It really looks awesome, guys! It's something to help the content just jump right out at you. I am viewing the Sonic page and feel the need to press "right" on a controller to turn him around and get him going. I thought the pictures would add a lot when you guys originally mentioned them and showed a proof (Alone in the Dark), but seeing the advance copy is quite an eye-opener.
Thanks for the acknowledgment! It sure was a lot of fun discussing all of those games. It was a large shoveling of nostalgia in a short, concentrated amount of time. I'd be up for doing it all over again, myself. The armchairarcade community seemed to really take to the name - it really was like waxing nostalgia while sitting in an armchair sipping coffee than it was the oftentimes "yelling from my soapbox" style of discussion on many a message board. Very relaxing and fun.
Did you guys find a solution for autographed copies? My "left-click finger" is getting itchy on the amazon website, but I wanted to check on the plan first.

I'll put in another query to the publisher about that. Last Matt and I heard they were considering bookmarks. I have to see if that's still on the table or what the other options are.

I had no intention of buying this book, it just was not something that excited me, I played the arcades in the 80s and remember a lot of the originals that inspired what came after..
but after seeing the photos (and esp the pics of IK, etc) I pre-ordered. It looks a lot better than I expected, a whole lot better!
so much book for 23$ is not to be passed on:)

I'll only say one thing:
I'll order one from Amazon-UK only to support you guys
(and hope I have the time to read it someday ;-) !
take care,

ha ha, that's why I changed mine to "freakin'" in my tongue-in-cheek response. I feel funny cursing around here lately for some reason.
And hey, "only to support" us? You're in the doggone book too!

Blimey! You already told me that I'm in this blasted thing and rest assured that I'm not an ungrateful, bloody bugger!
It's just that this rotten, would-be retro programmer is trying to satisfy the desire to tell you scallywags an engrossing story by creating a single, effingly epic role-playing adventure by himself and you know how hard it is to be cursedly creative and how limited time is, don't you, matey? ;-)

I know I did, I just don't know why that's not reason enough! I guess I'm different from a lot of people as I tend to buy things I really want even though there's minimal chance I'll get to use it in my lifetime. ;-)
You should post some updates on your project, by the way!
